Setting Sprays

Does anyone use a setting spray and do we really need it? I have never used one so not sure if I need it.

Ulta has a Tarte and Charlotte Tilbury Setting Spray coming up in the 21 Days of Beauty.

@MrsCat21 I've never used setting spray on myself. I never have makeup on that long that I need something to keep on for many hours. I have however used it on brides. Be sure if you purchase it be sure it doesn't have alcohol...many of them do.

It is a non-negotiable? Who knows, but I use one. Currently I'm using one from NYX. I like Milani Make It Last better so I'll eventually get back to it. I also use setting spray to dampen my eyeliner brush. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it helps the eyeliner to stay put better.

@MrsCat21 - Most of the time when wearing makeup, I use a setting spray. Sometimes I notice my face makeup seems to fade quickly so setting sprays help keep that from happening. I have used the Charlotte Tilbury one that will be offered during ULTA's sale. It's good and for a high end choice, I think it's one of the better ones. The Charlotte Tilbury spray on sale is the travel size and it's a decent amount so if you want to try a setting spray wthout paying full price, the travel size would give you enough to try it out for quite a while. Have not tried the TARTE setting spray.

Drugstore version I have had good luck with the Milani Make It Last original version. Don't know if it's alcohol free as I don't have a bottle of it right now.

I buy the minis usually. I was using the CT. Really like it. Alcohol is the last ingredient so not worried. It was almost gone so bought the Tarte life lock. I think I like this more than the CT. No alcohol. I hope QVC brings the two pack back.

I had the Milani and liked it. The issues is my. Bad hands. I need a smaller bottle. It’s why I use mini. The Miani one is hard to get top off so I can transfer into a smaller bottle

I think a nice setting spray can make your makeup look seamless. Melts it all together to give to a flawless look. I double layer. I put my foundation and concealer on. Then spray. Then my blush and bronzer. Spray again. Then go in with my doll 10 loose powder. Sometimes I give it a third spray. Or will put the loose powder on after blush and bronzer and just do a second spray then.

My all time favorite setting spray is NYX Bare With Me Prime, Set, Refresh Multitasking Spray. This setting spray is only $9.99 and it has such a fine and nice mist. My makeup lasts through weightlifting and aerobics thanks to this setting spray. Love it- I've used it as a primer and I've used it as a setting spray. It works on my oily/combo skin.

I've always disliked setting sprays because it seemed counter-intuitive to put something wet on my face after putting my makeup on. However, I found Elf Power Grip Dewey Setting Spray. It has a "shockingly fine" mist. You might find it cheaper at full price than the others on sale. I don't remember what I paid for it, but Elf is usually very reasonable.

Yes, I've been using a setting spray in the last several years.

I use Fix+ by Mac and it works to hold my makeup in place all day.
I feel it helps the clean beauty items I have been using recently, especially cream blush. It stays all day without reapplication. Cream blush never lasted on me until I began using a setting spray.

I liked UD Up All Night too. When I was finished with that, I tried Mac.
They're both pretty good.

I do use Urban Decay's setting spray and love it. I really see a difference when I forget to use it.

So, alcohol vs non-alcohol setting sprays. There's a place for both.

Recently, I was watching someone on one of the morning shows talking about setting sprays. She said if you want transfer-proof makeup, to look for one with alcohol in it. Also, one with alcohol in it is also referred to as a fixing spray, whereas the nonalcohol one simply blends the makeup. Therefore, all fixing sprays are setting sprays, but not all setting sprays are fixing sprays.

"Alcohol-based setting sprays contain polymers that remain on the skin after the alcohol in the spray evaporates off the face. These polymers form a film that locks makeup in place. Water-based setting sprays, on the other hand, don't have the same shielding capabilities. These types of sprays are used to blend makeup and moisturize the skin, creating a cleaner, brighter finish — but not necessarily a long-lasting one."

"For this reason, celebrity makeup artist Gloria Elias-Foeillet told Byrdie that alcohol-setting sprays are the superior option for extending your makeup's wear. However, that doesn't automatically mean alcohol-based setting sprays are better for your skin.

There's also a difference between Finishing Sprays and Setting Sprays. According to Katlynandcompany,

"There is a difference between what finishing sprays and setting sprays do for your makeup and skin. Finishing sprays help your makeup look more like actual skin because it’s not just resting on top of your face. On the other hand, setting sprays help your makeup to last all day through sweat, rain, and other elements."

"Many of these sprays contain alcohol, and that may or may not be a bad thing. There are good and bad alcohols. If your spray contains a bad alcohol, you shouldn’t use it unless it’s listed as one of the few last ingredients on the back of the bottle. Avoiding bad alcohols in your sprays can help prevent aging and drying your skin out."

Being a curly, I'm familiar with the difference between good alcohols and bad alcohols and had wondered if the same concept applied to setting sprays, and apparently it does.

I almost always use one if I've done makeup that day. I've tried many but tend most often to use Elf, NYX or Milani. I've found the 'higher end' ones are usually no better.

I feel the same way and have never used a setting spray but might give this brand a try.

I've never found setting sprays to make a huge difference or maybe I'm just not noticing it.
I think they're difficult to use because you're not supposed to get them in your eyes and it's hard not to get it in your hair.

I like Mac Fix +. I don’t spray it directly on my face. I spray it on a brush or sponge and pat it on.

I have tried many and always go back to UD All-Nighter and MAC Fix Plus. I particularly like MAC for when I look too powdery. It makes make-up melt into skin for the most beautiful finish. UD is for when my make-up needs to go in for the long haul!

I use the NYX too and find it keeps the eyebrow pencil on all day. I have no brows left and this keeps it in place instead of me accidently wiping it off . Also I have very sensitive eyes and it has caused no problem at all. I do keep my eyes closed when spraying and pat off any if it gets on my lids .
