OMG - price increase at my salon!

I knew an increase was coming because the salon owner sent out an email to that effect, stating they switched from Paul Mitchell to a premium Goldwell line. I was anticipating my usual touch up and cut going from $105 to about $120, maybe $125. I understand, the price of everything is insane these days.

BUT I almost passed out when the receptionist handed me a sales receipt for $140! A $35 increase, Judas Priest people! Unfortunately I just can't color my hair at home. I have severe RA and don't have hair skills in the first place. Looks like I'm going to be forced to go gray now.

@PilatesLover If it's important to you to not have gray hair then maybe cut back on something else?

Average hair cut and dye here in my area of metro Denver is much higher, can be well over $200.

That's cheap, compared to what my DIL pays to get her hair done.

Our daughter is a master colorist and stylist, and has earned the title and recognition through years of continuing Ed., hard work, and dedication to her salon and her clients. She's earned the right to charge accordingly.

Cheaper yet, learn to do it ypurself, I have never paid to have anyone color my hair but myself!!

If you want to go cheaper, find a local cosmetology school and let the students practice on you.

I stopped coloring my hair shortly after I retired and now love my mid back length hair which is silver. Additionally, when Covid cutoff my access to my salon in 2019, I bought shears, thinning shears, hair cutting guide etc from Amazon and DH gives me very passable cuts at home ( every 2-3 months). Imagine the savings in 4 years ( and I look fine).

@rockygems123 I live in the Denver area and I pay around $100 for cut & highlights. No one in my area charges that.

I just wanted to share what happened when I moved from Colorado to Kentucky. I was going to this hair salon for 7 years and prces would increase little by little. Then they started to charge you for the coloring weight plus your normal color and cut charge. With tip and increase pricing, I was paying $178.00 every 5 weeks.

When I first moved to Kentucky, I was going to Ulta Salon and the costs was $105.00 for color and cut. I was not thrilled with the stylist, so I changed to another salon. Well, on my third try, I found a salon 5 minutes from my home. I really like the stylist. She does an excellent job on my cut and color. Now I pay $78.00 for a cut and color. I almost fell to the ground when she gave me the total. It is hard to believe the difference in costs. I am one happy camper.

I can understand your dilemma. I think it is time to move on. I am now convinced that it is the area you live in as to the pricing. If you try others and don't like them, you can always return. Food for thought. Wishing you well.

If you've been tipping the owner.....stop that and just pay the $140.

It's not just hair salons for people. I paid $185 plus tip to shampoo and trim hair and nails for my two dogs...one 12 lb and one 22 lbs.

Prices are going up everywhere. You are not only paying for the services and supplies, but the expertise of the stylist.

In salons, when the stylist gets too many clients, they get overworked and overwelmed. To cut back, they raise the prices. Some clients will leave, but the stylist will not lose any income.

It is hard work and tough on the back and legs. Many stylist burn out after so many years. Some become allergic to products as well and many chemicals and hair products are cancer causing.

I think it's so funny the way women spend an inordinate amount of time and money coloring their hair like doing so was of vital importance.

I let my hair go natural about 25 years ago. It's now completely silver. How freeing that was and my hair has never looked better. I've gotten compliments from total strangers.

Thank goodness I'm low maintenance. Supercuts for $25 every 6-8 weeks; stopped coloring my own hair (a big savings of $3 since I used Revlon's Colorsilk). And I too have gotten compliments on my haircut from strangers.

It's mindboggling what some pay for a cut and hair color!!!

I spend about 250.00 for a double process color (roots and highlight plus toner) and a haircut. My stylist works out of her home so I don't tip her. I don't mind the cost because my hair looks fantastic and I only get my hair done every three months. I touch up the roots on my own in between visits.

DH has been cutting his own hair with a flowbee since doing this? He said they %#$^&* his hair up. LOL!!!

@Kachina624 And with the colorful clothes you talk about the look must be striking!

Coloring my hair will be one of the last things I do ha. Had a salon do it once and the cost was ridiculous. $8 a box is what I use regularly, not too messy and it gives me 20 minutes to do nothing.

I have only been in a hair salon once. Glad I just wash & let air dry. I have not put color on my hair for 2 1/2 yrs. Waiting for it to go gray but looks like it's going to be a while.

I agree, the salon prices at some places are out of bounds. My daughter is a licensed cosmetologist, hair stylist, and she tries to keep her prices reasonable, yet fighting the rising cost of products. I sometimes had to get my hair cut at a salon, which I was very pleased with, but she also jacked up price for a quick trim and average shampoo...literally took her less than 30 minutes, including a blow out. Then I tip a bit over 20 percent.

I color my own, with products my daughter gets me.

So I haven't returned to this salon, simply because it's a rip off for the amount of time spent...but I did always like my cuts, and stylist. I decided to walk away...would cost close to$70 for a shampoo (quick) and trim done in about 25 minutes. I have background in salons, I've been cutting hair since I was 14, and can do my own...so that's what I do until I feel I need a good overhaul, then I get my daughter 🙂. I've also considered those quick cut places 🤔. I think prices are over the top, and you can find more reasonable places, or buy your own color and ask a friend to help.

PS...I just remembered, and this funny😄. My hair is like a longer bob, and I couldn't get the bottom of the back perfectly straight. Sooooo...bright idea 💡...hubby, can fix and build anything!! Handed hubby my professional scissors and said...make believe this a piece of wood, and cut it straight across ...just about 1/2 inch off the area on the back of my neck. WELLLLL, HOT ******...he did perfect 😆. No extra charge!!
