Okay ladies. I have something important to talk about

Today at work I talked with a 22-year-old young lady who has no skin care routine. I have been noticing that her skin is less than desirable for her age but haven't said anything about it. He is truly a beautiful young lady long blonde hair to die for. She confessed to me today that she rarely washes her face at night and that she is trying to begin a skin care routine because of her upcoming wedding day in April. So what do you think that I could tell her that she needs to use for a routine for a beginner to use for skin care? I know a lot of you ladies are very very knowledgeable and could you give me some examples of serums or moisturizers or eye creams that I can tell her to use with specific brands? I know she has a budget so it will have to be probably less than $25 for each item. She gave me her phone number and she wanted me to send her pictures of everything that I thought that would help her start a simple routine. Thank you beauties!

I know she doesn't drink or smoke. I laughed at her today because she told me bought patches for eye wrinkles and they fell off while she slept 😂 she was really indignant about that. It was really cute. I forgot how young 22 can be lol

She's 22. If her complexion is clear (no breakouts) I would keep it simple.

A drugstore cleanser such as Aveeno would be fine.

Perhaps a tinted SPF for daytime.

I don't think I ever thought about a night cream when I was 22.

Don't overwhelm her. Start slow.

As I mentioned in another thread, I didn't have any skincare routine that I can really remember unitil I was in my 30's. I washed my face in the shower with Dial soap. It's antibacterial. I don't think my complexion suffered. However, if she's sleeping in her makeup she's not doing her skin any favors. Not wearing makeup every day is one of the best things I did for my skin.

That beeing said, I would suggest a gentle cleanser like Aveeno. I use Aveeno Positively Radiant Brightening Cleanser and have for years in the shower. Besides that, maybe point her in the direction of Neutrogena or Oil of Olay. I can't use Oil of Olay products since they break me out, but in general I think they are good products. My husband seems kinda fond of Neutrogena products. He's not big on skincare, but uses a couple of things.

Keep it simple.

Cleanse

Tone

Moisturize

Those are all the steps that she needs at this age. If she is overwhelmed by suggestions, she will not do anything.

Clinique is my favorite because they have all three products and it is easy to understand. She probably needs Group 2. Tell her to follow the steps when she brushes her teeth.

So many questions - dry skin, combo, oily, sensitive, acne-prone? Since we don't know any of that I'll give suggestions on brands for her to look into that would be in her price range

Cleansers - LaRoche Posay, CeraVe, Naturium, Neutrogena, and I'm sure others at the drugstore that I'm forgetting. It would depend on her skin type as to what type of cleanser she would need.

Moisturizer - Must have SPF! Either in the moisturizer or separate.

Vitamin C - There are some Vit C's on Amazon - Dr Bonners always gets good reviews. Naturium has one I think that would be in her price range. Timeless has one that may be around $25 but I used to get it on sale so always paid less.

Niacinamide - Naturium has an excellent one that is in her price range.

I would start with AM cleanse, Vit C, moisturizer either with SPF of 30 or higher or a separate SPF if not included in the moisturizer. PM - cleanse, Niacinamide, and moisturizer without SPF.

That would be enough for her to start.

@Midmod I can still remember buying my very first skincare kit. I was in college and working a part time job with VERY little pay. The lady who owned the children's boutique I worked at also sold a line called Beauty Control. It took me a month to purchase the entire kit outright. I was so proud and felt so grown up.

I would point her in the direction of Clinique. They offer very affordable starter kits that include face wash, toner and moisturizer. She can add an eye cream for around $30 later if she likes. Since they're almost always offering gifts with purchase, she will get some good free stuff and a bag too.

I may also recommend she visit a few cosmetic counters and inquire about getting started with skincare. Most will give very generous samples. 😊

If she is invested in learning about skin care, she will do it. Otherwise she'll probably get tired of hearing about it from someone. Just my experience with things like this. Most people today really don't want to be told anything it seems.

Maybe I am just cranky today. Well, MORE cranky.

Besides cleansing, moisturizing, sunscreen and vitamin C serum...you start losing collagen in your early 20s so start using retinol also.

@cheriere Great minds run in the same channel when it comes to Clinique. I decided to edit and add a picture I had remembered with a tooth brush, so it probably was not there when you saw my post. I am concerned that this young lady needs to start slowly with nothing that could cause a skin flare up before her wedding.

A few things come to mind .....

Maybe someone here knows of a youtube video for beginners?

Perhaps she wouldn't be overwhelmed if she bought only one thing at a time ... starting with a facial cleanser and then slowly going to something else.

There's a good skin care and makeup line called No 7 which sells at Target.

The LAST thing she wants to do is go to a makeup counter at Nordstroms or Macys and end up in the hands of a sales rep that will relentlessly talk her into buying $200 of stuff she'll never use.

@Midmod - How nice that she trusts you enough to help her with this!

Do you know if she is thinking drugstore or higher end?

My mom had beautiful skin and started me early. Her one piece of advice was never go to bed without taking your makeup completely off. I never have, no matter how tired I am!

Like others have said, I would keep it simple, but advise her to wear SUNSCREEN every day. I do, even if I'm inside on a rainy day.

My routine is pretty simple, and at 22, she would be fine with a simple routine too.

I would start with cleansers - one to take makeup off, and one to wash with in the morning.

I have combo skin. Years ago a dermatologist told me to stay away from toners. I have. I've also never used AHA's or BHA's, or serums, etc.

I use sunscreen and a light moisturizer. I don't use a separate eye cream, although I used to. My doctor told me to look for one with caffeine as an ingredient.

So here are a few things I like:

I take my makeup off with various products. I like an oil-based one, or a cream that melts. Right now I'm using IT Bye Bye Makeup Remover. If I'm not taking makeup off, right now I'm using First Aid cleanser to wash. A few times a week I use a rice polish (Tatcha). My doctor is not crazy about exfoliation for me, but she lets me use it a few times. I used to:

I use Josie Maran sunscreen. I put that on first.

@Midmod I think you would be wise to send her a text. Say: Is your skin normal, dry, oily, or sensitive? With that information you can filter though the suggestions.

I don't know what region of the country you live in and how much intense sun you get, but the SPF comments are important. After all, wearing SPF regularly will definitely affect how she looks when she's 50 ... and beyond.

SPF isn't just for "today" ... it's also preventative for what she'll look like "tomorrow".

I would keep it simple for her and suggest the good drugstore products as well for her starting out.

1---cleanser

2---daycream with SPF

3---a nightcream

4--maybe an eye cream too.

I just HAVE to say, now, at age 70, I have fantastic skin--always have, but have wonderful genes to thank, as well as my mother teaching me about basic skin care in my early teens. and have used great products the last 30 some years too. I taught my daughter the same and she has lovely skin at age 41. I can count on both hands, the number of times I never washed my face at night and still have fingers left over.
