Makeup life

How long do you keep your makeup for? Shadows, lips, blush, etc...

It seems to last me forever and then I get tired of it or something new temps me. I just don't like for it to pile up!

Too long according to an article from a dermatologist I read recently. The doctor said up to three years if it has never been opened. Good to know but I never keep unopened makeup. I buy it to use it. Opened. Mascara and eyeliner not more than 6 months. Lip products not more than two years. All my lip products are way over 2 years. Foundation, blush, bronzer etc up to three year. I think my bronzer is at that three year mark because I only use it in the summer and it's a big compact. I don't use eyeliner but I will toss the mascara I use after 6 months to avoid any eye irritation or infection. I made a little note for myself but generally with the exception of mascara, I'm not too far out of the ball park.

I have just the basics. and only 1 of each. I don't like to store product so I buy what I will use and then repurchase when necessary.

I don't wear bronzer, eyeshadow so I have none of those products.

Right now I have several foundations which is not the norm for me, and I will not purchase anymore until all of them are gone.

Wow. That must deserve some type of prize. Lol. Even if I found such an old lipstick in my stash, I wouldn't use it. You can't tell what's growing in something just my looking or smelling. Working in healthcare all my life, I'm super careful about what goes on or in my body. My bronzer was the oldest thing I had and it's 3 to 4 years old. Maybe I'll toss it at the end of this summer but maybe not.

As long as it's a powder, I keep forever. If it's a cream product then I pay more attention to how it looks, etc. Mascara is the only thing I am diligent about changing out every 3 months.

@monicakm I do the same thing as you- I have makeup that's years and years old! I used a Fenty lipstick the other day from 2020 that I got on clearance at Ulta and I regularly use a highlighter palette from Bare Minerals that I got I think 9 years ago from QVC. I have eyeshadow palettes that are 13 years old. I figure- as long as I don't have any adverse skin reactions, I can use my old makeup. I get very attached to my makeup and its hard to let it go- it would honestly feel like a breakup to me. I don't do well with breakups!

Keep the pretty 23 year old lipstick if you like it and I love how you have a photographic memory for what you did/where you were when you bought makeup- its a Monicakm superpower!

I'm retired so I don't wear makeup every day anymore. I only wear it when I go out which is about 3-4 times a week.

I wear the same makeup colors all the time so I don't have lots of different things to choose from, although, I do have 3 shades of lipstick. Since I'm using the same products every time I never have products that get too old or unused.

My finishing powders last the longest because there's a lot of product in them, and I use them sparingly. I know my contour, blush, and shine reducing powder are at least 2 years old. Probably time to replace those.

A tube of my tinted moisturizer and concealer will last 6 months to a year. An eye shadow palette will last a year for me. Mascara, eyeliner, and eyebrow pencils last from 1-3 months.

Any product that contains water as one of the ingredients should be tossed after 2 years. The antifungal/antibacterial components don't remain effective much longer than that and chances are those products have something growing in them.

Dry powder compacts can last much longer and you can even extend their lifespan by removing a thin layer of powder on top by using tape to remove the surface where bacteria might be hanging out. Dry powder products can be used indefinitely when you do that intermittently.

Any product that has the potential to get inside your eyes, for instance mascara or liquid liners, should be discarded after 3 months.

Lippies should be tossed after two years b/c of obvious reasons.

@SilleeMee ITA as usual. Most of my makeup products are cream except for setting powder, so I need to be more aware of dates. If I remember, I write the date on the bottom.

Mascara goes after 3 months...it's usually dry and lumpy by then anyway. I like pencil liners because I can sharpen them.

Lipsticks can get a wipe over with alcohol to last longer. I learned to put gloss on my hand and then transfer with a brush or my finger. The gloss stays fresher longer and the the color of the gloss doesn't get the lip color inside.

I'm not sure about "clean" makeup because it may have less preservatives.

I just tossed out about 3 or 4 tubes of mascara---finally found my go to but seems like that product goes off the fastest---got rid of the eye shadows in colors too--just wear neutrals now. However some powder blushes that I had ,mostly from BE-- I combined together --some of those were years old. Liquid foundations are the same as mascaras as far as smelling bad--got rid of those too. Facial oils can smell funky too---in the trash they went.

I have a few mascaras and since I go back and fourth and don't wear makeup everyday I usually toss them after a year. Usually they start to get clumpy and I know it's time to replace them. I just did that in the last month. As far as powder products as long as they don't smell and nothing funky I will use them until they go bad. Usually I will go through a tube of tinted moisturizer in less then a year then I will try something else. I don't keep a lot of products. I make a wish list. When I run out I pick something in that category off my wishlist to buy. I just bought the rms blushes and bronzers and I hope they don't go bad quick since they are clean beauty. They are supposed to be good for 2 years.

Lipstick..6-9 months.

Eye Shadow..1 year max

Powder..1 year max

Foundation..6 months

Blush..6 months replaced. I only wear two shades of Chanel blush, so that's when I hit pan.

Mascara...3-4 months as I rarely wear it anymore.

Eyeliner and Brow pencil....4-6 months.

I love makeup but due to having a compromised immune system, I need to be vigilant about anything I put on my face. I am now recovering from pneumonia and will be replacing my lipsticks next week.

My son when he was pre-med worked in Bellevue and saw horrible infections from people using testers in stores. Also eye infections from old mascara. He scared me enough to be very careful and understand cosmetics have a shelf life.

Well I still have my Yardley Union Jack Heartbreaker 3 in 1 compact. It was one of my first makeup items when I was in Junior High back in the late 60's. It still has a bit of product in it too. But I would never use it, I keep it for sentimental reasons.
