How long do you keep any of your makeup? I do replace mascara every 4 months or so even though I do not wear it daily. I just tossed some lipsticks from 2020 and some blush from 2021. Slowly cleaning out...wish the stuff didn't last so long!

I go with the following guidelines that I read somewhere several years ago. Just guidelines, I don't always stick to them.

Mascara 3 months

Creams or liquid, whether it is foundation, blush, lipstick, etc. 12 months

Dry or powder, whether it be eye shadow, foundation, etc., as long as it is dry, 24 months

Toss mascara after 3 to 4 months but keep pencil liners indefinitely. Use foundations right away (liquid and powdered). Blushes: powder indefinitely and stick, cream until I think they're no good. Lipstick is tossed after a year but liner indefinitely.

Mascara every season.

Cream or liquid - until it looks or smells "off"

Powders - I have a lot of Laura's Baked makeup, some of which I've had for years! So I will keep these a long time. Lip and eye pencils that need sharpening - forever, or until they are about gone.

@PhilaLady1 That's the same way I judge makeup, too. Lipsticks can also be checked after 2 yrs. w/ a sniff test and if texture has changed. If you love the shade, you could try to cut the off w/ floss to get to a more fresh area in the bullet but usually not worth it.

I'm more concerned about skincare going bad and use a sharpie on the bottom to date all my products when I open them and keep them away from damp areas in the bathroom....unopened as well.

@bargainsgirl When anything goes bad or passed my "Shanus's rule of toss date", I figure the money's been spent and out it goes. I'd much rather replace a product than compromise my skin. I've worked too hard to keep it smoothe and clear.

SNIFF TEST and texture. Powdered shadows can keep for a very long time. I still have several TOVA , The Secret Shade, eye shadows that are decades old and perfect. The color is gorgeous.

Skin care is another story. I try to keep that as fresh as possible.

An item always forgotten is SPF. It does go bad....less effective...after 6 mos. to a year. I wore a Skinceuticals tinted sunscreen over the weekend (a funeral out in the harsh sun for a few hours and a hat) and got a slight sunburn. Obviously the date on the spf was too old when received...dated 2/24 and I didn't notice when it was purchased. I called and asked to return it for refund or replacement. That stuff is too expensive to toss.

I do not purchase super size anything and even my spfs are the smaller sizes even if more expensive. My larger sizes of skincare items never are finished before the toss date. I purchase sample sizes or minis whenever possible.

I replace my mascara every 4 months, but liquid and powder foundations I keep unless they look bad or smell off. Powder foundations should last pretty long without going bad.

Lipsticks, I don't worry about, because I use them up well before they go bad...lol....

Eyeliner pencils, I keep for a really long time...

The only things I am concerned with are mascara and sunscreen. I don't wear mascara often so I end up tossing new or newly new tubes after just a couple of months. As for sunscreen, I try to find a date on the bottle and tube and replace every summer season.

As long as powders aren’t moldy and smelly and perform as usual I keep using them. I have several mascara tubes open at one time so I try to use them at least a year before tossing them. I rotate them so they aren’t used every day. I also don’t wear makeup every day.

The only thing I throw out is mascara and sunscreen. Everything else I'll keep for a very long time unless something smells off.

( @bargainsgirl - I have lipsticks and blushes from 2020/2021 that are all good)
