General makeup question

Seems many hosts and vendors are wearing makeup
That seems shiny. Is that a new trend? What products have that look.

I personally don't care for the "luminous" look. Reminds me of my teen years and oily skin! On many of the models, the makeup isn't even well blended, especially with blushes and highlighters. As I'm getting older, I prefer a soft matte finish and softer shades that flatter my complexion. And dark, heavy shades of eye makeup call attention to every wrinkle around your eyes. I'll stick to my personal comfort zone.

I think this is a hard look to get right -- and so many don't get it right. A little bight of luminousity goes a very long way.

@bonnielu There are big differences between shiny, greasy, glowing, etc. I prefer a slight glow, not totally matte or very greasy which can be aging on our skin.

I'm fairly sure the hosts are loading up on highlighting powders and like the look, but it doesn't translate well on camera or on someone with any texture/pores. A matte finish or full coverage can also be "deadly" as we get older.

When JT hosts any makeup show ,I have it on mute, you can count on her getting two inches from the camera to demo the product on her face. I'm all for fierce aging and being secure with the age you are, but sometimes leave it to the models.....

People who look sweaty are overdoing the highlighter. I use highlighter and sometimes it takes a few tries to get the right application. I want a subtle glow, but nothing harsh. Combining highlight with matte makeup usually creates the look I want. Going all matte doesn't work for me as I need a touch of highlight or bronzer.

That 'shiny' look is straight out of the '80's, so dated and aging! Shows every flaw and wrinkle, who needs it.

Give me the matte look anytime, Bobbie Brown stick foundation applied with a sponge, powder blush and a light dusting of translucent warm powder over the face, giving a flawless look.

Exactly what @ManyMeows said. I've fought oily skin since my teenage years. To me, a shiny complexion seems greasy and needs to be washed. A clean, healthy complexion is more matte.

Lots of ladies on TV wear too much sparkly illumination. JMO

@teganslaw @I'm in the same group! I need a little glow. The matte look is not a good one for me. I remind myself just a little...it took me a long time to get it right.

Absolutely! So gaudy, looks tasteless to me, and screams, 'Look at me!'

Class and elegance are always understated.

I agree...I do not like that look, especially on someone over the age of 50. Or the heavy, sparkly eye shadow, fake lashes (why??). Keep it natural and light.

I know it's for tv presentation, but the blond model who sometimes does the vionic shoe presentation and Mally omg is caked with makeup. I caught the Mally show while channel flipping the other night and she had so much stuff on her skin you could almost see the layers...she has some redness to her skin apparently without foundation, but I don't think she needs to cover it like she has on a mask. I don't like or wear foundation but I thought the purpose of it was to offer just a little enhancement, not to totally block out your skin.

Make up trends lately seem to be the more you can pile on the better.

We can thank the Kardashians for that, among others.

Though they have makeup artists to do their faces so that they look all right with all those layers of gunk. The rest of us have to do it ourselves!

I've always had a nice complexion, just like mom and grandma, thankful for those great genes. Never oily and no zits as a teen. In my old age that has translated to very dry skin. Matte makeup finish or anything called long wear, is horrible on me. So drying. I look best with a natural or slightly dewy look. Currently using IT nude glow on the rare occasions when I do wear foundation. For a little extra luminosity I swipe a Glam Stick in rose gold on my forehead, cheek bones, chin. Lightly, and I blend it well.

I got lucky - my skin has always been very oily and even doctors take me for many years younger than what I am.

It's in the genes, my Eastern European heritage.

When I was younger I hated it, isn't it something how things change as we get older!

I Broke out as a teen, hated it but my mom said you will be glad as you age. Those young girls with baby smooth non oily skin will be wrinkled by the time they are 40.

Eleven years of using retin a as well has provided me with very smooth, even skin and I am grateful for that too.

It has to be in the genes - I see those I went to school with, and they are wrinkled beyond their years, we have to take such good care of our skin.

A woman I knew of Hungarian descent had the most beautiful skin I have ever seen - not a wrinkle, so smooth. Porcelain white, and never used makeup or anything on her face.

I do use Creme de la Mer now on my face and neck, only at night, and though it is expensive it is the best skin protectant.

@smoochy Thank you !! Even at 34 I still have oily/combo skin and I've come to realize that it really balances out matte foundation and also helps me look a little younger than I am. I am loving the luminous trends in makeup this summer, because I just let my skin do its thing underneath my makeup and then I get compliments on my makeup being glowy and nice
