Fun inexpensive apple peeling gadget

Yesterday I tried out the "DASH GO" battery-operated apple peeler that Bed Bath & Beyond has for $19.99 (after coupon applied, it's only $15). What a hoot.

Just spike the apple on the machine, press the on-button and watch it create one continuous spaghetti-thin string of peel. Some peel is still left at the top and bottom of the apple, but is easy to remove with a manual peeler.

Batteries are included. Extra blades are stored in the base. Well worth the money unless it breaks down very quickly.

I hope this thing holds up through Thanksgiving, because I volunteered to make apple crisp for 12 people and was dreading peeling all those apples by hand.

I read something by Rachael Ray about her apple crisp recipe, and she said she is always willing to try shortcuts but learned "not to go there" with unpeeled apples. I was sorry to read that, never having done anything with apples in baking myself. Glad it works for you!

I have one (BBB does too) that peels, cores and slices at the same time. You just have to turn the crank, but it's quite easy.

I know the item you're referring to, and looked at reviews before going to the sstore and selecting anythiing. I also examined your item in the store.....based on reviews, I wonder whether you have to hold the gadget in place (because the suction doesn't always stick well to the countertop) with one hand and crank with another? I'd try yours if you say you really find it easy to use. Would really appreciate your opinion, because the coring feature might be useful.

I've had mine for several years now. I must say the suction is not perfect - sometimes it works and sometimes not. However, once you get the apple on, it's easy to hold the peeler down with your left hand and crank with your right. For the coring to be perfect, try to get apples where the calyx (bottom of the apple) is directly under the stem. (Yes, I had to do a google search to find that word "calyx." Never heard it in my life!!!) Is my explanation understandable?

@milkbone I have a spiralizer and don't use it as much as I should but they are a nice little gadget.

I at first had the handheld one but was unhappy with the waste as you could not spiralize the entire veggie (newer models have corrected that) but I am happy with the hand crank model.

They come in several different price points but I was lucky enough to catch a sale on Amazon. Personally i think they are all made by the same manufacturer as they all look identical to me but I would think for the holiday season you should be able to find a nice price!

I seen the kitchenaid commercial and they look pretty cool. I just don't use mine enough to justify an electric one.

We have the one w/o batteries, and it works perfectly. For the last two or three years, we've had out two grandchildren come over on Thanksgiving morning to make apple and pumpkin pies. They absolutely love the gadget. My grandaughter would eat all the spiralized peels if we let her.

This year we're going to let them take over more of the pie-baking. We make the balls of crust and freeze them in advance, but the kids can do the rolling and assembling.

The reviews for the DASH peeler indicate it works well for making "zucchini pasta" and for peeling more than apples. My apple peelings certainly looked like pasta!

As the instructions point out, it's only going to work well on a symmetrical piece of fruit or vegetable. Anything with too many curves and bumps will not peel as well.
