Makeup compliment

So a neighbor of mine was going out to a party all dressed up and pretty and as we were talking I mentioned that her makeup looked very nice. She got upset and took it the wrong way thinking I ment she had to much makeup on and said she was going back home to redo it. I tried to explain that I was saying it looked nice (and it was) because it matched her complexion very well but she said to her it meant she had to much on since I made mention of it. So my question here is should you compliment makeup results or not? I think unless it's my daughter I will just let it go.( I wouldn't want her going out with blush on one cheek and not the other) I was just trying to give a compliment but wow I didn't expect that response. Have you received compliments on your makeup ? I have an appreciated it

Don't think it's your fault. Some people are just VERY sensitive to compliments.

My 2cents: A neighbor? No! People are so defensive, angry, self absorbed today. No!

I would not appreciate someone saying my makeup looked good unless it was someone like a daughter, mother, BFF.

My sisters tell me I look the same with it as without so why bother. It's because I don't wear much. I hate makeup.

We were out all day yesterday. I could not wait to get home so I could wash my face.

@Goodie2shoes Sigh. Sometimes you can't win for losing. Just don't mention it again. Seems like she takes compliments the wrong way. Nothing for you to bother with, it's on her. Personally I think it was very nice of you.

It's probably because she's heard it said that if someone compliments you on your makeup they are noticing your makeup, not you, especially now that many go for a more natural look. They seem to want you to believe that they just look that nice without the benefit of makeup. Better to say, "You look nice" or something like that. I've heard the same said about perfume. When I did wear perfume I was very sensitive to wearing too much, so if someone complimented me on it, I was always concernted that I had too much on.

Now, on the few occaions I do wear makeup, I go all out, so I know nobody thinks I'm not wearing makeup.

Maybe she was not used to wearing makeup so for someone to compliment her on it, she thought maybe it shouldn't be noticed so much and she was worried if she had too much or something.

I think you just gave her a nice spontaneous compliment thinking yes her makeup was pretty but I agree with others that she seems just super sensitive and not confident about wearing makeup maybe.

Yes, I guess just say, she looks nice.

One of my daughters always does the most wonderful natural looking eye make-up. I always tell her how much I like it and she says thank you! But everyone is different in how they take a compliment.

Like you could say you look nice and someone might think-wait I don't look nice other times lol?!

Sometimes, yeah, you can't win!

Thats a tough one. I've really never heard a compliment on makeup. On a full on outfit yes of course. Like "You look so pretty and/or I like your look and you always dress so nice."

Honestly if the coment was only with "makeup" I do find it a little weird myself".

I never pay attention and do not engage with neighbors. I find it best to just keep a distance. Just ignore it and don't let it take up space in your head. My late Mom in an over 55 development did the same thing to her. They always said "you look so nice in a demeaning way". It's true because I witnessed it when I visited.

The kitty cats never stop no matter the age. Enjoy and I'm sure you looked very pretty as you were noticed. Don't think otherwise. It is actually a compliment and you bothered to look pretty.

A few years ago I stopped in to the shop owned by the lady who does my facials. I had been running errands and needed to pick up a skin care item that she had ordered for me. Normally when I go for a facial I wear only minimum make-up so she had never seen how I look when I spend more time on my make-up.

Her first words were wow your make-up looks terrific. You've applied it with such a skillful hand it really looks great.

I certainly didn't take it as a criticism. I felt it was a compliment. I would never get upset by someone saying something nice about my make-up.

There's no such thing as looking completely natural when you apply make-up. That's the reason we use it. We want to enhance our good features and play down the features that we don't like.

Why would someone look to be offended when no offense was meant.

@Goodie2shoes I think in the future you should say that her skin looks great! Or you could compliment the lipstick color.

I can sort of understand why she might think that she has too much on by what you said but it really depends on the person.

Recently I was at the cleaners and the woman behind the counter told me that I had very nice skin....of course it was due to my makeup but she made me feel good.

@Goodie2shoes You can't win. Really. No matter what you say or don't say. People can take things the wrong way no matter what. They hear what they expect to hear, not necessarily what was said and meant.

The official "appropriate" compliment would not mention the makeup at all. Makeup is generally worn to make the person wearing it more attractive. Complimenting the makeup doesn't do that. We are supposed to notice the one wearing the makeup looks nice, not that the makeup looks nice. "Wow! You look great!" If she wants to discuss the makeup she will bring it up.

This goes for clothing, too. "You look so pretty today!" is better than complimenting an article of clothing. That said, "That color really looks good on you" might be acceptable. But they might decide that you think all other colors look bad on them....

Compliment the person, not the stuff. It is all about the wording used.

I can see why your neighbor was a little taken aback by the makeup comment even though that wasn't the intent. She may have felt self conscious about the makeup in the first place. Better to just tell someone they look nice and not be very specific.

1) Taking offense happens all the time & on this forum - everyday people feel offended.

2) Telling someone "you've applied it with such a skillful hand it really looks great" is definately NOT something you tell someone.

Compliments aren't always received how we mean them to be.

Last year I was out shopping and arrived at the store's revolving door the same time 3 twenty-something gals were coming out.

One of them saw what I was wearing and stopped to talk .... she said

"Wow, what a beautiful jacket! My grandmother would love that!"

Her grandmother would like it. lol

It's sad to me @Goodie2shoes that a well intended compliment can go so wrong. I guess that's why I don't talk to people much. Good that I live out where my neighbors aren't close.

@Goodie2shoes I wish I could be your neighbor! I love it when people compliment my makeup and I'm not offended when they do . The other day I donated my clothes to a used clothing store and the girl working there said, "I love your makeup! What products do you use?" It made my day to hear that and I told her my favorite makeup products and I complimented her makeup and asked about her favorite products.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I will just say hello and keep my thoughts to myself when it comes to appearance. She's been a nice neighbor so we will leave it at that.

I've had two experiences where strangers asked me what foundation I was wearing - one standing in line at the pharmacy and one while I was away at a workshop!

Of course I was happy to share! One was Mally, and one was Ilia. The lady who liked the Ilia took out her phone and ordered it!

Goodness, I certainly wouldn’t let it bother me. You meant to give a genuine compliment, and it was taken the wrong way. Nothing you can do about that.

I’ve been complimented on my makeup, outfits, specific items of clothing, jewelry, perfumes, etc. I am always very grateful for the kind words, genuinely flattered, and say “thank you.” I spend most of my time around the house and am typically rather dumpily adorned, so I appreciate compliments when I do get the chance to dress nicely.

Some people are extremely touchy and need to be tip-toed around. I find them exhausting to deal with.
