makeup purging...

So i have lots of BE pots of shadows and 3 Carmindy shadow compacts which are over 6 or 7 years old. I have been using Belle shadow sticks and Skinn smudge sticks and RMS luninizer on my lids. Easy and no brushes needed!!! I am in the midst of cleaning out clothes, beauty items, household items, etc...why is it so hard to let go of old makeup???

@bargainsgirl I'm always decluttering, seasonal purging, etc...it's "hard for me to let go of" most things!

I too have saved old BE pot shadows and powders from 20 yrs ago!! I will occasionally wear an eyeshadow as my BE pots are colors I don't otherwise have in any other brand. I use the subtle blush (I forget what it's called, but barely there pink) often when I'm having a stay home "natural" type makeup day...concealer, B&B powder and this illuminating BE pink powder. And occasionally I swipe on Mineral Veil...still like that.

I have gotten rid of some over the years, but still have about 8 small pots of various liner colors, blushes, eyeshadow...and don't ya know, there was one I particularly liked ..."cupcake" a shimmery pink....THAT's the one pot I lost somehow. Lol...I always thought it would turn up somewhere but it hasn't. Weird too, because I don't travel with these, they were always just in my makeup box at home.

ps. I read Lesley Blodgett's autobiography a few years ago, (was a fun read)...she ALSO owns many many BE pots of shadows from 20 years ago!! So...she was no help to me! Lol.

@bargainsgirl - I understand! It is hard. What I do is put the makeup that I want to purge in a box and set it aside for a certain amount of time. Sometimes its 30 days, most of the time it ends up being a bit longer but never more than 90 days. Then if I don't miss it and take it out of the box during that time limit, out it goes. So far that has worked really well for me. I have taken items back but I've also let a lot go and not regretted it.

I have many things to dump too. Mostly foundation compacts from Geller, BE, Doll 10, tarte and on and on..... most of them are way to yellow on my skin even tho they are "supposed" to be my shade----probably at least $100 in just those things---I don't use them much if at all anymore---the one thing I did do, was to combine into one jar, most of the many powder powder blushes altogether---and came up with a really nice shade for me. I just tossed any color eyeshadows out--only use the neutrals now. I also did the same with alot of the the bisque shades I have and still use and again, came up with a good shade on me. Have lots of pots of mineral veil too which I use still and also have a few transparent fixing powders that I will combine. Have way too many eyeliners and tossed out about 5 different mascaras. And-- oh good grief--found a zip bag FULL of old samples of everything---from beauty boxes and such--must have been well over 500 of those little things----at least 10 years old!!! Holy Cow!!!!

I trashed about 6 things just 15 minutes ago in my side of the bathroom. It is a process, not a one-shot thing for most of us. And it pays off! Big time. But it is a process! Stay the course!

@bargainsgirl I had to throw away about 10 pounds of old makeup this month after going through my makeup stash. It was hard to face it all! I set a kitchen time for 30 minutes and just started throwing things in the bag- blush, lipstick, mascara, eyeliner etc. A lot of it was used and some of it was new, but about 8 years old. Once that kitchen timer went off, I was done. I knew that I'd go nuts for hours looking at all of the makeup one by one, but if I made a beat-the-clock type of game, I could throw it away without feeling sentimental about each item. I wish you luck in your makeup purge, Bargainsgirl! You can do it! 🤗🙌✨

@SportyShorty07 If feels good when you get space and no clutter and more room to breath and time to enjoy rather than rooting through piles of stuff and feeling bad about it.

How long did you miss the stuff? Not long?

@Sooner It feels great to declutter my old makeup collection! I missed the makeup that I threw away for a few days and then I forgot about it 😉. It was fun to look at some of the old packaging from different brands. I'm decluttering my closet and dresser now- that's a lot harder and will take a week if I take an hour or so each day to donate and organize each section. I'm taking myself out to lunch when I finish donating a ton of clothes this month!😁

Sounds like you're doing a major house purge. I did one a few years ago. We have collected so much stuff over the years. We still have too much. Purging is always a work in progress for me.

I don't own a lot of makeup so I'm not sure I'm the one to offer advice on getting rid of some of it. I use the same products and colors over and over. Maybe you could keep 2 or 3 of your favorites in each category?

I guess I'm not the norm. I love "purging" and organizing and sorting. My daughter took after me and we both will go through each cupboard and drawer about every 3 months. I visit her every couple months and lo and behold, everything is rearranged.

I love getting rid of things I don't use. No problem. It feels so good cleaning out things and being organized, I really enjoy it.

I have trouble getting rid of old makeup, simply because once the original founders sell, the makeup is never the same.

I do get rid of liquids and creams. But powder eyeshadow and blush? No - especially if the color has been discontinued. Lip colors are also hard for me.

Years ago I wore a color by Bite, which is no longer, called "Vin." It was the perfect color for me, then it was discontinued, then Bite folded. Same old story - the founder left in 2018, company that bought it and owns other brands ran it into the ground, and changed it from being cruelty free, and it closed completely in 2022. I still have one unused one in my drawer. I guess I'm keeping it to look at - LOL!

I get it. I used to feel this way about purging clothes and shoes. Still do, a bit. 😉 I think most of us struggle when it's time to let go of something we love.

Same here @beach-mom for same reason!

I saved many old Mally lipglosses that I lovvvvved, but finally made myself toss them last year; they were about 15 years old, and I just had one of the "truth telling myself", brave purging days. Sad they are gone...they were the BEST. (the old twist up product onto the attached nylon brush types and the colors were perfection. As was her original concealer RIP...I have YET to find a color match on any concealer or staying power or blending with my skin, to replace this Holy Grail concealer...try as I have with many brands since then. 😭 As was her old original mascara....THE BEST. RIP 😭

I also held onto old Joan Rivers lip glosses, also beautiful colors...but finally made myself let them go a few years ago...just didn't feel hygenic to use them, and started to taste funny.

I will say...I forget who (what brand, but will post if I find out) now...but on Amazon, I did find another brand who does the twist up onto a brush types lip gloss with beautiful looking colors, but have yet to buy one. Trying to use the ones I have up right now. Oh...I think it was Stila!

I do have one old lipstick of Mally's "Mally pink" I ADORE the natural pink shade, creamy consistency...I have a stub left on my lipstick I use sparingly. RIP...I'll never get another.

I'll never forgive Mally for selling her company!! Lol. Good for her. S*cked for me. 😭

ps. Mad at Philosophy too....fragrance staying power has never been the same, and Pure Grace is my favorite. 😭

Me too...it's why I had the JR and Mally lipglosses so long...and used them, occasionally, (hence I never used them up...just had collected too many over time, and you remember....ALL those gift pack TSVs!), until I tossed them...at the point they either got sticky/thick and/or tasted funny. But I keep things and use them waaaay beyond the "6 mos to a year" many experts advise...so far I'm alive. lol

It's super hard for me as well, I just have a hard time giving it up, I always say I might wear this again...Sometimes I do too, but most often -not...

I had makeup that I knew I wouldn't wear again, and I pass a lot of it to my daughter, especially a lot of my BE..She loves BE....

It always feel good though to go through it all and get rid of it and make more room for new!!! lol...

I've done better by not buying more. I have only purchased mascara this year. I've made it kind of a game. I've also shared with a few friends. My shower gel stash was the worst. Still too much but the first CIJ last year that I didn't purchase any. I was gifted a Dove Peppermint bark at Christmas, and an Amazing Grace set I bought for my sister. But other than that......nothing.

I did buy some Beekman milk deodorant. Other than that I am STILL good.
