just wondering as I was food shopping today and the price of produce is outrageous in there ($4.99/lb for honey crisp apples, $2.89 head of iceberg lettuce, $2.99/lb for green peppers & more!) and meats $5.99/$6.99/for ground 80/20 beef as example!

I was chatting with a employee friend and he said many buy meats & produce at SaveALot and do the staples at their store.

We have one near us but I've never gone in and today's flyer had some good produce buys.

Just would like some feedback of the quality of their produce/meats if you've shopped there.

Probably have to weigh the good with the bad. $4.99 for honeycrisps is pretty good around here. I've seen them $6.99/lb and they're so big 2 apples would be a lb. Bananas are $.39/lb there and $.49 everywhere else.

I like the meats at SAL, they have actual butchers in addition to some packaged meats. I buy Sabra Hummus there for less than regular grocery stores as well.

I always check the sales flyers for the deals. I have a friend who does all their shopping at Aldi's -- everything from meat to veggies. Personally, I'm not a fan of Aldi's. I'd rather go to Sav A Lot. The closest Trader Joe's is too far to travel too.

I'm sure the stores vary by area, but I was not impressed with my local Save A-Lot.

Do you have an Aldi's near you? I buy a lot of fresh produce (and occasionally meats) there and have never been disappointed.

Good luck!

ETA: Looks like Helen852 and I posted at the same time - I say try it out and see what you think!

I have one of these stores about a block from my house. Am very disappointed in them as they carry very little brands I am familiar with. Weird stuff quite frankly. Will say, however, when they put their boneless/skinless chicken breasts on sale - I go and buy a bunch for me and my brother who lives up in the mountains. They are HUGE and delicious. Most boneless, skinless chicken breasts are absolutely tasteless. Theirs are good. I rarely buy anything else there unless I need a gallon of milk.

Do not know where you all are located but most of the strange brands in the store near me obviously cater to the Spanish speaking people. I did try some of their pasta and a couple other things - absolutely horrible!!

They don't seem to be as inexpensive as they used to be, though.

They do have nice produce, and we have bought produce from there, and their dairy products are good, too.

I like Save-A-Lot for produce and frozen vegetables. Most of their dry goods are generics and not necessarily good in my opinion. I do love their generic oyster crackers though. Produce is produce and as long as you're careful picking the produce, you should be fine. I highly recommend the Biggins potatoes.

In the frozen food section all of the veggies I've tried have been good. Their Frisbie fries are very, very good French fries as long as you don't mind small (in length) French fries. Restaurants only want premium fries of good length, so fry manufacturers have to do something with the short pieces. They'll either sell them for cattle food or sell them to a company like Frisbie who bags them and sells them through chains like Save-A-Lot. The best frying potatoes go to restaurant suppliers while the lesser stuff goes to retail suppliers like McCain or Ore-Ida. When you buy fries from McCain or Ore-Ida, you get whatever comes out of the plant, long, short and everything in between. Restaurants don't want the short pieces, so they pay a premium to get all long fries from the best potatoes. Companies like Frisbie snatch up the leftovers and sell them. You get a premium quality product (only short, all less then two inches in length) at a discount price.

Our Save-A-Lot here is NO Aldi's. Aldi's off brands are far superior. Sav-A-Lot produce is hit or miss.....to be fair the same could be said for our local Aldi's.....but as far as the other products Save-A-Lot brands here are really "off" brands.

ventured into Save A lot today honestly, the produce looked very fresh and I purchased a few peppers (2/$1) and red/green grapes (1.69/lb).

I took a look at the meat case I got a couple of ham steaks. All looked fresh

Funny thing got up to checkout and cashier asked me if I had my "own" bags if not I could buy them. I think I'll go back for the 4 day sale this weekend.

didnt get to Aldis too nice decided to lounge at the pool! Thanks again everyone for your replies.

The Save-a-Lot store here in my area of southern WV, is mainly popular with shoppers watching their expenses, who stretch their budgets with off brand products. I personally don't like the looks of their meat, but because the store is located in an area with easy access, and is never super busy, I will run in for bread, milk, or sale items. When I helped with food drives at the hospital, most of the canned food donated came from this store.

I mainly shop Kroger's & Aldis. But I have shopped at Sav A Lot and there are certain items I pick up. They have a brand of american cheese that to me is almost as good as deli american. It is Coburn brand. You have to make sure to get the unwrapped slices The individually wrapped of the same brand is not as good. I usually buy some 'steak ums' (not health food but DH loves them) & they are lower in cost than anywhere I have found. The ones I shop have good meat and produce. They supply the grocery bags but you have to bag them yourself.

Our city was very glad to have a few move into the urban food desert areas that had major chains abandon the neighborhoods and only had quickie markets for residents without transportation had to make very limited nutritional choices at.

I've never found Save-A-Lot an enjoyable place to shop. Their prices are cheaper because their packaging comes smaller. That's the huge thing I found at my local store.
