In your opinion, what order do you apply primer and sunscreen? I tried to find out and everything I read had a different answer.

@Janey2 I would put sunscreen on first, then primer...primer is a barrier, so anything that needs to be absorbed into the skin should be applied before primer.

Mineral sunscreens go on last, as they are a barrier. Chemical sunscreens go on first.

The order of application of a sunscreen depends on whether it's a chemical ss or a mineral one.

Chemical sunscreens are applied to clean skin (preferably over a vitamin C serum), let dry completely and then apply primer.

Mineral sunscreens are applied last, before foundation.

@Janey2 My skin doesn't do well with oxybenzone found in chemical SPFs. FDA has found it absorbs into the skin and found in breast milk, urine, etc. It's also found in coral reefs.

I use a physical SPF with zinc oxide and I apply it as a last step in skincare as a barrier to the sun. This has been recommended by my derm as the best ...for me.

Not all chemical sunscreens contain oxybenzone. There are many oxybenzone-free sunscreens available.

All chemical sunscreens are formulated to absorb into the skin where it binds to skin proteins beneath the surface where it provides the SPF rating on the bottle. Absorption is key to allow it to work, usually 15 minutes wait time.

I really like Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen spf 40. It also acts as a makeup gripping primer.

@LTT1 @Janey2 I always prefer my own skincare, spf, serum, etc. If it's combined with something else, I don't know the percentage or if it's something my skin won't like, etc. I try to find my individual products and stay with those much longer than you'd imagine. I don't look for the new shiney penny.

I discovered Super goop last year and really like it as my primer too!

It's not greasy on, and doesn't make my makeup sweat off. I seldom use foundation now with this!

@Janey2 I think the confusion is the naming of SPFs. A physical sunscreen. is also nown as a mineral sunscreen. As long as mine contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as main ingredients I'm OK. I never sit in the sun and always wear a wide brim hat when walking, etc.

@Shanus The new SPF radiance serum has a mineral spf and yet, after emailing them, to go by these instructions it is applied first. I really like this stuff but I'm confused-makes me wonder about how much she really knows about sunscreens.

Serums usually do go on first b/c they are considered to be treatment products primarily. The mineral SPF isn't really going to give enough protection once the product has been disturbed on the surface of the skin. A second sunscreen should really be applied on top. But if the Radiance Serum is all you plan to wear, w/o anything else on top, then that would be an effective sunscreen all by itself.

@Judaline Not familiar w/ that brand or a serum spf. I just followed my derm's advice for an spf with main ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. I use Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50. It has a slight tint better than the tinted DRMTLGY which was a bit dark for my fair complexion. The Skinsceuticals also has the same one in untinted that I use on my neck and chest (if a v nec or blouse) so it doesn't get on my clothing.

Yes, more expensive than most, but I've found this to be most effective and not greasy or oily so I can add my own moisturizer as needed. I do apply this sunscreen last before my foundation.

Mineral sunscreens can be thought of like frosting on a cake. It's the last thing put on but if the frosting gets disturbed then the cake underneath ( like your skin) will be exposed to the elements (the sun).

Thanks. I wrote rms the same time as I wrote you. The product I'm talking about has the same ingredients as the one you mentioned, altho they sure were hard to find on the list. I like this product but there's no way I can use it every day-it's not a large container, so I use it for certain "appearances" for lack of a better word, lol. So I will look into your fave and thanks as usual for your one on one advice!

It is a tinted skin nourishing, mineral-based daily sunscreen serum and soft focus radiant complexion corrector with natural-looking illumination and SPF 30 broad spectrum protection. I like to use it before my foundation, but you can also use it through the day on top of your foundation when you need to reapply it!
