During the first use, the center was burned and now there is a bare spot. I am assuming it can't be used any longer, but does anyone know if it can be?

That's never happened to mine but I wouldn't use it going forward.

Maybe give CS a call so they can give you guidance about sending it back on their dime as it is defective.

I agree, you should call CS. I had one where the non-stick was wearing off, I called and they sent me a new one.
