Do You Do Your Own Pedicures and Manicures?

Except when I was a teacher and did gel nails, I have always done my pedi and manicures. I am having an arthritis issue with the left hand and can no longer lean over my knee on the deck bench to do pedis and my nails are an issue also; only polish now.

It's another inconvenience for me.

What do you do, please?

Yes I've been doing my own mani and pedi ever since the lockdowns. Every once in a while I get the urge for gel nails but fight the urge because I know my nails are so much healthier now and I prefer a more natural nail.

I always have. I have Type 1 diabetes so have to be careful with nail salons (doctors orders). I have a tremor from a stroke so I need pale polish. No bright reds etc because they are more difficult to apply. I have medium length nails and they grow like weeds, so every 7 days I give myself a manicure.

Years ago...I totalled up what my mother spent on "beauty"...and the estimate was a quarter of a million dollars over a lifetime.

I did manicures for awhile and then decided it wasn't me to have painted long nails. I have always played piano, cooked and worked and polish doesn't last under those conditions. Not worth it. So it's short natural nails for me.

I hate having my feet messed with and also too much trouble for polish--so they also are neat, well maintained by me and polish free.

I have 4 trigger fingers on the left hand. No one in my family had arthritis but my dr. From age 28 said to expect it since my "joints were a little bigger".

Dr's have been amazed that although I have feeling, I have no pain!.

I will see a neurologist on the 30 and have just had an MRI.

I do my own.

Even at my ancient age and issues - I’m flexible enough to cut my own toenails. I don’t wear polish on toes or ant open footwear.

Fingernail - I do every Thursday night.

I have two professional pedicures a year April and June...maintain in between and then all polish goes off by Oct. I only go twice because I am a worry wart and have a fear getting a nail fungus. But darn if my size 9.5 feet don't look beautiful after a professional pedicure.

I do not wear nail polish on my fingernails anymore. I just keep them short, filed and buffed.

Sorry your arthritis is being bothersome. It's a pita when our bodies don't let us do stuff anymore.

I've always done my own manicures and pedicures. It's something I love doing and I've been blessed with strong well shaped nails so it has always worked well for me. My nails have always had color and it makes me happy.

Fortunately, the awful arthritis in my hands has not kept me from doing my nails. However....... For the past 18 months I've had to keep my toenails unpolished due to an ongoing fungus issue on one of my big toes.

I've been to two foot doctors and treated it with a prescription med for over a year. That med hasn't helped at all, and my insurance won't pay for any of the other drugs that are prescribed for this particular fungus. The other meds are $600 and up. So I no longer have polished toenails and I hate it.

I hope that you're able to find some kind of solution to your problem. Personally, I'm getting resigned to bare toenails. Ugh.

@monicakm My mom didn't mind telling everyone what she spent.....and I worked in accounting for many years, so I figured it on statistics.

Never. My manicures chip within days and my pedicures are a mess (lessons from the lockdowns). I don't love sitting in the chair but I love professional results. I do a natural length dip (no tips) and regular pedicure. Both are a huge confidence boost.

I am licensed to do hair, skin and nails. I do my own nails.

The reason? I know that many shops do not take hygiene seriously. They cut corners and do many things that they shouldn't.

I have personally seen and know at least two ladies who got terrible infections from getting their nails done. One lady lost a finger.

I get skived out seeing all the violations that go on.

I am fortunate that I can still do my own toe nails before and after knee replacement. It was often a production, but I got it done.

I treat myself to a pedicure every 6-8 weeks. I do my own fingernails because I like to change the color a lot. Once in a while I will treat myself to both.

I started getting pedicures when the new nail salon opened, probably about 20 years ago now. At first it was just a luxury and a place to relax and enjoy. Now I can't reach down as easily as I once could. I would be be spilling the polish and having trouble seeing unless I put my glasses on. Then I would have to switch to my reading glasses to see what I was doing!

I was told the same thing. I was told if I get any type of infection, anywhere, to call ASAP to get it treated.

Very few salons sterilize correctly between clients. It's not like they don't know, they are just too busy and don't have the time.

I had a cousin who got Mersa after his second knee replacement. They had to remove both implants and he went without any knee joints for months until they got him cleared up. He lost so much weight and he looked awful. I would not want to go through that.

@ECBG I'm sorry about your arthritis pains. In terms of doing your nails, have you considered press on nails or press on sticker nail polish that you file down onto your nail? Those are easy to apply compared to doing multiple coats of standard nail polish.

Have always done my own manicures and pedicures. I'm diabetic. Plus I know what goes on in salons and wouldn't take any chances with my health!

At 75, I have no problems bending over to do my toes. And I do wear open toe Birkenstock sandals.

If you are diabetic and on Medicare, you can go to the Podiatrist to have your toenails clipped and Medicare pays for it.

Same as Sooner for manicures, but I have always done my own pedicures. I have to say that my feet look as good if not better than anyone I know who has pedicures professionally done. If my health gets to where I can't do them for some reason, then I will have professional pedicures done during sandal season.
