Question. Can my skin be soft and dry at the same time? My back has been itching like crazy but it's soft too. TIA. 🤔

Yes, softness has nothing to do with itchiness. You could be allergic to something, like your laundry detergent or a medication

You could have an illness that causing it. Often liver, kindney or thyroid problems can cause itchiness.

If it becomes excessive, check with your doctor.

Have you changed laundry detergent?

Have you changed any bath & body products?

Do you shower with exceptionally hot water?

Have you worn new clothing that hasn't been washed?

Have you changed anything in your diet?

I don't think one is inclusive of the other. Your skin can be both at the same time.

@Carmie. No same laundry detergent and my medications are the same. I don't think that I have illnesses that you mentioned. Thank you

To both of you I have a dermatologist appointment on Tuesday for another matter. I'll be definitely asking her about this itching.

Taking hot showers will do it. Also when you shampoo your hair and rinse it, the rinse water goes down your back and that could cause issues for some people.

@DbinMd2 Winter dryness can also cause itchiness.

Heating the house lowers the humidity and

that can cause dry itchy skin.

A humidifier helps, but I use Eucerin Calming Cream

which is formulated to help with itchiness. My legs get

very dry in winter.

A small vaporizer/humidifier in the bedroom also

helps with dry sinuses, in winter. Plus it keeps my face

from becoming dry, along with a night cream.

Living in a low desert climate (think surface of the Sun temperatures, lol) I can relate and sympathize. Please do make sure to mention when you visit your dermatologist...they should be able to help. I hope you get relief soon!

A few years ago I had an itchy back all winter. I ended up using a body wash by Eucerin that was specifically for itchy skin. It went away with the warmer weather, and I haven't had an itchy back with subsequent winters. While dry air could've been the cause, you would think when the air became dry again the issue would return.

@SilleeMee @DbinMd2 I had an issue with my condtioner not fully rinsed off my back since it's usually the last step in the shower. i have a hand held shower head and make sure I take it down and do a full rinse on my body to get soaps and conditioenr off myself before stepping out. I also lotion up while my skin is still damp.

My mom has an area of her back that often itches and has for years. Nothing has helped. She’s been to a few dermatologists and was told she has what‘s called neuropathic itching. I believe it’s uncommon, though.

@DbinMd2 my back, particularly one spot, always starts itching in the winter. I know it's from less humidity in the air. This spray is a godsend! After drying off in the shower, step back in and spray your back best you can. It's actually not hard to do. You will get immediate relief that lasts!

For putting lotion on my back I use one of these...'back buddy'. This one is vinyl so it's easy to wipe clean (can be laundered also) plus the hand straps are non-stretchy so you can get a good grip. Found mine on eBay fro about $10.
