Cruelty Free

There are several brands of skincare I would like to try at QVC....Perricone and Peter Thomas Roth for example, but neither of them are Cruelty Free. With all of the new technology available, I don't understand why products have to be tested on living beings. Many companies speak of the incredible ingredient used, but they still test them on animals. I just don't get it. I would love to see the great results on my skin, but knowing an animal was made to suffer to lessen my wrinkles just breaks my heart.

Maybe someday the beauty industry will step up and use technology, not living beings to assure the safety of their products.

@grandma petes Check out Leaping Bunny website. The Leaping Bunny label is a strict certification program for products that have not been tested on animals. Not only the manufacturer itself, but all other companies in the supply chain are not allowed to carry out any animal testing, in any of their products. The line between CF and Non-CF is blurred. Here's what the FDA (the people who oversee cosmetic safety and other concerns) has to say about the issue:

"Cruelty Free"/"Not Tested on Animals"

"Consumers sometimes ask about use of claims such as "Cruelty-Free" or "Not Tested on Animals" on cosmetic labeling.

Some cosmetic companies promote their products with claims of this kind in their labeling or advertising. The unrestricted use of these phrases by cosmetic companies is possible because there are no legal definitions for these terms.

Some companies may apply such claims solely to their finished cosmetic products. However, these companies may rely on raw material suppliers or contract laboratories to perform any animal testing necessary to substantiate product or ingredient safety. Other cosmetic companies may rely on combinations of scientific literature, non-animal testing, raw material safety testing, or controlled human-use testing to substantiate their product safety.

Many raw materials, used in cosmetics, were tested on animals years ago when they were first introduced. A cosmetic manufacturer might only use those raw materials and base their "cruelty-free" claims on the fact that the materials or products are not "currently" tested on animals." - posted on the FDA dot gov website

So the next time you venture out to buy a CF-product, you might give it second thoughts. Much of what the industry says about their products is solely for the purpose of selling it to you and has no certified or legal basis to what they say about CF.

Isn't that the same FDA that's failed to determine the source of multi-state outbreaks from Wendy's lettuce since 8/19/22....yeah, that would be them.

They need to stay in their lane.......

What other credible agency provides info, guidelines and a place to file legal claims if you have an issue regarding product usage? There isn't one and so consumers are limited as to what they see and don't see on product labels, CF included.

ETA-

There's an entire industry based on "CF" and yet there is no legal certification or creditation agency to warrant such claims. It's basically a free-for-all.

I don't understand the testing criteria, so I won't go into that.

I am sure that companies would love to do away with animal testing, also.

Because something is tested on an animal does not mean that the animal was tortured. I know we have always seen the worst of the worst of animal testing, but it is not all torture.

Maybe some of them just get softer, wrinkle free skin. Softer hair.

I hope with all of the new knowledge testing has gotten safer & kinder.

I think what needs to be done regarding CF labeling is to establish standardized criteria for labelling as such. That would be similar to how FDA certified organic is done and then that way a 'seal' can be placed on packaging to clearly display it's CF and certified with legal terms where you can go and make legal claims in a court of law. PETA isn't part of that system

I know I go against the grain here. My daughter was basically a test for a cosmetic item. These were not tested on animals prior to my daughter being in the testing group. Unfortunately, she has lifelong scars due to the "cruelty free" testing. Sorry, I really would have preferred a rat be tested first instead of my daughter. I had no idea at the time that she was a guinea pig for an item not already tested.

I understand testing on animals is a concern but when it boils down to it, I prefer testing on animals prior to humans being the test pilots.

Many companies that we label as NOT cruelty free is because of their dealings with China.

They are not tested on animals here, but China is a whole different issue.

For example....from Perricone Website:

Does Perricone MD test products on animals?

Perricone MD does not test on animals nor do we believe in the practice. We are one of many beauty brands that are sold internationally including in China and you may be aware that the Chinese government tests imported wholesale cosmetics by law, but products ordered from Perricone MD and shipped directly from us to our customers throughout the world are not tested on animals.

Some of the products’ ingredients are not considered vegan in case this is a related concern

As in the case of Perricone, my BF worked there for YEARS til a buyout closed the Headquarters in Meridan, CT. They never tested on animals in their labs here...BUT if you sell in China...China does their own testing.

Not saying it is right or wrong...just saying.....

Are there any cosmetic companies that have NO affiliation or dealings w/ China?

@RespectLife Exactly. I use many Philosophy products and I get tired of the "but philosophy is not cruelty free" shaming. Philosophy/Coty, does NOT test on animals here in the US. They DO sell their items in China and in China, animal testing is done. Everything I have seen indicated that the testing is done by a Chinese entity, not Philosophy. I don't like it (animal testing), but the philosophy products that I buy are Made in USA and are not tested on animals here in the US. And I am happy to purchase products made in the USA.

I TOTALLY DISAGREE. There is NO REASON to test on animals EVER. It's CRUEL.

I never support animal cruelty and I dont buy any kind of product from those brand who test thier product on animals.

Please always your product from such a brand. I buy my skin care product from forest essentials, they work natural product cruelty free.

@layla2450 We will agree to disagree. I absolutely loved my pets. So much so, it was like losing a child when they passed. I also lost a baby girl years ago. If testing on an animal would have saved her life, I would back that 100%. However, under no conditions do I feel an animal is more important than a human. There is NO REASON to test on HUMANS causing lifelong scars and/or death that can be avoided by testing on a lab rat. In my opinion, human life is more valuable than an animal.
