Help With Keeping Curl in Hair After Using Iron

Specifically, I'm having trouble keeping curl from falling out of my hair after using my iron. I use a T3 iron.

My hair is about 20% white/gray and is almost all one length; about four inches below my collar bone. (For additional reference, I'm caucasion.)

Naturally fairly tight wavy but absolutely without any spiral curl. (I wish!)

Should I get more layers?

And maybe there's a product to use before I blow dry that will help the curl to stay once I use the iron?

I'm so tired of spending a half hour with my iron only to have it fall three hours into my day.

I think you need to accept the fact your hair isn't meant for curls. Not everyone looks good with curls anyway. There are many styles that look great that aren't curly. Google some picts or go to a wig shop to get an idea of what would work better for you.

@timeless Have you tried hot rollers? That’s what I use. I also use some moose before drying my hair and leave my curlers in while I get dressed etc. I like my curling iron but it just takes too long became hair is thick. Of course a little hair spray at the end always helps keep your curl.

i use redken hot sets, just before i curl. helps not sure if anything can make curls stay all day. let hair cool before you comb and maybe use a heavy duty hair spray. This is what i do, but when it starts getting humid, forget it.

Maybe you're right; in this stage of my life.

I've had years of good luck with a curling iron keeping curl in my hair, but now that I'm nearly 60, it could be that those days are over.

Still looking to see if there's something I'm missing, though!

I have a set I haven't used in years. Perhaps I should go back to them and use a mousse like I did in the 1980's! I'll try that.

Thanks for reminding me of them. I don't know if they work anymore...lol.

This is exactly what I think I've been missing out on.

I'll give it a try. I do need to keep my hair in good conditon with a heat protectant and this looks like it would do that and more.

Hair spray really helps alot with hold after you style.

Gray hair is very dry . It really does behave differently.

You might try deep conditioning once a week.

Have been using this product for several months recommended by a hairstylist and helped my hair tremedously. SIMPLY SMOOTH Keratin Reparative Magic Potion Original.

It is a heat protectand but does so much more to help the hair.

It is a hassle to fight Mother Nature. Might also depend on how much time you want to invest? Would a different cut or a perm help?

@timeless Have you tried going with you natural waves, skipping the iron which is so drying to the hair (especially grey ones)? Also deep conditioning does keep hair in good condition that can help the curl. Try using a product for heat protection that has hold.

My hair is garbage!!!! Stick straight, thin and fine, and has a freaking mind of its own. Lost it all to chemo so had great hopes that it would grow back with something in the curly, wavy world---NOPE!!! Now I have 2 major cowlicks added. It does not curl--it bends ---I use soooo many products to give it something to coat each hair so I can curl it--is short, right around my ears/nape of neck, in some minor layers. I have decided to let it do --whatever it does and even thought about shaving it off and wearing wigs---had 3 wigs that I LOVED and that looked fantastic during the cancer zombie days but I donated them --wish I kept 1----have many heated appliances that I use---nothing gives me good results tho. Not an earth shattering disaster---but still so annoying!!!

Herbal Essences has a liquid spray gel that works well. Spray while hair wet and then scrunch and blow dry. And has been mentioned hair spray is your friend to maintain your style.

@timeless - I definitely think long layers would help hold the curl. Your hair is all one length and maybe a little "heavy" to maintain the curl/wave.

My hair is right past my shoulders and without long layers, my hair would go flat. It would be too heavy. The layers help it look full.

I started life with thin, fine hair that grew long, thick and heavy. By the time I graduated high school, my hair was so thick if I washed it before bed and slept with my bonnet hairdryer on, it would still be damp when I got ready for school! My hair was causing severe headaches, which resulted in a major haircut in 1974, that forever sold me on short hair.

Menopause left me with fine, limp hair again that I stopped curling after I retired. Last month I was so fed up with it, I had it cut pixie short to get away from all styling products and tools. I am quite happy with wash and go; am not even blow drying now that temperatures are warmer.

@rockygems123 --will add that to the list--as for the hair scrunching---not a thing my hair does----is scrunch resistant---also I go by this mantra--the higher the hair the closer to God--have a shelf full of spray hair cement as well!!!

I think a good hairspray might work as well. I also use a anti humidity spray in the summer when it is really humid, otherwise my hair just frizzes right up.

My natural wave pattern is uneven. The underside is fairly tight waves, but the overlaying top layer of my hair is just barely wavy. I've thought about having my hairdresser use a perm just on the top layer to match the underneath wave, but am afraid of making a mistake!
