Using a tee shirt on wet curly hair?

I believe all cotton is preferred. It's also my understanding that you're supposed to squeeze the water out of the hair, not vigorous rubbing.

@Imaoldhippie I've had my hair professionally cared for by different professionals for decades. They've all used 100% cotton towels, and that's what I use at home, too. I know the stylist I use now never rubs back and forth, just presses to squeeze out the excess water.

@Imaoldhippie It doesn't cause friction like a towel would. Like others have said, the idea is to squeeze the water out or wrap your hair in the shirt to absorb teh water rather than rub and create friction. Less friction equals less frizz. Use of a cotton t shirt is particularly recommended for curly hair.

The fibers on a regular towel will lift the cuticle and damage hair, the t shirt is a smooth gentle surface. Satin pillow case will work also.

@hopi @ninjawife @millieshops @JeanLouiseFinch ..............Thanks all for the good advise. I figured that cotton was the answer to using a tee shirt. I have never rubbed my hair with a towel. I have always squeezed it, but I still get some frizz, so I will try 100% cotton.

I use a T-shirt. I turn upside down after I turn the water off and use a wet brush to get any tangles out and then wrap the T-shirt around my head. I perm, but run into many of the same problems as naturally curlies, so I follow some of the curly girl methods.

Most bath towels are 100% cotton. Of course some people use microfiber towels too, but I don't think they are all that common.

No one should be rough on their hair while drying it. You should always wrap your hair in a towel and blot it.

If you do not want to use a tee shirt, towels sold to use on a baby work well. They are larger than a tee shirt too. Buy the 100% cotton KNIT terry. They are much like tee shirt material, but thicker.

Wet hair is very fragile. Be careful you don't cause breakage. Use a very wide tooth comb and always comb from the bottom of the hair shaft working your way up to remove knots.

The t-shirt is a "curly girl method" holy grail! 100% cotton keeps the curls from frizzing, plus allows the curls to take their defined shape while drying. T-shirt drying is great! I have found some t-shirt material turbans which are the greatest invention since sweet tea! The brand I use is called Evolve.

Either a t-shirt or the turban work great. There are a lot of YT videos on how to tie the t-shirt. I use a short-sleeved t-shirt, but some videos show long-sleeved one (probably better for longer hair). Anyhoo, try it; it is life-changing! I never let a towel touch my hair.

I don't let my hair dry in the T-shirt. It's only for getting all the drips out. I like to apply my styling products to set hair. If it starts to dry, I'll spritz with water. After that, I air dry. Wrapping my head in a T-shirt after applying styling products just seems like a waste of product, but I know a lot of curlies do it.

IMO, cottton terry cloth towels, etc. have loops int he fibers that tangle and pull on any hair type. my stylist for years has ditched all her towels and changed to microfiber for all her clients...curly or straight.

I purchase my microfiber ones on Amazon in pks. of 3 at a reasonable price. Tee shirts got soaked with water too quickly and then were not able to absorb wrapped on my head.

@Shanus, I don't like microfiber because it sucks too much moisture out of my hair before I can put my products in. Plus, most microfiber has little loops too, at least all the ones I find.

I got one honeycomb patterned one without the loops in a cleaning kit and I love it for my mirrors, but it's much too small for wrapping a head.

I have been using a tee shirt on my hair for years as per reommendation from Chaz. It is more gentle than usng a towel. Sometimes I do use a towel but I don't rub vigorously.
