I've had white hair at my temples for at least ten years.

But recently I noticed a few hairs that are growing in in my old brown color...with white ends!

I don't color my hair and haven't since 2019, so I'm baffled. Is this an anomoly or a trend I can expect?

At 58 and fully menopausal I never thought to expect this.

Anyone remember the scene in the 1980's movie, Poltergeist, where the mom suddenly went white at her temples?

She dyed it back.

Maybe she just needed to wait a bit? lol

Seriously though, has anyone experienced a reverse in their graying/silvering hair?

Yes, the under section in the back of my hair has turned an ashy dark brown. It happens.

I have it highlighted to blend with the test if my hair that is blonde with brown sections for depth.

Several times over the past decades I've had gray come in and then within a few months the hair has reverted back to its natural color. I think that in most cases the appearance of gray has been related to stress. And the natural color returns when the stress dissipates. Seems like my hair follicles have grown more sensitive to stress as I've grown older. I don't color my hair.

@timeless This hairdresser was the one I went to many years ago before I went silver. I went to him last week to blend the lowlights that were faded and many different colors of brown from adding new ones each appt. with the previous hairdresser/stylist ...not sure what they like to be called.

He explained the thing about hair being like fish scales and the "scales" lift up when dye and peroxide are used too many times and so the color doesn't stay, but slides off. He also said the culprits are hot water, too much heat from the dryer, the sun even in winter should have a hat (?!?) and too frequent washing even with a sulfate free shampoo. Olaplex that I had been using too often he said has a lot protein that will dry the hair too much and to limit the use. Deep conditioning is better to keep the dye in place.

Grey/white/silver hair resists dye to begin with...like your bangs. So, now I'm in the process of him adding back what he called tiny/baby lowlights just along my part where it's all silver so it will blend with all lowlights previously put in. Eventually as it grows and the silver part has a few darker pieces are added there and the length is trimmed...I'll be all silver/grey again.

Getting lowlights is the biggest mistake I've made with my hair in a very long time. When I'm all silver again, that's it. No color again.
