Airwrap curler - Anyone try a more affordable option?

I would really like to try the Airwrap styler to see if it would be easier to curl my long hair and if it would last longer.

I cannot afford the Dyson or Shark and I won't pay that price even on easy pay, even if they are worth the cost, it's just not something I can budget for.

With that being said, has anyone tried a "cheaper" type that you felt worked well and would be worth trying?

Many years ago I used rags (10" long, rolled up part way on barely damp hair). Overnite I got beautiful, long lasting curls.

I recall those days.

I'm not looking for all that extra work. I would just really like to try the airwrap type styling.

I use the Beachwaver B series and enjoy it. Right now the pink version comes in 1" and 1 1/4". On sale on the Beachwaver site for $69.

I have long hair that is easy to curl but neither the Dyson or Shark airwraps were terrible keeping the curls for long but they seem to work for other people. I would work just as well or as bad depending on on your hair.

@SandGirl I have never tried the AirWrap style curler, the reviews noting the fact that the curls did not last warned me off. I tried the Beachwavers, and they were ok, but I also didn't find the curls lasting very well unless I left the hair wrapped for so long it almost fried my ends. I took a big chance on the Calista AirGlide when it was a TSV last year, and I was shocked that it worked really well, and the curls lasted. It looks like a regular flat iron, but the big difference is that, instead of having to hold it closed on the hair and then wrangle twisting it to produce a curl, the plates' default position is closed, so you press a button to open it, put the hair strand in, then let go of the button and turn the tool to start curling. Maria McCool had another TSV more recently, it was an AirGlide 2.0, with a slightly different opening button mechanism, and I ordered one of them, too. I checked QVC's inventory, and could not find that particular Calista product, but I'll bet if you go to her Calista website, you could. It wouldn't surprise me if she's got another, even newer model coming out that will be a TSV during the holiday season.

I am presuming the blower brushes that are out there don't produce a tight enough curl for you? I have one of those, it blows dry and gives me a "turn under" on the ends, but it doesn't really give me a curl, the brush part is way too big.

Right now I'm not using any tools on my hair, I got it permed last summer. but if I let it grow out and go straight again, I'll go back to my Calista when I do want curls.

This is good to know. I use a longer barrel type and have hair past my bra line. I've been curling my hair for (ack!!!) 40 years and can have the entire head curled in just about 12min. It usually last for 2 days but I do have to touch up some curls the 2nd day and they are much looser the 2nd day. Thanks for the feedback!

@CamilleP OH I think I remember seeing that flat type curing iron but didn't think it would work well, I will FOR SURE go check her site, I can't recall what it looked like but I'll see if I can find it.

I have thought many times about getting a loose perm to save me time, I permed all the time back in the 80s and loved it. I know perms have come a long ways! I'll go see what I can find on the Calista site. Thank you for taking time to tell me about it!

Okay, it's now the AirGlide Pro, not 2.0, she doesn't have the older model for sale any more. QVC might still offer this as a TSV during the holidays, they seem to have a category called "Gifting Gorgeous" pretty regularly.

@CamilleP I think that is the name. I found NEW ones on Poshmark for $25.00!

@SandGirl Maybe Postmark is selling off the original model at a discount, since Maria is pushing the Pro model? Anyway, I'll be honest, I like the original model better, the plates clamp a little tighter on the hair, so it spreads the strand out a little better, and the heat hits the hair more evenly, so the curl holds better.

@SandGirl I look forward to hearing your opinion if you get one and try it out. I know I had to watch the videos on QVC several times to make sure I was getting the hang of it, so you might want to watch the videos on the Calista website to see if #1 you really want one, and #2 how to get the results you want out of it. My only complaint is that the barrel is a 1", and I'd love one just a little smaller, for a tighter curl, but 1" is still better than no curl at all on my stick straight hair in it's natural state. Back when I was growing up, my hair was the ideal, "Marcia Brady" style, but now, 50+ years later, I am SUPER-tired of it, and thus, the AirGlide, and now, the perm.
