HOME AND AWAY?

I passed by Mally before the laughing and screaching was too much, but noticed a "home and away" powder not powder compact duo. Huh? Many cosmetics and skincare are offered this way, but I'm never away long enough to take along a special smaller size. I'd much rather pour what I'll use in a travel container and use very little makeup on vacation.

If I've started a small powder compact, travel size mascara, jar of moisturizer, when I come home, I have two opened products to use up before they go bad.

What do you think of this sales tactic? I'd rather have one of something at a good price that be offered a duo w/ one item for travel.

Yes, I agree with you! I guess if you travel a lot or you take makeup with you when you work, it would be a good deal. However, I believe most of us would just like a better price and not go that route.

If I travel for any length of time it is International. Gone 10 days to two weeks. I find even those sizes offered away from home also too large. Small and dual purpose items is the key to keep weight and space down. Even contact lens size containers can work.

I usually have plenty of GWP from Estee or Lancome which often are sample small size and toss or refill. I used to even get samples of liquid makeup from the store counter. Sadly... I dont have Cosmetic Counters near me any more as Department stores closed.

If someone travels alot for work as an example, and not having to be light and compact it would save constant refilling. Maybe someone with a second home or cabin would like them as not there alot. I agree Shanus, for most of us not useful.

@Shanus @AngelPuppy1 I never really understood home and away style makeup product sets. I just put my favorite makeup products in my little cosmetics bag if I want to touch up my makeop on the go. I prefer it when QVC makeup branfs offer duos of full size makeup items for a good deal .

I think it's a good idea for people who travel regularly and have a cosmetic bag dedicated for travel.

I actually like the concept of small size products. If you own a lake home or cabin you travel to very frequently these small sizes are perfect.

I think this tactic is a replacement for the 'sample' or introduction/promo sizing that used to be given away in finer cosmetic counters. Other than mascara I've never had to throw out a cosmetic due to expiration. When I was working fulltime I traveled for meetings monthly so I kept a cosmetic bag filled with my overnight needs and I loved these promo sizes! How I miss them!

I buy hair care from a company that regularly sends me sample size products, not the typical tear open use once size but a small plastic bottle of the product. I love them and I've purchased new to me full size products because of it. Have you ever done that? Do you think it's a good marketing technique?

I have mixed feelings. If QVC would actually charge a lot less without the travel size, I'm in. I do agree that Clinique, etc. include a lot of nice sized samples when you purchae from them, which I take with me a lot when I travel, however....

Sometimes the sample size is a better fit where I keep my daily make up and skin care supplies. It allows room for other things ( I have a lot of room, but I also have a lot of things opened at once... i like choice!).

Sometimes I like to send the smaller size to my sister, or give to a good friend to try.

I will leave some things in my away office (lipstick, handcream, etc) and the smaller size is preferred.

I do keep a travel bag and taking something that I use regularly is nice. I once took a sample product on vacation and had a bad reaction to it (and I don't typically have sensitive skin)..

I've bought "home and away products" that can't be put in my own smaller container. I think they're handy for travel.

I don't do "home & away" makeup, but I am actually thinking about getting some skincare discovery/travel size kits for a very basic routine for when DH and I go to NYC later this year. Normally when we travel we drive so I can bring anything and everything. I'm the person who will be gone for five days but brings enough clothing options for two weeks! Then there are separate beauty cases for skincare, makeup, and hair. It's all way too much for NYC. I'm planning on a minimal skincare routine for those days and want to fit everything in one suitcase. Fortunately my makeup routine has been simplified lately and I don't need to take multiple eyeshadow palettes. If I do get the skincare kit (or kits) I'm thinking about, I'll finish them up when I get home, then maybe save those containers to refill in the future.

I guess if you travel alot and don't want to unpack and then re pack again. I never travel anymore--just hate it --but I do try to buy those travel sizes for me at home--I like not having so much that I will never use up. I end up tossing most of it and then feel like I've wasted so much money to boot---

@JeanLouiseFinch A bit off topic, but I have been wondering if you were able to get all your plans settled for your NYC trip. I remember you asking for recommendations here and received many. It seems miraculous to me how quickly you recovered and returned to "normalcy" after your surgery. A true blessing, for sure. I hope your trip is wonderful! Half the fun of a trip is the planning and anticipation.

@SportyShorty07 Thank you for your kind reply. 😉 I am losing the yearn to travel. I live alone and hard to arrange to travel and live three hours from MSP airport. I used to go once a year. I have a friend who travels all over the world often alone every couple of months. She lives in Tx. and is 82.

I go on Utube and there are many ideas. The contact lens case came from Travel Tips by Laurie. She is a Piolet's wife and frequent traveler. She also recommended Gold Bond Hand cream for diabetics as long lasting hand moisture for travel. She has cosmetic case ideas and packing tips, cosmetics included. Many are reasonably priced choices. Sara Murdock is good and takes Rick Steve's tours. She uses a Bare Essential dry makeup in powder with SPF avoiding those liquids as much as possible.

Some people don't want to travel without their tried and true favorites or have skin that may react. Samples work fine for me. I have purchased travel kits but find I again may not use some of the items included, so a waste.

I keep it to a minimum when traveling. I normally transfer to smaller bottles or use sample sachets/bottles if I have them in my stash.

The home and away doesn't come into play if I want something.

@tends2dogs - I'm in the process. So far, I have the airline booked, hotel booked, Birdland table seating purchased, and Rockettes tickets purchased. Tickets for the Museum of Jewish Heritage aren't available yet, likely won't be until the fall. I'll keep checking. I've got some tours reserved but not paid for yet. We may make some changed there. The hop on hop off sounds like something we want to do. They have one around the city and another out to the Statue of Liberty but I also read that the parks department is the only official seller of tickets for Liberty. I have a feeling the hop on hop off company buys them from the parks department and sell them at an increased cost. I haven't been able to work on any of that lately that but after tomorrow I can get back at it. DH was a little iffy on going (safety) but after looking at maps and where we expect to spend the majority of our time he's feeling better about it.

Regarding my health, I feel terrific - as if nothing never happened. God is good!

@Iwantcoffee That is just what I do. I travel often for my job and it is easier for me to have a seperate already prepacked bag. It stays in my suitcase and that is one less thing I need to think about. It makes life easier for me.

@Shanus - I use Mally's Face Defender. I do like it when she offers the travel size. I also like travel sizes of other skin care/makeup products. That size fits better into my airplane plastic makeup bag. When I'm not flying, it's the perfect size to take on a weekend or three-day workshop or training session. I can't refill Face Defender, but I frequently refill other products, pouring the product into smaller, travel-size containers.

When DH and I head anywhere in the car I take my full-size compact!
