My nails on my thumbs are splitting in the middle-advice please

My two thumb nails are splitting on the outside down on the middle of my thumb, not where the skin and nail meet. I keep my nails fairly short, so I don’t know what’s causing this. It’s been happening repeatedly and catches on fabric. I also have to cut into the nail to get rid of most of it. Any advice much appreciated.

Are you taking vitamins,i know you have lost weight?

Maybe they are dehydrated, try applying a good nail oil like Solar Oil

I am not trying to diagnose you here, but my nail problems have to,do with being diagnosed with Lichen planus.
I soak them in a solution of borax, which has kept the condition under control.

Good to know! I have a couple that get those vertical grooves too and nothing I've tried has worked at all.

I have to take multivitamins and sublingual B12, and iron plus Citracal. So I don’t know if that’s it? My nails are not discolored.

I am convinced it is a genetic disposition. I have one nail that has had a ridge down the middle since I was in my 40's and is now a split. I have always taken plenty of high quality vitamins. My mother had the exact same condition.

I would keep them moisturized and covered with a band aid or a piece of tape(so they don't catch on anything)

Have you tried any kind of treatment polish?

My mom had a similar problem and she bought a polish like product called "I ON NAILS". It helped her nails grow. So I tried it and my nails got much stronger,too. I noticed an improvement in about a week or so. We bough it at Wal Mart.

My ring finger nail kept spliting. I tried a number of products but the only one that helped was OPI Nail Envy.

My nails were getting awful and a friend suggested taking zinc so I started taking it every morning. It took a few months but wow what a difference! Healthy strong nails with less breakage.

After years of beautiful natural nails, the outer 2 nails on my left hand developed ridges and began to split at the middle edge. Nothing was different diet-wise.

After a few rub ins with the product below, ridges became less pronounced and the splitting stopped. Side benefit: cuticles improved too. Found at CVS ( make certain it is the bright, shiny gold bottle vs. the matte gold which has nail polish in it ):

I am going to post this here just in case anyone has an interest.

I use clobetasol ointment (rx) on my Lichen nails. As you can see from the picture the state of my nails is nothing to write home about!

I cannot use polishes on my nails or anything with chemicals... lichen responds to very plain things like oilive oil.

Borax is a lifesaver...just started reading actual books (kindle) about getting boron into our bodies...

when I take a complete dose of trace minerals liquid boron, my nails turn out white and healthy the very next day.

Also, I take Andrew Lessman marine collagen peptides with msm and my nails become stronger/longer!

Mine have ridges too, a couple of the split...hate my nails. Nothing helps me. I'm going to derm in a couple months, I'll ask about this.
