For Those Ladies Choosing To Go Gray...

I am going back and forth on the issue. I have not colored my hair in several months so there is quite a bit of gray regrowth.

I have a hair appointment this week and must decide if I should keep up the color or have my stylist match the gray roots and let it go. I am torn.

For those that went gray, were you happy with your decision or did you regret it and go back to coloring?

My hair has been gray for 25+ years and is now solid silver. I'd never go back as I love it. I don't do anything to it; short cut, regular shampoo, air dry with never any yellowing heat, wash & wear then go.

@Mersha :I have no regrets. I hated sitting at the salon for 3 hours for hair color. Tried coloring my hair at home and hated the mess.The process was about a year. One plus: I don't have to ask for the senior discount.😀

I decided to go grey because my hair is thinning and I think the dye was taking a toll on it.

I have embraced the look...so I think. Sometimes I think I look older than my years. Sometimes I feel fine with it. I guess it's just like having bad hair days and good hair days. 😊

I believe, even with the thinning and loss, it looks better than it did, when I had been coloring it. I'm sure I would have lost more if I would have continued coloring.

So there's that to consider.

I won't go back to coloring it and I don't regret it.

@Mersha Do whatever makes YOU happy. I've only had my hair colored once, just highlights. Now that I'm in my 60's my hair is mostly my natural color of light brown in the front and more grey in the back. I'm content with my appearance and don't want to the spend the time or money to change it, let alone put chemicals on my scalp. But to each his own.

I never thought I would go natural--I have naturally dark hair and very fair skin, but went a warm highlighted blonde with short layered hair long ago. After covid it is natural.

To my shock, it is a beautiful color. It is white but not white white, and has lots of silver highlights, and is more a platinum blond than anything.

People comment on it and then can't decided what "color" it is--and I can't either. But it is really pretty and I am very happy with it. All the ladies on my mom's side had really yellowish gray hair.

I got this from my dad's side! Lucky me! So try it, you never know until you try!

I'm 75 and, so far, I REFUSE to go gray. I'm blonde/fair and recently I've been using AGE Beautiful in 10N. It keeps my hair in VERY good condition, which my previous color (L'Oreal Preference light blonde) did NOT. I do my own color and I don't know what I'll do when it gets to be too much for me. But so far I'm being stubborn and REALLY want to keep my blonde hair!

My hairdresser used to put in what she called "low lights" to color part of the gray. I was one of the older employees where I worked but didn't want to look it. After retiring I left it go natural and love it. Low lights might be a way for you to transition to gray.

I started to go grey, but it was like white cotton balls on the top of my head, and salt and pepper everywhere else. I let it go for at least 2 months. I felt older,,,,and I'm in my mid 70s,,,and look younger than I actually am. So, I went back to having my hair done in my previous color, blonde with highlights. The only problem is that I have to have my roots done every 2 weeks, but it looks great. My Mother was still having her hair done blonde until she passed at 91. I say try it, you can always go back to coloring it!

IMO, it's not that simple because not all grays are created equal.

Some women go gray and it's a beautiful shade of silver or white. Others, have a "natural" ugly gray-ish with yellow ... or just not a flattering shade.

There's two things you can do. Try on some gray or silver wigs, take a friend and have her snap a couple photos. Mull over the photos at your leisure.

Or, just go gray and go back to coloring if you change your mind.

@Mersha I hate the expense of coloring. My hair resists color, and I need to pay professional. Too much because my hair grows fast. And the stylist always give me more highlights than I want so they can charge me more.

So I went grey during the pandemic, I was happy with it, but I overheard some random people referring to me as old behind my back. I don't mind me calling me "old" (I'm 62), but don't want people to think of me as old. I was always told I looked younger than my age. And I want to look for a job and discrimination is rampant. And everybody I know colors their hair (men and women). So I am back to coloring. I went blonder so the grey shows less and I can stretch the time a little bit.

I may have stayed with the grey if I wasn't thinking about going back to work.

I don't add anything to my hair to make it "beautiful gray." I think there are different hues and shades to gray. I had salt-and-pepper gray hair which I slid into with frosting my own hair instead of coloring. I started on chemo 1-1/2 years ago and now I have white hair. I think it is a very pretty color of white. Most people who know me think I did something to it to make it white, but I "shed" my hair and as the new hair came in, it was much lighter.

Nope, Never, nadda...I'm NEVER going to go gray. I decided that many years ago. I admit that I'm too vain to purposely look 20 years older than I actually am! Not going to happen! I have a pixie cut, shaved up the back and sides. I'm blonde with lowlight blonde highlights. I rock my hair! I just turned 70.

I don't regret going gray at all. I did it 10 years ago and haven't looked back. It's been so easy to not color my hair. Saved money too. I use a purple shampoo once a week to keep it bright and white.

No regrets. But it all depends. Upon one's hair and one's life. My mom dyed her hair blonde until her mid-90s and until the time when dementia took hold. She always looked fabulous. Me, her daughter, held out. I love the freedom of not having to go to a salon, spend hours in a chair and spend money I'd rather not spend. Still, I can seeing doing it if I got annoyed with the gray. It all depends. Everyone needs to decide what's best for them, and for their life.

When I retired at 62, I decided to stop coloring my hair and let it go naturally. It's a pretty color so I stayed with the gray.

There is no right or wrong answer to this.

I am naturally graying. I have received both harsh and supportive comments from family and acquaintances -- so be prepared.

My main comment to all of my graying friends == you MUST change your usual makeup because in addition to your hair color, as you age your skin also changes and the with gray hair, you need to change up your makeup game and colors --- change your foundation, blush, shadows, lips and be sure your eyebrows are also paid attention and maybe even a bit darker.

Actually it is kinda fun to experiment with makeup -- develop your total new look. And wear NEW colors in your fashion too.
