topic kind of O/T regarding hair protein vs. moisture and nails (weird I know) in Beauty

So I have been confused why when I tried that perfect gel pink stuff it actually made my nails worse- they cracked and broke like nobody's business and they were very brittel. I've heard others say the same thing. Well, today I was listening to the perfect gel lady say that it contains protein. So it got me to thinking- I wonder if nails are like hair in that some people's nails need moisture while some need protein so if your nails actually need moisture, using a product loaded with protein will actually make them brittle and dry, like hair does if it doesn't need protein. And that would make sense because I've been using Rosehip seed oil to my nails and have never been able to grown them as long as I am now and they are stronger too. The rosehip seed oil provides moisture instead of protein.

Any thoughts? Do you think the moisture/protein thing applies to nails as well as hair?
