Nailtiques 2 Problem Warning

I have strong long natural nails that I paint myself weekly. I always use a basecoat. I began noticing some small peeling spots on my nails. After reading around the web, Nailtiques 2 is the most suggested for peeling. I've been using it for a month now & I've noticed the white part of my nail is moving towards my cuticle. Meaning that more of my nail is now not attached to my nail bed. I did some online research & found the term, onycholysis which is a condition where your nails lift away from your nail beds. A cause of this condition & the only one that fits for me, is the hardening of my nails. I know Nailtiques 2 is also used as a nail hardener & let me tell you it works. My warning is if you already have hard, strong nails, then do not use this product for peeling as I did because this may happen to you. If you look up onycholysis, then the pictures that look like the white part is zigzagging towards the cuticle is what mine look like.

What I now need to do is moisturize & keep the underneath of my nails dry since now they are more likely to get a fungus because the underneath goes so deep. After I wash my hands, I flick them to flick out water still clinging & then I take a small piece of cotton ball & run that under my nail. It's annoying. Two times a day I've also been applying tea tree oil underneath as well to stave off fungus. My nails grow fast so hopefully the unattached part will quickly grow out & I'll have normal attached nails again. My concern is that this becoming no longer attached to my nail beds may continue for a while even thought I am no longer using the Nailtiques 2.

I plan on trying Nailtiques 3 since that sounds like it is for moisturizing, but not right now. Once thing at a time. :-) I have argan oil, Sally Hansen's apricot cuticle cream, Perlier's rosemary nail oil, Hollywood's oils both the tea tree & the olive oil and Jergen's shea butter lotion & they are all going on & under through out the day and before bed. Also annoying.

Hopefully this will help someone.

Thanks for the warning. I have naturally soft nails, so I have had no problem with Nailtiques 2. I am curious as to why you chose that formula in the first place since your nails are naturally hard? That is not a challenge, just a mild curiosity. Nailtiques 2 is designed for "soft, peeling, bitten, weak or thin nails."

There were no recommendations as to not use it if your nails are already hard/strong. I read their website before purchasing & there are no warnings nor recommendation not to use it for just it's peeling benefits. Also, I don't know if you've noticed that most nail products tout that they will help with multiple problems. I've never found a product that states it is just for peeling.

My nails are very difficult to grow out after gels for many many years. Where did you find the information that the condition is related to nailtiques though? Thank you again!

I use it and love it. Sounds like you have a nail fungus.

It's not a fungus. This is from the Mayo Clinic "With a condition known as onycholysis, the fingernails become loose and can separate from the nail bed. Sometimes detached nails are associated with injury or infection. In other cases nail separation is a reaction to a particular drug or consumer product, such as nail hardeners or adhesives. Thyroid disease and psoriasis — a condition characterized by scaly patches on the skin — also can cause nail separation."

Specifically references consumer nail hardeners.

I have always had soft, peeling and spiting nails and actually use 2+ frequently. I F2+ on and off for over 10 years without any problems and I have never encountered anyone with problems such as this.

If you read the directions on the Nailtiques website you would have never developed this problem because you would have used Formula 3!

I realize your intent was to help, but this thread should not be titled a "warning" since if you had read the instructions, you would have never had this problem.

I am concerned this thread will scare way people who genuinely need Formula 2!

And I am concerned for you. this type of nail problem may indicate a medical contion and not be a result of nailtiques at all but simply starting nailtiques at the same time as this problem began.

If I were in your you position I would make an appointment with my derm and if I didn't have one, my PCP.

annacat is 100% right. OP, you were using the wrong formula. You can not blame the product. Those of you with nails that are soft, peeling, splitting etc., this product is amazing. I had thee most pathetic nails for years. Not sure where I even heard about this product but I bought the smallest bottle available. I've hardly made a dent in the teeny bottle and my nails are SO much stronger. And they grow! I can actually paint my nails now! I highly recommend this product but please check their website to make sure you are buying the correct formula.

I'm reading the box that my Nailtiques formula 2 comes in & it states, "Nail Protein", "For Soft, Peeling, Bitten, Weak or Thin Nails.

It lists itself as a nail protein not a hardener & also says it's for all these things and uses the word "or" not "and" which is why I purchased it for peeling.

I also just reread the pamphlet insert & nowhere does it say do not use for just peeling if you have strong nails.

I did my best folks at reading before buying & using, but sometimes there is still a problem.

Again, I hope that this doesn't happen to anyone else.

On 1/4/2014 squeezebox said:
annacat is 100% right.

Thanks, but at this time I do believe it to be the Nailtiques 2 that has caused my nails to lift from their nail beds. I'll keep you & everyone else that reads my post updated.

I ordered Formula 2 last night. I am having peeling and splitting so it is the right formula for me. At least right now.

I have that same condition on one of my nails( from using nail glue for a torn nail) and developed a fungus/yeast infection under the raised nail. My derm suggested soaking my nail in a solution of 1 tb. vinegar and water, ten minutes, twice a day. The infection is gone and the nail is slowly reattaching.

Hope this helps.
