I used to perm my stick straight hair too, but I could get it wet in the shower--just not shampoo it for 3 days----and oh that smell!!! So stinky--has that changed ?

I agree. I always wet mine down usually the next day. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to go out after having slept on it. It has never affected it.

The way my hair takes perms, I rather doubt even conditioning it would affect it. In fact, if I thought it would loosen it a little, I might try it. I'd like a looser perm, but my hairdresser uses the largest rods she claims can be used on my length of hair.

The smell didn't seem as bad as the 70's perm smell. She did give me a towel to cover my face while I was processing, so maybe that's why the smell wasn't so bad.

Did you just use the word "poo"? LOL! Anyhoo, my hairdresser specifically said "don't get it wet at all for three days", so I'm going by her instructions.

From what I understand right after you’re done with a perm, the process isn’t over. For the next 72 hours, the chemicals are still doing their work. That has always been "the rule".

My hair was/is straight with zero body so I now perm it 2 or 3 times per year. And that way I do not have to do anything other than wash it and let it dry au natural - if in a hurry I ust my hair dryer with a diffuser attached. But I try to wait a week before washing it tho I do run wet hands thru it to calm it down that first week.

@SurferWife Oh I feel this. My hair is bra line length and super (really super tight) curly in the back but the sides are just barely wavy, I wish I could "use" my curl / waves but it looks ridiculous, even my husband laughs, its like I have diff. hair in the back than I do on the sides. Instead I have to blow it dry straight and add curls, my hair won't stay straight so not worth doing that either.

@SandGirl - Can you get a perm on the sides only and leave the back alone? Have you ever gotten a perm before?

I have very fine hair. I decided to get a perm.

So I was shocked how much it smelled after I got it. I had night school class that night. I had decided to go to Penn State for classes at night. I didn't want to stink up the classroom. So I washed my hair as soon as I came home from getting the perm,

WELL - my hair looked like Elsa Lanchester in Bride of Frankenstein

I put a scarf over my hair but the bangs still stood out about 4 inches from my forehead.

My first and last perm. I learned to deal with my fine hair.
