Thinning Mascara

I usually use mascara once or twice a week at most, and have noticed it becomes clumpy after it being open for about six months. I then have to throw it out when it's still mostly full.

I have a good thinner for my nail polish and was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a mascara thinner?

Trying to extend the life of items these days to save money!

Mascara should be discarded after six months. It can be a breeding ground for infections that you are then applying to your eyes. Think dark, moist environment. Eyesight is too precious to risk using old mascara.

I had wondered if it mattered how often the wand had been used, but I suppose it's the bacteria sitting for an extended time in the tube?

After one use, consider it contaminated. Six months is the maximum time. It should be discarded every 90 days.

@timeless - times used, in my opinion, doesn't matter. Once opened, it's how long the mascara has been sitting. No mascara should be used after 6 months. I toss mine after 3 months but use it more often than you do. It's not worth getting an eye infection when you can buy a good mascara at drug store prices. That's just my opinion though.

@timeless bacteria gets on the wand and then the wand is stuck back into the tube, thus contaminating the mascara.

While I don't follow the 3 month rule, if my mascara is getting dried out or clumpy, I toss it.

You can find a lot of minis at both Ulta and Sephora.

I didn't know about the minis until today when I searched Roller Lash mascara here. They have a mini I may try, but the $15 for one is killin' me. I'll check out Ulta.

@timeless minis are always going to be more expensive per amount of product than their full-sized counterpart. However, if you pay more for a full-sized mascara and then have to throw it out before you've used even most of it, are you really saving money?

I don't have an answer for you, but recently I tried THRIVE tubing mascara...I don't like it because if is to thin or wet, not sure the proper word.

I have to take the wand out of the container and let it set for a bit before applying otherwise I have mascara all over my eye area. I sure won't purchase again.

You have a good point! I looked around and saw some sellers on ebay are selling a Prize Pack set of four Benefit brand mascaras for around $18, but I'm leery about buying from there.

@timeless The rule of thumb is to toss mascara 3 months after it's opened. For that reson, I only use drugstore mascara (L'Oreal) and also wait until I have CVS coupons or the mascaras on sale.

6 months and then throw out mascara??? thought is was 3 months ------I wouldn't try to thin out mascara----mascara is pretty cheap to buy and readily available--

@timeless - Ebay is 100% safe. If you have an issue and the seller won't refund you, Ebay will refund you and take it up with the seller. I suggest purchasing mini's and throw them away after 3 months.

I bought a couple tubes of Maybelline's Full 'N Soft this week because I tossed the tube that was three months old on the first of August.

I've been a "three-monther" for several years and haven't had an eye infection.

Sticking to drugstore mascara and the three month plan.

@just bee That's my Gal !!! Drugstore mascara is not inferior to the $25+ tubes. Some are probably made in the same facilities.

As I said some brands are on sale two for one or with coupons...I need to purchase several for myself and ALWAYS at least a dozen for my office since I give the client the one I use on them.

Three months is the "industry standard" for keeping mascara whether it thins or thickens.

I buy make- up all the time from Ebay---generally for alot less and then in small sizes to try out the "new" things; just kills me to buy a full sized thing and pay all that money for it and then not like and have to send it back---have never had issues with Ebay. And the rare 1 or 2 issues, I have dealt very successfully with the seller.

I don't understand how mascara can get contaminated. I just open it and put it on clean lashes and close it back up. It's not touching skin at all.

@Steffdoggy10 The brush gets contaminated by whatever is floating around in the air (which may also have stuck to your lashes). Then you put the brush back into a dark, wet environment--prime breeding ground for bacteria!
