Hair Help

Hi, all. My mom has short wiry white hair. She is 85 yo and her hair has always been unmanageble. Rollers do not help at all. She has dementia so can't use hot tools. Do you think a perm would help? I don't know anything about perms. Any advice is appreciated. .

I haven't heard of anyone getting a perm for many years, maybe for the older crowd? Maybe ask your hairdresser, provide a picture? Back in the day when perms were popular I was always disappointed!

I've been getting perms for years specifically because I don't want to have to spend time styling my hair EVERY day which I would need to do if I didn't have a perm. The secret is in finding a hairdresser that knows how to give perms. I had some very disappointing perms when I was younger because hairdressers didn't understand my hair. They left the solution on too long because I had long hair and they didn't realize that it takes perms easily. My current hairdresser uses large rods and checks me at the minimum amount of time and it's always ready.

I have people I've known for years who thought my hair was naturally curly although I've never hidden the fact that I get perms.

I don't like a short cut on me, and even then it would never be just a wash n go style. It would still require some work.

Would your mom be able to sit still and manage a perm and if she has pretty short hair, this may not be an option. Maybe get her a type of pixie cut instead. Something which is just wash and requires no real styling other than combing or brushing and a bit of spray on conditioner.

Lol, I can remember my grandmother and many other people getting those short little perms in the 80s.
The other day, my mom said frustrated and jokingly to the hairdresser, "It looks like I'm gonna have to let my hair go grey and get one of those short little Afros like all the old women used to get." 😂

I had long hair with a perm in the 80s too. I thought it looked great!😃

Don't put your mom through a perm, color or anything other than a simple haircut.

Given dementia and its effects, I'd never put my mom through anything that could sting or take much time.

Use a bit of gel and let it go. She doesn't need rollers, curling irons, etc etc.

I'll bet she looks great just as she is.

My mom must have been your mom's twin! In the end a simple pixie type cut that could air dry was the simplest. Shampooing was a task, easy care was best. If it was short the light socket effect was not so apparent 😢

I use Kendra Styling Lotion that is actually a leave in, non greasy hair control. Remember "Brill Cream"-a little dab will do ya! At Ulta.

I kept my mother's hair cropped as short as possible when she struggled with dementia.

A very short, low maintenance cut that was easy to wash and dry. Could finger comb it.

Absolutely no to perms. Keep it natural and easy.

That's it! The spiral perm! Those were the best. I had to get one. It turned out great too. My senior pictures feature me sporting my lovely spiral locks! 😊🌸

Me too! My hair was long & permed. I can remember scrunching it with styling gel to make it look extra cool! LOL! Of course I was much younger & slimmer so I rocked the style!

Me too! My hair was long & permed. I can remember scrunching it with styling gel to make it look extra cool! LOL! Of course I was much younger & slimmer so I rocked the style!

😃 Scrunching was ESSENTIAL! I always did that too! I can still remember using this spray in product in a purple bottle called Aussie maybe? It seemed to work the best and smelled so good.

I've also used this gel in a giant tub called Dippity Doo. Of course I also had pucks a plenty to make sure my hair fluffed just so! It was extraordinary all the work I put into my hair...everyday! I'd never go through all that now. But, the 80s were the BEST!!!💝🌸

@cheriere Back in the 80's, I also got that long perm that was so popular then. I did that for many years, then by the 90s, I stopped perming and accepted my "straight strings" and had it cut to a chin length bob. By the 2000s, I grew it to shoulder length, and have kept it that length.

@cheriereOMG, Dippity Doo! I remember using that in the 60's

when setting my hair with brush rollers. I even slept on those rollers, torture. What we went through to look beautiful.

Later, I remember sitting under an at home hair dryer, with the big bonnet, with those rollers, to dry hair faster.

Then came the hot curlers and later blow dryers and styling brushes.

A really good hairdresser can achieve a beautiful style simply by working with your mom's curls. Something layered and not too long...something she can easily brush through in the morning. That way, she won't need a lot of tools, maybe even air dry her hair. A little hairspray when she is going out can finish the look @Flyer98

I used the Calista Perfector on my mom's hair when she was in assisted living. It doesn't get that hot and it worked well on her white thick hair.

I did close to the same thing!

Perm, big hair 80s until the early 99s when I grew out my perms and bangs...whew! The bangs were a tough stage to, believe me lol.

Then, I got it cut in the "Jenny McCarthy"style because she was really popular on MTV during that time. Then, I let it all grow to one length but through the years have had many mishaps. These would range from killing it trying to color myself, to finally a variation of my current style. 😃

Its amazing we've endured the ride in this hair roller coaster!💝🌸

@haddon9 @Enufstuff @cheriere I am loving all of your 80's perm stories, ladies! I bet all of you rocked that big, beautiful 80's permed hair! The scrunching and gel was essential to 80's hair based on my movie and magazine research . Rock on, ladies!
