Shampoo to purposefully fade hair color?!!

I had my hair done the other day and it didn't go that well. It came out very very dark, which is exactly what I didn't want - I had this sort of thing happen once before many years ago. So is felt like a sad deja vu. Anyway, hair person tried to lighten it twice with a solution. The color barely budged. Then at my suggestion she added some highlights to help add some light to this very very dark situation. Those areas lifted pretty well. Final gloss over to add some shine to this overworked over dark hair issue she created! Now I'm home and I need to lighten my hair more. Of course all of my shampoos are gentle and free of sulfates. I also have very dry hair and was looking forward to working on making it very healhy with great hair products. But now I need to lighten this hair!

Suggestions needed for a shampoo to fade my color and not damage or overly dry my hair. Does that hybrid exist? All suggestions would be very very appreciated.

I was advised by a color expert at Revlon years ago what to do and it works.

Use either a dandruff shampoo or a clarifying shampoo, lather it onto DRY hair, leave on for at least 30 minutes before rinsing, you can keep repeating until desired results are achieved.

A clarifying shampoo will remove fresh color. You might give it a try. I had a hairdresser wash my hair with the old powdered Tide. Tide was hard on colored fabrics but kept whites glistening. I do not know if that stuff is even available today. If you have a Sally's close by, they may have a product designed to remove color. At one time their employees were very knowledgeable.

I would use a hot oil treatment on my hair after trying to remove the color. Ask Sally if they have a good one. Cover it with a plastic cap and let it set for 20 or 30 minutes before washing out.

Mix a little 20v hydrogen peroxide into a little bit of shampoo. I mix in a non metal container...plastic dish is good. Buy the peroxide at Sally or make sure it is the type made for hair. The cream version is less harsh.

Just shampoo without rubbing scalp being gentle. Let sit on hair for 5 minutes and rinse in cool water.

That's how professional colorists do it.

You can buy color remover, but I don't recommend it. It is very damaging.

The same thing happened to me with one of my hair colorings. I looked under my sink for an older shampoo. I found Vidal Sasoon (remember that). Older shampoos always were harsh.

I looked on Amazon and Clairol still makes a clarifying shampoo now called Healthy Scalp and Shampoo Two and Paul Mitchell have similar products.

I mean my original/other problem ... is that I'm not really mobile at this point (had an accident and broke my knee!) so I don't picture myself being able to go in and out of the shower more than once a day for a treatment or be able to leave something in my hair for half hour before rinsing it out. Probably won't want to use any oil either. Safety first!

I'm so upset that this person did this to my hair. It is sooo dark. She tried the professional lifting solutions - looked like powdered detergent that she mixed with water or something but it didn't do much. The highlights are helpful, but the base color still shows through of course and is harsh. I just wanted to feel better about myself/life. I was def. Overdue for color and cut, and wanted cross this off my to do list! Yikes. Ok, whine over. I will say tho the other time this happened to me that after making my hair almost black that hair person lifted the color of my hair so much that it was a weird light orange color. That began another hair color / hair health odyssey. Took many moons to really fix.

I'm going to try the dandruff or clarifying shampoos or prell and see how that works. Send good thoughts!!

Any other ideas, please post.

There is a product, I believe called Color Oops, that removes hair color. It is designed to remove it all though, and then you would more than likely want to re-color right afterwards since the color that will remain will be what your hair was lifted to while coloring your hair. It's often that shade of orange that people tryng to go blonde have trouble getting past.

@Carmie What exactly do you mean by a little hydrogen peroxide? Half a teaspoon, 1/4 tsp, pea size? I might give this a try.

Old fashioned Prell strips color. I have no idea if it's even made anymore but it's what hairstylists used back in the 70s and 80s.

It’s hard to recommend a product that helps fade color without drying it out. I was going to suggest Dawn dish soap, but like any other stripping shampoo, it is going to dry out your hair. This happened to me years ago but it was because my overly highlighted hair was so porous when I decided to go back to my natural medium brown. The color was extremely dark. It did fade over the next month or two substantially just from regular washing.

What products did she use - brands permanent color semi perm . She what the salon owner has to say and they can call the hair product company . Worse than to dark a color is having your hair so badly damaged it breaks off

@Carmie Hi, well I did mention she tried to lift the color (i.e. make it lighter) - not sure of hair lingo sometimes. I do not know what she used but it was a powder that she mixed with a liquid of some kind. We (she) did that 2 x. It did lighten, but just a little bit. She kept on muttering like oh wow, it's it's not really lightening, wow, it's really dark. Wow, you must have really pourus hair.

Maybe I'll text her to find out more about the hair color she used.

The mayo sounds like an interesting idea. That is for conditioning but not for fading, right? Shampoo before not after?
