I always wondered how people know when other people have hair extensions. For the life of me I could never tell but then again I couldn’t tell when someone was wearing a wig especially when I was younger. How can you tell?

Some extensions, especially synthetic hair, have a different texture and shine from someone's natural hair and it makes the extensions separate from the real hair. I can tell when someone is wearing synthetic extensions but real hair extensions not so much.

Wigs are something totally different and with today's technology of making them look real, it's sometimes difficult to say if someone is wearing one.

One big tip off is when the hair is 3" longer on Wednesday than it was on Monday.

I can understand wearing a wig if you have really bad hair or are bald for some reason. Because a bad head of hair or no hair can certainly affect how you feel about yourself.

But extensions are another thing. Why? Just so your hair is longer?

My neice wore extensions on her wedding day. I took one look at her and thought, "that is not you." It was very long and red. She looked like Ariel from The Little Mermaid. She had beautiful brown hair growing up. She still wears them, and continues to color her hair as well. The next time I saw her she was blonde. What will it be the next time I see her?

I think people look much better when they make the most of what they have instead of trying to completely change their look. Just my opinion of course. People can do whatever they want.

I had a doctor's appt. this morning. Two of the women there had nose rings. Don't get me started on that one!

There are some very bad extensions out there, I have done them several times on my hair and they always match texture and color

I get it if their was a difference in sudden hair length but I’m always amazed how some of you pick up on it.

@Puppy Lips you sound like my Daddy. He used to complain that I colored my hair red when I had beautiful brown hair. At some point I told him I didn't anymore, it's all grey now. I also told a lady once who was lamenting her daughter's blue hair that if that was the worst thing she ever did she should count her blessings.

I grew up wanting long hair. My mother always cut it off in an ugly pixie, not that pixies are ugly, just mine was ugly especially with that cowlick right in front so my bangs fell in a crescent shape.

All that to say, IF I thought I could wear extensions to get the hair I wanted, I would probably do it. However, I have learned over the years how much they can damage your hair AND that my build just wouldn't look right with long hair like that. I'm too stocky and have a short neck. I do sometimes look at wigs thinking it might make things easier, but I'd never have the confidence to wear one out in public.

I don't like nose rings or tattoos either among other fashion trends, but I guess I should listen to my own advice on that one.

Many times I can actually see where they are attached. Especially if they wear their hair up. Other times they look like a clump of hair attached and the owner of the extension is constantly touching and playing with them.
I guess if they're attached right you wouldn't know.

My hair is waist length. I normally wear it up held by a French hair fork.

Occasionally someone will ask me if I have extensions. I don't. When I question why they asked, they usually say

" most older women can't grow their hair that long". Not true.

I do think many women with very long hair are wearing extensions.

I've seen them done at my beauty salon. They wash them, etc and sit there on a table nearby. How often they clean and change I'm not sure.

I believe one can tell by texture and shine of the extension. I can. I guess it's who puts them in meaning a good professional and the quality of thr piece's as well.

There are two people in my salon where that's all they do - extensions. And they turn out very pretty.

@Carmie I did read once though, that it is genetically determined whether or not you can grow long hair, or rather, how long your hair will grow. It will just stop growing at some point. My sister could not grow her hair long no matter what she did. Of course some women can grow long hair. I see it all the time. But I bet many older women don't want to fuss with long hair.

I told one of my son's recently that I was tired of dying my hair and may just let it go grey. He thought that was a great idea. But he said, "Just don't do the grandma thing with the short curly grey hair." I assured him that I would never do that!

@Puppy Lips . Back when I went to school for cosmotology, we were taught that the average age for a hair growth cycle is about three years. The hair goes through four stges of hair growth.

Hair grows about 1/2 inch a month on average...faster in the summer and slower in the winter.

My hair grows way faster than that. When I colored my hair, I had to retouch every three weeks. I had at least an inch of gray showing. I really needed a touch up before then.

I had about 6 inches cut off in December and it has all grown back and then some.

I don't know how long my hair would grow if I never got it cut. I suspect not as long as some women that I have seen with knee length hair.

I hair grows super fast, but I wish it was super thick instead. It is straight and silky with no body.

It can be quite a process. It's best if you allow your stylist to purchase the hair. That way they can get a perfect match. It can be sewn in or glued in depending on what you want, you can decide how much hair you want. Sometimes when you see gaps/spaces it because they didn't use enough hair. I have many friends that wear extensions for a variety of reasons. I have done it with just a pony tail. ( my friends calls it my phoney pony) haha! It can be fun to transform your look!

I recently bought a real hair topper (to cover my alopecia) and although the color and texture matched my own natural hair perfectly, I just couldn't get it to look right on my head. I took the topper to a local wig shop to see what I was doing wrong and the wig-shop woman said that I needed a different kind of topper where the front hairline could be thinned out to make it blend into my own hairline. She said the topper I brought in wasn't that kind and that the topper hair line had too much hair in it to look natural on me. So I returned it and now I'm left very frustrated...I just want to shave my head.

Yes, I suppose I could. But it's really a bummer just going into a wig shop. Been down that road before and I always leave crying. Been seriously thinking about hair transplant.

I don't know if you can see it in these particular photos, but there was lots of talk about Angelina Jolie's hair extension "fail" on the red carpet after you could see where her real hair ended and the extensions continued on. It was really obvious on video when she walked. The top was moving one way and the bottom another!

Comments included "Angelina Jolie walked the “Eternals” red carpet in Rome with choppy, uneven hair extensions that caused quite the social media commotion."

An extension expert said that there were not enough extensions and they weren't high up enough, the color was wrong, etc. Plus she said they should have made sure there was enough in them so you don't see a demarcation line "which you can see as clear as day with Angelina".

Apparently there are a lot of "tricks of the trade" when working with extensions!

@SilleeMee That is one ghastly procedure. I suppose it would be worth it if it helped you to feel better about yourself. Have you had a consultation?

Why have you not had success at the wig store? Aren't they supposed to be experts at fitting you with the right one?
