Makeup Help for Daughter

My daughter doesn't makeup. She does have acne problems & has been going to a dermatologist for over a year. Note: her acne is mostly hormonal,, which on know is difficult. Looking for recommendations for something light, that she can apply every morning (quickly) that will tone down the overall redness in her face and help cover the breakouts where possible. I was thinking something tinted? I know green helps with redness?

Acne can be hard on a youngster and sometimes even a derm can't completely eradicate it.

Can you take her down to Ulta so her color is matched? GD found some nice things there. And of course a gloss for a treat 😍

It Cosmetics has a line sold at Ulta that is for skin redness.

It has been hard. It gets somewhat better, never completely gone, but that doesn't last long. She'll be going off to college this fall and I'm hoping to find something that will make it less noticable for her. Without making it worse. I will eventually take her to Sephora or some place else, but would like to do some research first.

@ScrapHappy You're a lovely Mom to be so helpful with your daughter's skin in securing dermatologist appointments and trying to get products that she would enjoy! I'm 35 and still work to manage some breakouts that pop up once in a while. Has your daughter tried Light Therapy Masks? I've used the QURE light mask everyday for over a year and it has completely transformed my skin. I think that a color correcting primer could be great to wear under some pressed tinted powder or foundation- Maybelline makes a great Master Prime Redness Control Primer. If she wants a tinted moisturizer that's light on the skin, BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 is really great . Also, I want to let you know that when I went to college, I had hormonal acne and a lot of my classmates did too- so its totally normal to have it, and I bet your daughter is an absolutely beautiful and lovely girl .

If you don't mind....since she is old enough for college, empower her and validate her choices. Or whatever the current buzz words are 🤣 Been thru it with my kids and now the grands and they will smile when they pick a winner, which is priceless.

The dermatologist has never mentioned light therapy masks. To be honest, both myself and my daughter are feeling a big discouraged with the dermatologist for a while now. She just went to office this week. Changing medications again and this time comes from out of state pharmacy due to special compounding. Thank you for the recommendations.

@ScrapHappy Has she asked you for help? Is she looking for makeup? If not, let her be. Nothing is a confidence killer like your mom sending the message you you don't look good. I'm just saying this because I've been there--and I don't know you, but thought I'd toss this out.

I had a terrible self image in high school (and all my life) and when I see photos, that doesn't fit. So just saying--be careful because this is tricky territory! Best wishes and success to you and your daughter!

Yes. She always comes to me. With the last visit to the dermatologist this week, we've been discussing to switch to products from the store, like PanOxyl and Differin Gel. I too will have a pimple here and there and Differin and PanOxyl helped me. We're going to try this last medication prescribed and see how that goes.

My son had acne when he was a teen. At first I took him to the derm who prescribed an oral antibiotic. It cleared up his skin beautifully but I realized that this was not a good option for going forward.

I searched online and found a video of a guy who started this company & product called "The Regime". It's a cleanser, treatment & moisturizer. DS just used the treatment (benzoyl peroxide gel) & cleanser. This was over 20 years ago and the product was very inexpensive at the time.

So I decided to give it a try and he used it religiously. His skin cleared up beautifully!! I was amazed. I hate to sound like a commercial but this product really worked for him. Even going into his 20s he's continued to use it and has very nice skin.

I just took a look and it's still being made. I'm not sure if new people own it today. The site is Acne dot org or you can find it on Amazon.

Today DS is 36, has great skin and I believe he uses a mild cleanser like Nutrogena but he still uses a benzoyl peroxide gel too. I just asked him and he's using a product called "Dr. Song" which is cheaper than The Regime.

I hope this helps....not sure about makeup but you've gotten some good tips on that here.

@ScrapHappy I think it never hurts to switch dermatologists if you're unsatisfied with the current one. I had a great dermatologist in my early 20's that really helped me after i switched to her. Panoxyl face wash helped my acne a lot in my 20's, but it can be a little irritating at first on the skin so I recommend for her to use it 1 or 2 times a week to start with. I really like Differin gel- I've used it for the past 3 years every other day as a way to maintain clear skin- there will be a skin purge period for the first month or so when your daughter uses Differin, but then the results will come . Differin is gentle and very effective. Also, if your daughter wants a gentle everyday cleanser for acne, i highly recommend La Roche Posay Purifying Gel Cleanser- its affordable and really helps- I use it every morning as part of my skincare routine.

@ScrapHappy Great! A very well respected derm recommended Differin to me when it first came out. I have very sensitive skin and La Roche-Posey products have worked well for me, as well as those pimple patches you can get when I get an occasional pimple. Good luck!

@haddon9 This sounds similar to ProActive that was sold on QVC and on infommercials. Judith Light was the spokesperson for years. They had two cleansers, a benzyl peroxide and a salicylic acid version. I am not sure if it is still available, but it worked well.

I agree about avoiding the antiobiotic route if you can.

I looked it up and it rebranded in 2021 to Alchemee It is available on Amazon.

She has anxiety. Sees a therapist. It's a work in progress.

Tried Pro Active. Same thing with antibiotics and the dermatologist. Always wants to go back to them when they weren't that effective in the first place. With the last appointment, they bougt up birth control pills and spiroaldactone, which again, really don't want to go the route. Either does my daughter.

Please check out Clinique. They have both anti-acne and anti-redness skin care and cosmetics products, and they're good and not too expensive.

Adding my 2 cents- Both my brother and I have dealt with acne. My brother’s was very bad during his teen years. The dermatologist put him through the gamut of acne medications as well as topicals. Absolutely nothing worked. As a final resort, they put him on Accutane, which has to be monitored for several reasons. He was discouraged with the outcome of after two months, but the derm told him to stick with it. After the third month, his face finally started clearing up and has been completely clear his whole life.

As for me. I rarely had breakouts in my teens, but in my 30s started getting really bad breakouts. My dermatologist said it was likely hormone related and it wasn’t all that uncommon. I tried a few topicals and they didn’t help. She prescribed an antibiotic along with a diuretic. She said they found it to be effective for hormonal acne. A couple months on that and my face cleared up. Of course I’ve had the occasional breakout since then but nothing like I had in my 30s.

Covering the redness was never something I was able to achieve. I see you have a lot of recommendations here, though. It definitely affects your confidence. Wishing your daughter the best!
