Going Grey...probably Not!😅

I stopped coloring my hair and decided to see if I'd like being grey. I still have some color on the ends that need to be cut once I have the length I want. I figured I could always color it if I don't like it once it's all grey.

But something happened in WaWa the other day, that has maybe changed my mind.

I went in WaWa with my 7 year old granddaughter. We ordered lunch. The lady behind the counter says to her, "you are beautiful!", then to me, "your son or daughter must look just like you, because she looks just like you!"(I felt good!😅 she does look just like me and my youngest son. My oldest son is her father though) Anyway, I went up front to pay and upon returning, I hear the lady say to a co-worker, "where'd that lady go?"..."what lady?"..."The OLD LADY!"😯 Oh no...!!! I think I'm leaning towards coloring my hair again!😂

It's a hard decision. Some women look absolutely fantastic with gray hair, while others..... not as flattering. The one thing that I will say, is that gray hair does make someone look older. People naturally equate gray hair with aging, so it only makes sense that a person would look older with gray hair than with colored hair.

I would love the freedom (and more money from not coloring) of gray hair, but will never do it until my husband's hair goes gray. He looks much younger than he is and has black hair with hardly any gray! Me? I would be salt and pepper if I didn't have mine colored.

A neighbor has dark hair. During Covid, his wife decided to let hers go gray, and when you see them out, she honestly looks like his mother; it has aged her that much.

I am already 6 years older than my husband. If I went gray, with his young looks, I would probably look 15 years older. No can do!

@Starpolisher I am sorry that she described you that way & made you feel badly.

Don't let her comment make you change.

If YOU want to change your hair color, do it, but not because this one person felt okay making that comment.

You are the age that you are. It's okay to be the age that you are. It's okay to look the age that you are.

Someone will always be ready to make a comment that your are old, or skinny, or fat, or this or that.

I just feel bad that she spoiled your day out with your granddaughter.

Going gray for me was the best thing I ever did. I was tired of putting all those chemicals on my hair so I took a chance, wasn't sure if my hair would be a beautiful salt and pepper color like my mom or all white like my dad, but I got lucky and have my moms color, I love it and get so many compliments. Don't let what others say prevent you from going all gray, be bold, take a chance.

I was watching a rerun of "The Carol Burnett Show" and in one of the skits she had to portray an older woman. A gray wig was used and frankly she looked about 30 years older with the gray hair @Starpolisher

Years ago before special effects in film, gray wigs were used to depict aging. It is what it is.

My hair is heading to platinum, it's light gray with some dark here and there in the back. It used to be coal black thanks to my Japanese and American Indian heritage, and there are times I wonder if I should have stopped coloring it but dyed black hair is so harsh and I think it ages folks. I was at a meeting a week or two ago, afterwards several of us walked outside and were chatting, one of the attendees looked at me and said, "You are too young to be retired." If only she knew....

Some women look fabulous with salt & pepper or all gray. I'm not one of them.

I'm about 25% gray but the rest of my natural has gone drab. I tried not coloring for several months then caved. DS remarked "OMG, mom, you look 10 yrs younger"!

@Starpolisher You are a grandmother, so I assume you are older, especially since your hair is gray. So, own it, be who you are, spend your efforts enjoying your family!

Dress well, be well groomed and enjoy the wonderful gifts you have as who you really are. Live life to the fullest you can at every stage, be happy and comfotable with who you are then, and rejoice in the wonderful blessing of getting to be old!!!! To everything there is a season.

I stopped coloring my hair a couple years ago, just got tired of doing it. I know it makes me look older but I'm ok with that. What's harder is that the texture changes. It's baby fine now, more textured, and hard to manage. Sigh. I'm still not going back.

Our society is so discriminating. Some cultures appreciate and respect older people, not ours.

A lady friend that I sing with recently went gray. She already had short hair, so they first lightened it so the growing out wouldn't be so noticeable. After it grew out a bit, she did one final cut which was a bit shorter than she normally wears her hair and it got most of it. The next cut she was totally grey. I still can't get used to it. It's pretty, and she has lots of hair, but it just doesn't look right ot me.

I don't have lots of hair, and mine is fine, so I know it would look terrible on me. I did let it go when we were unable to go places except to stores so I have a good idea. It's a hard no for me. Also, I have no desire to change my makeup and clothing to work with the color change.

@Starpolisher If you are physically able to maintain hair coloring, I would go back to coloring. I can no longer maintain my color, so I went gray during the lockdown. I do not like it, but it is easier at my stage of life.

Hubby & I are in our early 70s. We go to lots of Rock Concerts & are friends with some band members...when we told them our age they were shocked & didn't believe us...thought we were in our mid 50s! We also live in a city with high crime (who doesn't) & lots of it aimed at seniors so NO Way would I ever consider going gray...well maybe when I'm in the late 80s or 90s & stop going to concerts...Don't worry what others think...do what's right for you & what makes you comfortable...that bit of hair dye every 7 weeks takes 20 years off my face...Yes, I'm worth it!

I just have to say being a grandmother doesn't necessarily mean you are older. Since my mom had me at 17 and my first born came when I was 20, my mom was a grandma in her 30's. Also, turning gray doesn't mean you are older. A friend of mine had a bunch of gray hair in high school. By 30 she was entirely gray.

I know there are some people who have beautiful grey hair. I am not one of them. A friend has very natural red hair, well, some red and grey now. Her hair stylist told her that she would have beautiful grey hair if she ever decided to go all grey. I guess natural red heads have nice grey hair. I don't know this as a fact, only what my friend has said.

I am 71, almost 72. I have never colored my hair and I might have 10 gray hairs, if that.

So I tend to think I look younger than I am.

HA! I am only fooling myself.

I went to get my hair cut with a new stylist. When she was finished and I was paying, I noticed the sign with the pricing. I said oh, you have a senior citizen discount. She said I already applied the discount.

I guess I don't look as young as I thought.

A couple of weeks back, I started a thread about going grey and I'd hoped I could stick with "no color." However, I caved this past week and look 100% better.

Interesting that you mentioned going to rock concerts.

Just went to a Graham Nash concert the other night (very small venue) and my husband and I noted that the crowd looked pretty old (I'm 72, he is 68).

Graham, of course, is 80 or 81, so....no wonder the crowd is up there.

However, I found myself wondering how old I looked by comparison. On this occasion, I was glad I had chosen to keep my color....Honestly, I admit to being vain!

I hear you. My hair is brown and I've colored it for years.

My husband had white-blond hair and, although he is going grey, you cannot tell unless you are up close.

As I said in another response, yes, I am vain and afraid to go grey.

I don't have an opinion on others coloring or not coloring their hair, it's theirs. I do see women with hair colored and they really aren't looking younger with the color, pretty much the opposite. But if it makes them happy...

As for the counter worker calling you an old lady, how old was she? To some age groups 30 is ancient!

Some women look beautiful with their grey hair. It is such a personal decision to go grey. I am 65 and I'm still coloring every 6 week or so and see no end in sight. I look old enough! I do it myself so it's easy and inexpensive.
