Using eye shadow as eyeliner?

As I get older I think pencil eyeliner is starting to look harsh, even lighter shades. I've been experimenting with using eye shadow as liner. It takes a light hand. I won't go without some type of liner. Do any of you beauty experts have tips on using eye shadow this way? Help!

Use a stiff brush like an eyebrow brush. Dab it onto the pan of powder shadow, tap off excess. Apply close to lash line. I also sometimes use a crayon type shadow, Doll 10 or Bobbi Brown, in a taupe or brown shade, along the lash line. Both methods give a softly enhanced look to the eye.

i agree about using a stiff brush. it is much easier to apply as a liner that way. i also like squeezing a drop of visine (or your favorite eye drop) onto the eye shadow or onto the brush to wet it just a bit. it takes the color up better and makes it easier to lay it down and keep it down on that area.

I use a flat brush that is stiffer than shadow brushes. Load the brush with powder eyeshadow. Put the eyeshadow along the base of your lashes. It defines the eye without leaving a harsh line. A makeup artist showed me how. She also used powder eyeshadow on thin areas of customer's brows.

The makeup artist would put water on the brush to pick up the shadow and make a more distinct line. I do not like the crusty spot it leaves on my powder shadows so I never do that one.

@MoJoV I've tried it and applied it as others have suggested, with a stiff brush. Looked great, for a few hours. Did not last the day. My liquid liner, applied very thinly on the bottom, is with me from early early morning until late at night when I take it off. I'll stick with that.

Good luck with trying the shadow. Just didn't work for me.

I use this flat-eye definer brush. I dampen it with water first then swipe it across some of my shadows. I press, press, press it into my lash line (tightline) and it looks great that way. You have to find the right kind of shadows to use them wet.

@MoJoV I've done this for years, because of the reason you stated-it's softer looking. I have an eyebrown powder applicator that I use and often I will soften or smudge with a q-tip.

Maybelline's Expert Wear eyeshadows in Made For Mocha and Navy Night can be used wet with that flat brush.

Not all of the Maybelline Expert Wear shadows work when wet. I tried a few different ones and they just didn't go on smoothly and they were so faint. The Plum and the Taupe didn't work out.

I have used my Bare Minerals shadows wet with a stiff, brush with great results. The press technique works for me as well.

I am FAR from a beauty expert, but I agree. I like to use eyeshadow as liner, when I line. I use a tightliner brush & spray it with setting spray, then dip into my eyeshadow. That keeps it from going everywhere when applying it. There are many on the market. I bought one from Amazon. It is the Bdellium Tools Professional Makeup Brush Studio Series - Flat Eye Definer 714

I use Laura Geller kajal liners. They are thicker and draw a diffused, soft line. They are automatic and last all day.

@MoJoV ...I agree, shadow is much softer. I always use my angled, chiseled brush. I wet lightly, but that's not necessary...then dab along my lash line. I personally like deep plums, but any color shadow would be good to use with a tight angled brush. If I use a pencil, I smudge it with the same brush to soften it.

Eyeshadow can make a nice eyeliner. I use the " full edged liner " brush I got from Bare Minerals years ago. l think Lisa Robertson asked Leslie to design it. I also use a "soft focused liner" brush and a "slanted liner" brush, both from Bare Minerals. A make-up artist from Bare Minerals suggested using the prime time eye primer to use the minerals as liner. I would think it would be good using the primer with eyeshadow too.

I use one almost identical to that. Smashbox eye shadow brush no. 9. I bought it back when Holly was the rep for Smashbox, so that tells you how old it is. Still in perfect shape

I use a flat angled brush if I want a thin line. You can use the shadow dry for a light line or wet the brush if you want a darker line.

I use a dry short bristled end of a Laura Geller two ended brush if I want a smudgey effect.

I also use an angled brush. Wet for me. I've read that baked eye shadows are better for wet applications, but I've never worried about that.

I agree with others, stiff slim brush but I also love Urban Decay eye primer. I put all over my eyelids then use a skin color eyeshadow (for daytime) then add powder liner from my eyeshadow pallets. I like to use plums, greens and browns. Anything black looks too harsh as I get older. I just do a smudged line and it last hours. Oh and a have a magnifying mirror on my wall in my bathroom - it's a must for me.

@SilleeMee does the eyeshadow you use to tightline last all day? I've never tried this method because I just assumed I had to use something waxy or oily to have it last in my tightline.

I use this type of brush too to make eyeliners and define my eyebrows. I damp/wet my eyebrows and/or the eyelid with water using my fingertips. Then, I get the eyeshadow color onto the tip of the brush. When the brush touches your wet skin, the color easily sticks to either the eyebrow area or the eyeliner. I like that I only have an eyeshadow palet and this type of brush helps me to use it as an ayeliner and an eyebrow helper.
