Foundation Issue

I take care of my skin by cleansing, toner and exfoliating. I have oily skin. I have tried so many primers and I wait and then I put on my foundation it looks cakey. I don't put on a lot and I blend it well with a brush and then a beauty blender. Anyone have this same issue and if so what do you do? Thank you!

@Happy2000twou yes. I gave up on liquids and went for powder foundation. There are many out there that give you a natural, non-powdery finish.

You might try Mederna Facial Cleanser. My derm had me using it for cystic acsid/oil.

I still use it and barely have a cyst to be injected.

I agree with @Texasmouse . Why don't you try a powder foundation?

Since you have tried many primers maybe it is the foundation. I still have oily skin at 72 and I feel your pain. I have been looking for foundation my whole life that I love. Recently I revisited Estee Lauder doublewear. I was afraid of the madeup cakey look but it works great. I find primers, although many would disagree to be a waste of money. I tried EL DW with primer, without, over a moisterizer which I don't need, and on a bare face and over sunscreen (ghost democracy) and it works the same with all of them. I found it you use a damp BB it is shear and a brush will give more coverage. It is shocking to look in the mirror at the end of the day and the foundation still looks good. I don't use powder over it but I suspect you could.

I gave up on liquid foundation awhile ago. No matter what I did it would look cakey and would seep into the lines around my mouth, I started using Pur and Fenty foundation and I like them both. I don't wear all that much makeup anyway so it gives me coverage as to not scare young children and animals.

@Happy2000twou I have never found a primer I could use with foundation. Try your application minus the primer and see how it goes.

I also have oily t-zone so perhaps it is the primer messing up the foundation and not your other skincare. I use only SPF50 daily let it set up for 20mins then apply my foundation using the BK Beauty 101 foundation brush. Works great for me HTH

I don't have oily skin anymore since entering my 50's but are you recommending powder foundation just for the ladies with oily skin or have you found a powder foundation that will work with all skin types?
I'm using a liquid foundation but primers do nothing with liquid foundation longevity.i like the Missha #23 I'm using because it gives a luminous radiant finish but after several hours it needs touching up.

I know many say that the EL DW is good and I've tried a sample of the new DW for dry skin in a tube but it was awful. Didn't blend easily, sat on top of my skin, looked cakey and dry after a few hours.

So I'm always interested in other options and opinions when cruising thru the beauty forum.

I agree with @tsavorite and @chiclet , skip the primer. I never found it did anything of benefit. It is an extra step and extra expense that I found unnecessary.

To the OP, experiment with the foundations you have, but without a primer. You may just like it.

@Midmod the only two brands I've tried are Laura Geller (I prefer the Balance and Brighten to the Double Wear) and the one by Pur. They're not drugstore priced but if you watch for sales, you can get great deals. Laura Geller is always having sales. HTH

I'm sure not an expert but it sounds like maybe for one thing you are using the wrong primer. They have special ones for oily skin. Or maybe you don't even need a primer??? And perhaps you need to change your moisturizer to one that is oil free.

As for foundation, since you are oily, probably a powder foundation would be better. I would try Laura Geller B&B. It might be just the thing for you. She has several different primers also.

@Happy2000twou Every layer of skincare affects the way foundation looks. I'd try foundation alone and then add one thing back underneath...serums, moisturrizer, primers, spfs, etc. Even cleanser can dry out skin or make it too oily.

Sometimes overly cleansed or exfoliated skin "screams" for more oil and causes an issue.

@Happy2000twou I also have oily skin (at 67!), I cleanse and moisturize. Once a week, I use a gentle scrub for exfoliation.

I quit using primers sometime back, because they just didn't make any noticeable difference to me, whether I was using liquid or powder foundation. Now I've also given up on liquid foundation.

Laura Geller's Balance & Brighten works best for me. I also use her blushes. After my makeup is complete except for lip gloss, I spray it lightly with WEN Replenishing Treatment Mist, and it lasts all day. I never touch up anything but lipgloss, though I do sometimes blot around my T-zone with a tissue.

I don't miss primer at all!

smashbox makes a great spray primer......have you tried that?

i have tried so many primers and always go back to smashbox......in a tube or the spray. both work well for me. i have normal to oily skin.
