I'm getting ready to purchase a protein powder. I'm using the powder to increase protein in my diet and for energy. I'm looking at Nature's Bounty, CVS protein powder and Spiru-tein energy meal. They all seem to balance out evenly w/ vitamins & protein amount, the big difference seems to be price and type of protein. I can get the Nature's Bounty & CVS for under $20 for a 2 lb can and they both contain whey protein. The Spiru-tein will cost $31 for the same size container and it contains soy, rice & pea protein.

Is there any difference in the protein types used in these powders? Is one type of protein better than another?

Here is my short list of the issues some people have with either one.

Something like 90% ( I don't remember the exact number) of soy grown in the US is GMO. If that matters to you. Obviously someone who is vegan wouldn't choose the whey protein source. Some people believe that unfermented soy products aren't healthy or should be limited.

Jax's mom, thanks so much for your reply. I actually checked the label for the Spiru-tein and it's a non GMO blend of 3 proteins (soy, rice & pea). I wasn't even aware of this issue.

Oh that's great it's a non GMO source. Sorry my post wasn't more detailed, I haven't been keeping abreast of the subject for quite awhile so I was just going off my previous reading.

It it's helpful, remember that "whey protein" is animal-derived/dairy (cow milk). I applaud you looking into the different kinds.

Look into the effects of IGF-1 on the human body (IGF-1 is found in animal products), and it'll help you make an even more informed decision.

DH's cardiologist told him to only use whey protein...we buy it ready-mixed in small single-serving cartons at Costco; it is delicious and we use as a meal replacement

A family member has had lap band surgery and the Dr recommendation was a protein powder called "UNJURY". Best tasting and really a great product. Some gyms have it, otherwise you have to order it online.

Beckyo

I have used ProLab Whey Protein for 15 years. It was recommend to me by my trainer and all the bodybuilders in the gym use it too. I still use it to this day and love the taste. Its pure and easily digestible. They have been in business for a very long time. Even though they have pea, rice and others available now, Whey is still supposed to be the best.

7 or 8 grams according to the packets, but I get 13 grams of protein. Mote than what I was getting with Secure by Lessman. Those taste good too. OP, if you are thinking about protein bars, Premier Protein bars have 30 grams of protein and taste good and fill me up. SAMs and grocery chains carry them. pure Protein S'mores is also good.

Some of my family members are active in a very intelligently run Paleo program. They recommend no sugar added whey protein. There are some issues with soy that some women should avoid, I think. Sweetening with Stevia or Erythritol is OK with the Paleo-in-the-know folks. HTH

Dr Oz recently had a program on protein powders and although he did not recommend any specific brand, he did give some good info on the different types. The entire series is still available on his website, doctoroz.com

Pea - curbs cravings

Brown Rice - Boosts energy

Whey - good source of sustainable energy, suppresses appetite, controls blood sugar, accelerates metabolism, fast acting

Casein - lose weight, controls mood swings

He recommends to look for 20 g protein per TB, unflavored, organic, few ingredients

I, personally, have been using Tara's Organic Whey Protein - 21 g protein, USDA organic, gluten-free, (does have some soy). Get it from Amazon, although I have seen it at Whole Foods (more expensive)

I tried it after my gastric bypass.I did sort of like the chicken soup flavor. They have a great sampler pack and a money back guarantee that is good.
