Concealer question / help

Hi,

I'm trying new concealers - the one I have loved has been discontinued, of course (eye roll). I stocked up but it's time to find something new. I've ordered different brands and I'm finding that many of them are turning my under eye a greyish color - not a good look. What does that mean? Does that mean I've tried too light a color? Or not yellow enough? Not orange enough? Not something enough? (Fill in that blank). I'm finding this with many and find it odd as I haven't had this issue before. I know it would be best if I would just go to a store and get color matched, but I'm not able to do that at this point and could really use a concealer! Thoughts/guidance would be appreciated.

I have two favorites...don't know if this helps or not.

Sisley is expensive but contains an ingredient that also tightens. So on those days that I have indulged in salt and have "bags " under my eyes, I use a thin little brush and apply it in the hollows. It lights them up.

My favorite newest concealer is by Natasha Denona. It is fool proof. I apply it then look a few minutes later and it usually has bender itself.

Never have had concealers turn grey ... choose in ND the color/type you usually wear. I'm "rosey" so I choose R___ it has always v worked.
I Sisley, I chose the lightest one possible!

Also... my skin gets a "muddy" look if I use colors that are too yellow...maybe this is what you are seeing?

Google it.....there is a lot of information and videos on why your undereye Concealer leaves a gray cast. What it amounts to is you are using the wrong color

@moonandthestars .. the best concealer I have ever used is the Kaja Beauty Don't Settle Concealer. It is the only concealer that truly does not settle into fine lines and lasts all day. Unfortunately, they have changed the formula. I haven't tried the new version but I have been stocking up on the original which is currently on sale on the kajabeauty dot com website.

Try NARS Creamy Concealer. A very good color for most is Custard.

@LTT1 Thanks so much for the reply.

A long time ago I used Sisley foundation which then I loved. I'll look into the the concealer and check ingredients. My under eyes are super sensitive so I always have to be careful, although to be honest I don't always know the culprit for the reaction.

I did order the nd concealer from sephora - it has great reviews, but this one I tried - the color I ordered - is very grey on me. I've had a series of grey looking concealers! I thought a neutral would be good for me. Maybe that's my mistake. Wish all concealer brands offered travel sizes to try.

Thanks @Janey2 . After reading your post I did google it - honestly I didn't realize it was such a common issue. I have to study up on this to plan my next move with this situation.

I do look forward to hearing from people here and see their ideas, suggestions, experiences, advice, which is why I post the question here. There's a wealth of helpful infomation on this board.

So recently is the only time this grey under eye has happened. Before if I chose a wrong color it would be pretty straightforward - too light, too dark too orange too yellow. But this is weird. I did google based on @Janey2 's suggestion, and it's definitely something other people are experiencing.

@Mindy D when I last tried the nars creamy concealer a year or so ago it was a fairly ok color for me (not grey!), but my skin had a reaction, unfortunately. So, I hesitate to try it again.

I've given this situation alot of thought today. My discontinued concealer is a stick concealer. It doesn't offer a million shades. Fair, light, light/medium, medium, medium dark, probably dark or tan. Anyway - that's it. Maybe that's what I need to find for now. A concealer that doesn't come with so many shades - one that is meant for a variety of skin tones within a range. Does that sound like a good idea? Also I do like a stick, but it doesn't have to be. Any ideas for what brands might be good to browse?

@moonandthestars I would go with whatever cancels out grey. Usually, you go with the opposite color on a color wheel to cancel another color but grey isn't really a color, so it's hard to say.

Another stand-by favorite of mine is the stick concealer by Cle de peau.

Not a lot of shades but wouldn't be without this one.

@LTT1 Oh, that's a very interesting suggestion. That brand's concealer has a great reputation. That whole brand has a great reputation. Let me look online and see what I find.

I would love to try new products like you ladies talk about but, it must cost a fortune to buy and then not like and buy something else....or do you use what you purchased even tho you don't love it?

@monicakm .... I can't say how the reformulated Kaja Concealer is because I haven't tried it yet. Right now I have about 4 tubes of the original. But if the reformulated one doesn't work out I may try the Natasha Denona. Do you use the Hy-Glam Concealer? Does it settle into fine lines?

This one contains the ingredient I am allergic to (Titanium dioxide). This ingredient gives cosmetics the ability to cover dark spots well, among many other functions.
'When makeup doesn't contain it, the product usually doesn't perform as well.

However, in my case, I believe this ingredient caused my lichen autoimmune rash and loss of brow hair as well as scalp hair.

'I still reach for my makeup products that contain this ingredient but on a rarer basis.

Hi @monicakm .. the Kaja Don't Settle concealer didn't settle into my fine lines at all. I can't use powder under my eyes because it is too drying. If I don't like the new version of the Kaja concealer I'll try the Hy-Glam concealer and remove the excess once it dries. But for now I have enough of the Kaja concealer to last for a while.

I was curious about your issue and took a look at it while I was researching my own dark circle issues. The websites states grey happens when the color being used is too light. Some websites recommend a peach or orange corrector for grey situations. correctors do come in these colors. But rather than use 2 products, if it was me I would just try to select a better color, which is probably darker, warmer, peachier. The bobbi brown webpage for the Bobbi Brown Skin Corrector Stick has a large selection of skin tones and correctors and looked to me like a good place to look for a better match. Match one's skin color to a model's and get that corrector. They are about $33. I wouldn't think one would need a concealer after the nice corrector, which the bobbi brown webpage does say to apply, and they also recommend that we apply lots. I guess that is an idea if they want people to buy lots of products and one wants to wear a lot of make-up.

I was looking at some you tubes about my own eye issues (natural discoloration), and the you tubers have a lot of recommendations about application. They definitely recommend to apply a lot less concealer than I do. Using a really fine brush to apply just where the darkness is and blending away with a brush or sponge.

Something that occurred to me, but I did not read online is whether whatever moisturizer you are using is not getting along with your concealer and resulting in grey. I found my own eye make-up doesn't always get along with eye creams, and I have heard make-up artists recommend to forego eye creams with eye make-up. But that doesn't always work for me because my skin is dry.

Mally and Josie are both on QVC today. They both have specials on their concealers. A230656 Josie Maran Argan Infused Creamy Chubby Concealer, now on sale for $15 is my favorite concealer. It is a stick with only 4 shades. It always sells out early when it is on sale, so if you want it, move fast.
