Beauty Product Promises

I had to stop in to our local Walgreen's yesterday and decided to look at the beauty creams aisle. I was so overwhelmed at all the promises to make you look younger, all saying pretty much the same, even throughout the same brands. Reaffirmed why I have to depend on QVC to tell me what I need, too many choices that all do the same thing. I have a lot of time on my hands but sure do get bored very quickly studying how much of this and how much of that I need, all to have a brand new ingredient arrive on the scene before the jar is done. Too much!

Well to make it easier, just remember that there are a few scientifically backed ingredients-Vit.C, Niacinamide, Squalene etc… the rest is well to stand out from the others.

@Carolina925 Yes, it's confusing and a lot of it is B.S. The beauty industry is a billion dollar business. They're selling "youth in a jar".

There's no lifting, firming or voluminzing products on the market. Surgeons do that. QVC is there to continue the myth of every and any jar will make you look 20 yrs. younger.

According to derms decades ago, you only need a good cleanser, plain moisturizer, SPF and maybe the proven item which is RETIN A.

The sun causes 80-90% of skin aging. So, I know what I gotta do plus eat and apply antioxidants.

@Carolina925 I bought all of the things for years & years.

I would think maybe it was doing something, then I would get bored & see something new to try.

I spent a lot of money.

I settled on argan oil as makeup remover, First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser, Cosrx Oil Free Lotion w Birch Sap for day, Trader Joe's Nourish Antioxident Oil Free Moisturizer for night & Trader Joe's Supreme Hydrating Eye Cream day & night.

My face looks no better or worse than when I used all of the expensive face serums, creams & scrubs.

I just look like me. I'm 63.

There is only so much topicals can do for your skin and aging. To me that means that there are some benefits in using skin care over not using skin care. But, that's it: No Miracles. Having used all price ranges of skin care over time, it seems to me that the more expensive brands get the newer ingredients first over the drug store levels. They are more finely milled etc. Add into that our individuals skin responses vary to ingredients so you just need to find what works best for you.

@monicakm I say the same thing about my dear mother all the time! Juat one more time!! I have a question for you...please...I have a dear friend that has been going through a lot. Her husband of fifty years passed and she has a breast cancer diagnosis. Her birthday is coming up and her skin is dehydrated. She is looking for something to plump it out. She told me that she wants some new skin care for her birthday. Any good recommendations? Thank you in advance!

@Group 5 minus 1 Ancestry is not as big an influence as you may think. My ancestors had terrible bumpy skin, and one of my sisters and I don't. I think we take better care of our skin. And I didn't even start out that way. I used to wear baby oil in my youth to accelerate a tan and always burned, blistered and peel. Eventually stopped. I started taking care of my skin in my 40s. Before that, I just used Nivea in the jar or tube. I have dry skin.

@Carolina925 If you don't want to spend a lot of time and money researching products, dermatologists typically recommend for consumers to stick with a big brand because they spend a lot of money on research, which generally makes their products more effective. A smaller company won't do as much research. I have read that l'oreal products are fairly similar or the same as other pricier products by product lines owned by the same company like lancome. So if I didn't want to spend a lot of time and money, and wanted to shop at the drugstore, I would probably look at the l'oreal offerings, and see what better appeared to meet my needs.

The reason the packaging reads the same is that the packaging is written by writers, not scientists. They use buzzwords that don't have much meaning (your sking will "appear" soft) that would sell you the product but won't get the company sued for making false promises. But there are subtle differences among the products, which is why I would just stick with one line and study the different products.

@Franklinbell I don't know when @monicakm will get to you, so I'll make my own suggestion.

I think it's good to remove dead skin if she hasn't been doing it, so I would get some AHA. I have lways used glycolic acid. If she is new to this, I started with Dr. Denese's pads. I see QVC only has the giant sizes, so maybe you want to look for another aha that is not too strong, if your friend is new. And a product that I like that is a multitasker (helps smooth texture and wrinkles) and moisturizer is StriVectin Advanced Plus Intensive Moisturizer in the tube. But maybe this is too much for you, not sure.

I know Monica likes the Snail Mucin, I think the Cosrx. I have never tried it, but read good thngs about it, and it's on my shelf and it's a plumper. I think the sheet masks would be a good treat (that is what I bought, with other things), they are $20 right now on Amazon, and, like I said, I think sheet masks always feel like a luxury.

All the hype and all the products -- it could really make your head spin! I can't go for all the anti-aging stuff because of my reactive skin. I have to stick with fragrance free. That's my top priority. And the fewer ingredients, the better - usually! Also, I try to stick with name brands that I am familiar with. I have also found that just because a product is expensive does not necessarily mean it is better or will bring better results!

This reminds me of what Elizabeth Grant (shopHQ) said about her products. She said, "My products won't make your skin soft. If you want soft skin use Vaseline."
I loved her honesty. And I always thought that if your skin was soft, it would be more likely to droop. haha Maybe she was right.
