Made a nail decision

Going for a set of dip nails with tips for a bit of length. What shape should I get? My nails are small and narrow. I'll have them fairly short. Oh and I want to do an accent nail. Any ideas for something pretty but simple? Some nail art, or maybe just a different color for the accent with a crystal or something applied? I googled and found billions of designs.Most are too busy for my taste

I have acrylic nails and have had them for 30 yrs.. yes my real nails have been ruined since the 1st month of getting them. but i keep mine short and square.. they look real nice.. so i would say keep them short and square, with the edges slightly rounded... it makes them look more natural..

I've tried to file them into that shape myself. But it's hard to get them even. And really hard to maintain. Because my natural nails each have their own little quirk. Not like the perfection of acrylics or dips

I had NEVER gotten my nails done professionally until last December (I'm 69) I fell in love with having my nails done with gel polish. I loved not having to ever worry about anything ever chipping! I was hooked! I got them done continuous. What a mistake. Here I am 6 months in and my fingernails are ruined. I realize now I should haven take breaks between my gels. But now I'm on the mend and wearing just regular nail polish or nothing. Suprisingly they are healing rather quickly. Live and learn but I do miss my beautiful gel nails!

yes mine have been ruined for 30 yrs.. every 4 ot 5 months i get my acrylic completely taken off and i get a new set put on.. my real nails are thinner than paper.. i will be getting my nails done forever at this point. where i go the price isnt bad at all.. some places around here charge alot more.. love gel polish.. it stays nice for my whole 2 weeks..

Well yeah your nails get ruined by the continual use of the electric file on your nails. But they will eventually grow out once you stop. Just keep trimming them down until the damage is gone. And use products to help strengthen.

@smoochy Not everyone's nails grow out and improve. Mine received damage in the growth plates and developed a lot of ridges, ruts and roughness that have not improved in over 10+ years since I stopped gel nails. My nail beds are damaged forever regardless of the products I use to "help" them. They are healthier and stronger now but I still have noticeable issues to cover.

Love squoval. Love dipped method but when we moved to another state seems no one does it where we live. Did gel for a while. Just getting my natural nails back. But love the shape of squoval.

Thank goodness my nail never used an electryic file. She'd soak off my gels then use a pretty soft grit emory board. But my nails began to lift and thin out anyway. Thanks for your input.

I have been going to the same nail tech for 30 years. I go every two weeks. She was a girl just out of school when I started and now she's a middle aged woman with a child in college.

Anyway over the years I have had acrylics, silk wraps, another kind of wrap (don't remember what it was), powder & glue (for many years) and now just a plain manicure.

I stopped the powder & glue when they started to become a problem. They were lifting too much and she tried to talk me into getting a gel manicure. Most of her clients get gels and are very happy with it.

I didn't like the fact that to remove them each time you had to soak your fingers in nail polish remover which is basically acetone for ten minutes. I opted for a regular old fashioned manicure. My polish has held up very well. I get it done every two weeks and I use my own polish so if it chips I can touch it up between visits. I also add a coat of a good strong top coat to eep it looking its best between visits.

I like my nails short and squared with rounded edges. I think it's called "squoval." I think having one accent nail for something different would be fun!

@SurferWife My nails are a similar shape. I love the design on yours! I may ask my tech if she can do something similar....it looks like fun!

I've lost count of how many salons I've been to in the 14 years I've lived here. I think I have finally found THE ONE! The previous salon I went to was good, but every now and then I stray. I've been to another salon I recently found out about, twice now and it's everything I'm looking for...quiet, smaller, GREAT service and an added bonus, closer to home!

Why not have this discussion with your nail.technician? She can analyze the overall health and condition of your nais, and is the best person to advise you on nail shape, natural vs artificial, length, and how to care fore your nails between manicures.
