Tipping question again

I thought their was a recent entry on tipping but I can't find it.

I realized when I left the salon I didn't tip enough. I had highlights, cut, blow dry and a special antifrizz treatment that requires flat ironing.

The bill was $180 and I thought I gave the hairdresser two twenty dollar bills but when I got him I realized I gave him a twenty and a five.

He did a great job. I always have ''the works" for my birthday. I'll be eighty one tomorrow.

I've been going to him forever; close to thirty years. He used to be across the street from me. Now it's a ten dollar Uber.

I think I'll send him an email thanking him. I'm not sure if I should mention the tip. He's very gracious and the last time I went he told me the tip was too much and he gave me back a bill (can't remember what it was.)

Please advise: would you say anything in the email re tip?

Sounds like you can't walk or drive to the salon and leave the tip in an envelope with the front desk. So, I would definately give it to him somehow.

Everyone today is stressed for $. A thank you is nice, nicer is $ and a thank you.

@lavendar You should decide on what the tip you want/need to give him and settle on that percentage. If you contact him, tell him you made a mistake and will give him the rest at the next appointment. Or mail it to him.

@lavendar Do you email him regularly?

If you don't, I would let it be and just tip extra next time. You can mention the oversight at the start of the hair session. The 13.8% tip is not great but not terrible either, so it can stand on its own. Or you can stop by to drop off the missing $15.

I think it's odd to mention it in an email, or just to email your stylist thanks tbh.

Why didn't you thank him in the shop after he was done?

Since you are a long time customer of over 3 decades, I would not worry about a "tip."

At your next appointment tip a little extra & tell him "to make up from my last appointment" & leave it at that. And don't forget to thank him this time.

I would not say anything about the tip, nor would I send an email.

You have paid for this service and given a tip, nothing more needs to be done.

I would call the salon, get him on the phone, and tell him about my mistake and that I'd make it up to him the next time I'm in.

I thanked him profusely. He was really pleased and took a picture with his phone.

It would cost me twenty some bucks to uber back and forth to the shop.

I think I'll just let it go and make it up to him next time. I think he'd be uncomfortable if I mailed a check.

We do email; I'll send him a note telling him my hair still looks great on my birthday.

I would just let it be with the hair stylist.

I have a tipping question....we just had our lawn guy do weeding & mulch. He's his own boss and can make up the amount that he charges. He and his helper were here for 5 hours weeding & mulching.

He charged $950.00 and he likes cash. I only had $960.00. I told my DH to give him the $960.00 and keep the change.

Would you give extra for a tip? This is confusing to me. He's the owner and his own boss.

This kind of tipping is so confusing. Hair salons, tipping has been pretty standard for a long time. Today everyone expects a tip. I go with my gut feelings. Not everyone gets a tip.

I want to thank you for being considerate of your stylist. Mistakes happen. Since it would be a special trip with added cost for the Uber, I'd send your stylist a message or email. Explain the error and that you'll square up next time. I'm sure they'll understand and appreciate it.

Did you read her OP, @Iwantcoffee? She clearly stated that she gave him less than she intended by mistakenly giving him the incorrect currency.

@haddon9 Getting paid in cash = "under the table" payment = no taxes. That amount of "under the table" payment he is charging you is the tip as he is NOT paying taxes on it.

I would have asked if he had $10 as I do not have the exact amount. If not, I would have said, "you know where to find me" as he goes off to get my change. I hope you got a receipt!

@lavendar , I've done the same. I didn't say or do anything and the next visit just tipped her more to cover the last time.
