Beauties,

It has been over six months since I applied my first product from Revlon Buttercream Colorsilk hair color box formula. What I love…when I first applied the scent it is beyond divine. Wonderful to not die from the ammonia. That is a true plus.

The thing I hate…even though I bought the supposed neutral tone shade (Light Brown - neutral) it STILL pulled red tones which is something I was trying to eliminate! Arrrgh! It is now worsened and is on the brassy side of red now badly, after six months. I know brown shades have a light of red in them anyway and the pitfall of box dyed brunettes shades.

So, I guess because I'm going to have to go back to golden browns. I think my next adventure will be to mix the light golden brown with the medium golden brown box shades and see if I can come out with something less than red and hopefully, well after six months of not dying my ends that I won't have a shade of orange! Oh please, God! Not that! I'd rather have the ugly brassy red!

What have been your experiences with the Buttercream formula in brunette shades? Anyone?

I was wondering about this new line. I usually use the root erase in medium brown, but it is practically impossible to find anymore. It is also a revlon product, and I think the brown is fine, very close to my normal hair color.

Do you naturally have red in your hair? I wouldn't want red tones as it isn't my normal hair color, and the medium brown has been fine.

On 1/5/2014 Liz123 said:
I was wondering about this new line. Time has a way of erasing details. But one of the posters on here was a colorist did tell me that brunette shades do have a lot of red in them as a base color so that may be the culprit anyway.

I try not to do my entire head but only twice a year for reducing chemicals in my scalp. This when I tend to change brunette shades at that time. But I may be stuck with either red or gold as a result of using brunette shades because the neutral shade she suggest really didn't work and I will just have to pick. I guess it is back to gold to see if I like it better. What a merry go round!

As far as the Revlon Root Erase touch up product, I hear ya. Drugstore.com was the last place I could find it and all their stock has been depleted in all colors. Such a shame! The BEST touch up root system on the market and it is no where to be found. I finally emailed drugstore.com today and point blanked asked them if they intended to restock this product. We'll see what their response is to my inquiry.

I emailed Revlon about the root erase and got a generic response with no real answer.

So I've been trying regular hair dye and just using half of the bottle. I really have very little gray hair at the top roots, but seeing a few just isn't fun. Guess entering my 30's has a down side. Didn't know that browns have red in them, good to know.

I thought I read that "golden" colors turned your hair brassy. But, you haven't colored your hair in 6 months? I wouldn't expect a hair color to produce results 6 months later. I have my hair colored in an Aveda salon with Aveda hair color for boo-koo $$and hope to get 10 weeks out of it. If box colors are lasting 6 months, then slap my a&& and call me Sally.

But yes, box color does fade and soften and for me that is good as I don't want the flat, dark, severe shade look like you do when color is first applied.

But even so, three weeks AFTER I applied the light brown natural, I had a pro photo session. When I saw the proofs, I was surprised at how "red" my hair was even after being freshly colored in less than a month with NO grey roots showing! That is NOT what I was expecting at all! It has only gotten more red tones than I desired and now, I want to try gold. There are only two choices red or gold as a brunette. If you plan on being brunette, pulling red is what you will have to contend with in Buttercream line that I have found in my experience.

I must be the lucky one as I don't have issues with hair color as long as I do touch-up fairly regularly so six months works for me. But by six months, it really does need freshining up. But I still have two more Root Erase boxes to go before it is a full head again in color. I'm not wasting them.

I used a neutral blond shade and it pulled red on me, too. I had the same problem with the original color silk. For some reason, Clairol is the only brand that doesn't pull red on me, every other brand (L'Oreal, Revlon, Garnier) pulls red on me.

I have never used the Revlon Buttercream. I have been using John Frieda foam in Dark cool pearl blonde to get what I call light brown. Their lightest cool almond brown which I started with was still too dark & not what I would call light brown.

After six months, there is no color pigment left on the hair shaft. So you are seeing hair that has had color treatment - but the pigment, your light brown, has washed off. The exposed cuticle has been altered with peroxide - hence the brassy tones.

Developer is peroxide. With a box color, there are two bottles. "Permanent" color usually includes a 20v (more or less) Developer PLUS the colorant tube or bottle. When You combine the developer and colorant together and apply to hair, the developer action forces the pigment into the hair cuticle. The color stays true for a period of time. Water, sun, heat tools all affect the stability of the color molecule over time. Pigment oxidizes and what is left after 6 months is just the hair altered by peroxide.

ETA: 20v peroxide can lighten hair 2 shades. With darker hair, level 6 and lower, the "lift" is compromised and what happens is orangey tones, unless you leave in longer or use a higher volume peroxide - and that is risky for DIY. On my hair (level 6) I used 20v to get two shades lighter, but I got a bit orange. I used a toner to make it more beige.

I have not used the brown version...but I have used two shades of the clairol blonde root touch up and it works great for me. I do not get a brassy blonde color at all. The A site has a lot of different colors that I don't see in the stores. They had one called light cool brown.

That Root Erase was the best thing since sliced bread and no, it's nowhere to be found. People continue to love the Clairol Root Touch-up (see photo above) but that was nowhere as easy as the Revlon version. What a shame.

I tried the Buttercream version once but found that I didn't have the depth of color with any number of shades in it like the plain ole Colorsilk version. But since I've been using #42 Med Auburn for about 10 yrs, I'm all about the red. Good luck & let's keep trying to bring back the Root Erase!!

Thanks moonstone dunes for the explanation. I appreciate the help. So then if I go golden, I won't have a lovely shade of orange. Nice to know.

Amen, dionline! I just got an email from drugstore.com regarding my inquiry re Root Erase. They are as in the dark as the rest of us! They replied that it has not been discontinued to their knowledge, but has no information as to when any more shipments will be forthcoming. So what does that mean, Revlon? How stupid are these hair color company executives? Why do they make an extremely successful product disappear, tell no one what happened and then have a gag order on its plans? Something must have happened legally for this to take place, imo. I guess we will never know.

Drugstore.com was the last place on earth to find it. Oh well, it is time for a new search. *sigh*

I can't use those no ammonia colors, but then again I go red, red and those seem to have a color spectrum limit. I'm currently Vidaal Sassoon medium vibrant red 5RR from dirty blond. My hair has to be fully saturated with two boxes for shoulder length hair. I comb it through and let it cook with a shower cap on for 45 minutes. It takes a good 10 to apply. Now that I've found this shade, I just touch up the roots and that is all.

Maybe you could buy some drabber and add it to the color to help reduce the red or brassiness. They have worked for me and are in the hair coloring aisle or at the beauty supply shop.

I finally got a box of 42R, which would make an entire comedy movie, it was such a farce getting it, so I am not the exact responder you are looking for. I used it 3 weeks ago.....

My red has faded, which the regular color silk 42 - reformulated without NH3 - did not do, even using the same exact WEN products I have always used to maintain my red (which it does for the first time after coloring my hair for over 27 years since I developed thyroid disease that ended the production of my natural auburn hair) which I do not want to happen.

I do love the smell but I will go back to Excellence with NH3, because I love my red hair and I am willing to endure the terrible smell, if my new caregiver is, otherwise I will be stuck with Buttercream but I will try a lighter color if they have one, because it is also too dark.

I know this is not what you wanted but I figured other readers might be interested in my experience.

On 1/5/2014 Good4u said:

Anyone?

That was my exact experience with Buttercream. They didn't have a light ash brown choice- that's what I use successfully to offset any brassiness. So I got the same shade you tried. My natural reddish undertones appeared within 10 days - and a few days later it was brassy.
