I was flipping channels this afternoon and landed on a Lawless Beauty show. Shawn was showing a kit that contained a primer and setting powder. She and the rep were discussing the application. The way this is used is to apply the primer, set the primer with the powder and then apply the foundation. I've never heard of doing this before but according to them it's game changing.🤷‍♀️ Maybe I'll try it tomorrow with my own products and see what happens.

My first thought was that the powder would cause a liquid or cream foundation to dry too fast, before it could be spread completely. And I wondered about it balling up too.

I've seen multiple YouTubers recommend doing it this way. I think the first person I saw years ago was Wayne Goss. I've tried it and I like it a lot. The trick is to use a very light dusting of powder. I use a dry beauty blender or a puff with a loose powder and gently press it on my skin - mostly in my t-zone where I have large pores/oiliness.

I've never had any problem with it balling up or looking cakey. The first time I saw it I also thought it sounded weird, but it looks very nice.

It's something we did a long time ago but kind of came back about 5 years ago. We did it in the 80's and 90's to get a flawless, porcelain doll type of look but more natural. After preparing your skin for foundation you apply loose powder, (not a heavy covering) and then apply your foundation.

It partially works like today's primer to fill in pores, fine lines and makes your foundation wear longer. You will use less foundation to achieve coverage and not need to touch up your foundation as frequently or at all. In the earlier era it could create a softer matte finish but didn't give a masked powdery look like Max Factor's water activated pan cake and others.

In the later half of the 90's foundations like Lancome's Teint Idole and Lauder's Double Wear came on the market, they had improved silicone ingredients that didn't evaporate away leaving patchy areas of makeup, were transfer free, long wearing and provided a more natural matte finish than before.

I was just going to ask about this - if anyone saw it last night or has tried it.

I recently started using a new Roc serum. After applying my moisturizer over it then IT CC cream (which I love) my face feels too moist. It takes pretty long to "dry down." Even before I started using the serum I found the CC cream too moist as much as I love it. I have to wait awhile before I apply finishing powder. So I thought I'd try using a light dusting of powder after my moisturizer before the CC cream. I don't use primer.

OK Ladies, I tried it this morning and I don't like it.

7 AM, I did my usual morning routine - cleanse, green tree extract, RLT mask, finish skincare.

Makeup application was:

Milani No Pore Zone Primer

Skinn Dream Finish Powder (super finely milled and lighter than a feather)

Estee Lauder Double Wear Fondation

Pur Bronzer

Laura Geller B-n-B Blush

I started with 1.5 pumps of foundation and, as I suspected, the foundation was drying before I could get it spread out. I had to pump more onto my brush to finish. This is more foundation than I have been using the last couple of days as I am new to trying the ELDW. Requiring extra = waste, IMO. The finish wasn't as smooth either.

3.5 hrs. later, my foundation was patchy - gone from certain areas and cakey in others.

I used the ELDW Monday and Tuesday and I like it very much when applied in a traditional fashion and set with Milani Make It Last setting spray.

@JeanLouiseFinch Sorry it didn't work for you. I also did it this morning (hadn't done it in awhile) with my EL DW foundation and I didn't notice any difference in how much foundation or that it dried any faster than usual. I did, however, spray a light mist of setting spray over the powder and let it dry before I added my foundation so maybe that helped.

It's always hit or miss for me when I try out different techniques. For example, a ton of people love using a beauty sponge to apply foundation and I hate it. Am never happy with how it looks no matter what the sponge or foundation. I do, however, like to press a damp sponge against my face after my foundation is applied with a brush. Just am never happy applying it directly with the sponge.
