The bare minimum thread had me thinking...

Some women you see have that 'perfect' looking make finish.

It's not the quantity of cosmetics but the final look to their routine.

Is there a single product that finishes off the make up that I don't know about?

I use a good foundation and prep products, but never had that 'look'.

I think my foundation looks better after a few hours after I apply it. To me it looks more like my skin rather than the makeup. Not sure if that's what you mean but that's my experience.

@Mom2Dogs Some people have the talent to apply their makeup & have that finish.

Good skin, of course, would help, but I have also seen people with not great skin that can apply their makeup & look so nice & have that polished look.

I feel like I know "everything" about applying makeup. I love makeup. I have studied makeup & makeup application for so many years.

I have worked at makeup counters as a makeup artist & I was just okay. I worked with real artists that could do any look from minimal, flawless looks to the most intricate special effect looks.

They liked me. I did my job & I could help people find makeup, but I was never a talented makeup artist.

My daughter & I together are pretty good. I know makeup & she has an artist's eye. We have done freelance makeup together, but she is not interested in it.

So that is my feeling about that look that you want. It is a talent.

Maybe you have that talent & haven't developed it.

You can ask a lot of questions on Makeupalley on the makeup forum.

You can study youtube videos.

You can hire a makeup artist to teach you to do the best that you can & to make sure that you have the proper tools to do what you want.

It will take some time & effort. You will have to spend some money (Trial & error finding the products that work the best for you.).

@Dusty1 That makes a lot of sense...I don't have that talent, lol!! I look put together but I don't have 'it'.

I am 67 and have yet to master eye shadow - so I do not wear it.

The closest I've come to achieving that finished look on clients is what I do after foundation and setting powder.

I use a beauty blender, or any sponge, sprayed with a setting spray and press it into the skin to take away any powdery look and set the makeup. The skin takes on a sheen.

The moisturizer seems to meld with the foundation that I have also pressed into the skin with the heat of my fingers before powder and the sponge.

@Shanus Thanks, I don't have a beauty blender only a brush that I use to smooth out my foundation, instead of my fingers. I might have to pick up a sponge.

@Mom2Dogs I hear you and know what you mean. I have always finished my makeup with a spray of water. I use Evian Brumisateur facial spray. Just a light spritz a good 12 inches from your face.

The mist gives you a dewy look and sets the blush and eyeshadow. I don't use foundation but it would set that too. Been using it for many years.

I carry a small version of the water in my purse and spritz as the day goes on. It comes in a can. You can find it at Walgrens, CVS, Target. It's refreshing and your makeup stays put.

Maybe worth a try? HTH

Good skincare, especially exfoliation is key to a finished look with or without foundation that's medium to full coverage. It also enables us to use less makeup.

I prefer using a serum that exfoliates since manual exfoliation can leave skin irritated and damage the skin barrier especially as skin thins as we age. Each step is key from gentle cleansing to serums to moisturizing to an SPF that sits well under your choice of foundation.

Sometimes achieving "that look" isn't possible. YouTubers and magazine photos sometimes are filtered and lighting is key. Age and the condition of skin are factors, too. The women you're looking at may have had lasers to dininish fine lines and dark spots or peels.

"The Look" is not as important as acceptance of yourself inside and out. That light shines more than any combination of products.

***There are many days that if I'm stressed, tired, haven't hydrated myself, just not in a good place mentally or haven't exercised, there's no way my skin will look as good as it can. There are so very many factors.

@Desertdi Did you know that some store's dressing rooms have special softer lighter so we appear better? The same lighting may be in makeup departments. That's why I've said it's important to see foundation/concealer/powders outside in the sunlight to get a true read.

***Jewelry stores use special lights in the cases, too. The pieces shine like crazy!!!

@Shanus Love this! I've noticed diet also plays a large part in this formula. If I eat in a restaurant, I'm eating salt in food that I normally wouldn't have at home and the next day it will show up on my face (puffy eye bags and discoloration).

I'm such a klutz with make-up and have learned so much on the forum. I certainly can relate with @haddon9. I think it is a talent and a gift to be able to work magic with make-up. Thanks Shanus for your shares and wisdom.
