Starting Over

I didn't wear any m/u during the pandemic. The only people who saw me were my neighbors.

I'm seventy eight and have worn m/u since I was sixteen. I really forgot stuff. So a couple months ago I started with eyebrows. They are blonde so it does make a big difference. Have that down pat.

Now I'm starting with liner and mascara. Have been collecting liners. The one I used today is too dark. I will put it aside and try a copper color. I have green eyes and copper makes them pop. Mascara O.K. Still wearing a mask but will try tinted moisturizer next.

Can't believe how much I've forgotten. Have an unopened Tatcha Pearl highligther that I've never opened.

Am watching beauty presentations on the Q. Can anyone reccomend U Tube presentations?

@lavendar - I'm in my late 60's and have learned a lot from the You Tubers that I watch. The presenters I watch are young women - much younger than me - however, I find I learn a lot from them on application and products. They sometimes use products that I wouldn't use but I take what works for me and leave the rest.

I also watch a few presenters that are in their 60's and I'll list those also.

@lavendar Wayne Goss on YT has wonderful beginner makeup videos, but keep in mind, most vidoes will not be appropriate makeup for our age group.

We need topair it down to the minimum with highlighter, shadows, and a very thin line of liner....just enough to define the shape, but not noticeable.

My eyes are green, too. Copper may be a complimentary shade, but really isn't drk enough to define. I use a navy,charcoal or deepbrown and wiggle it between my lashes before black mascar. It makes lashes look filled it at the root and thicker. Shadow is usually a lid primer and then a cream stick shadow in a light nude shade. Whatever blush I use, goesin the crease and slightly above and that's it.

Tinted moisturizer and cream blush, in fact all cream products are more flattering on me and I assume on you, too. A slight sheen is more youthfulthan a matte face or one with a heavy coverage foundation. Lipstick should always have a lip liner to keep lipstick from moving into fine lines around the mouth and lip color looks best if it's just a shade or two brighter, not darker, than your natural lip color.

Check out Goss's videos and when looking, make sure the person is a makeup artist,not just someone whoenjoys applying makeup and is usually sponsored for mentioning products.

Good luck with what you call "starting over", but once you find your comfort level with makeup, you'll surprise youself with how much you remember.

The most difficult task is finding someone who you can relate to. Everyone seems to be 40 and under and very few over 60, much less 70.

@ECBG Nicole Johnson is great if you have grey hair, too. I stopped watching her too often since she mostlty talks about products she sells from her makeup line...expensive and not as great as some others readily available in drugstores and dept. stores

@Shanus You are spot on at least for me--except I have to be careful with things because my skin is still somewhat oily. Less is the ticket! Less is all I need now!

Also, I don't always use liner, and top only, but a very fine line and for green eyes, a deep violet or lavender or dark purple (basically black/brown but with a violet edge) works for me if I want something different.

And I can get by with pressing some very good grade powder foundation on cheeks and forehead for most days over light skin care.

Nikole is very attractive and very magnetic, however I enjoy Wayne Goss' personality more and that he doesn't push product.

I found them during the lockdown when I was bored to the 9th degree.

I make every effort to play to look more natural. My copper e/l is really a bronze and is dark enough to show.

I am very fair and dark blonde. I saw a photo. The mascara was black and look ended. I changed to brown mascara.

I have good skin but it looks better with tinted moisture. Sonetimes I do a quick minela veil. I am so fair I'm always take the fairest color in foundation.

My eyelashes and brown are blonde. Without mascara I look like a bunny rabbit.

My eyeliner is more of a bronze and does show up.

Like you, I try to make my m/u as subtle as possible.

I really enjoy reading your posts.

@lavendar - I heard Bobbie Brown recently say that you should always use black mascara. She said black mascara will make your eyes pop more so than brown. Perhaps you could try another black one?

Essence "Lash Princess" makes a great mascara for 5.00. If you decide to try it, it's the black one with the green writing.

Your above post about using less solidified a thought that has been floating in my head for about 2 weeks. SO, I just spent two hours digging out and throwing away makeup and skin care, cleaning drawers, the cabinet in the bathroom, emergency makeup bags, a small box under the bed and my bathroom vanity drawers.

It wasn't that I really had that much, but things were scattered and stuck here and there. The little box (like a small shoe box) under the bed had some skin care I no longer like but thought I might use, and a few makeup brushes, and the nail-file stash I had lost! LOL!!! So that's all gone!

It was mostly things like scrubs I'd gotten free, toners I didn't like and that ilk! BUT tomorrow is trash day and it's all on the curb! Thanks to you!!!!!

I figure if it's samples...it owes you nothing, so a toss is fine. Any makeup or skincare that's old (old enough you don't remember you had it) should probably go out, too.

Anything that you purchased and didn't like or enjoy, well in that case, the money's been spent, can't get it back, so why jam drawers full of those things?

Going through everything gives you the space to enjoy (and see) the items you love, right?

ITA @San Antonio Gal . That's probably why brown mascara is so difficult to find. On the rack w/ the L'Oreal mascara I wear, even the brown/black or just black is always left. The Blackest Black shade is the first to sell out.

I think even Bobbi Brown would put me in brown mascara. It's become hard to find; I started having problems about three years ago. Dior stopped making one I really liked. I can still find Benefit.

There's another reason I don't like black mascara. I have Sjogren's syndrome which means my eyes are very sensitive. Black seems to be harsher and more irritating. I did stage m/u in college and when I taught high school. We had pros who I learned a lot from.

.My fifty two year old niece has similar coloring. When she saw me in brown mascara she threw out her black. Just for readheads.com has some great items for redheads and blondes.

Re cream m/u etc. I agree but sometimes I make an exception. In the winter I do wear IT cc foundation. It's heavier than I need but I always get compliments when I wear it. I really like cream to powder items but it's hard to find. Laura Geller makes a really nice blush.

I am told I don't look my age. When I was in the hospital last year the nurses were a riot; they kept asking me what I did to look younger. Finally I wrote down, "use a sunblock and retina micro" and sent it to the nurses lounge. I couldn't stop laughing; I had just gotten a transfusion.

@Shanus - I need to clean out too. Could you give us your advice on how long to keep products?

I have some Laura Geller Baked blushes I still use that I bought years ago. I think those are OK. I also have Baked eyeshadows from a while back.

What about eyeliner pencils (that you have to sharpen) or gel pencils.

I assume you will say to get rid of any liquid foundations "of a certain age "!

Any other advice on tossing or keeping? I do read different articles, but I trust YOU!

I also like Nikol Johnson (who is different from the other Nikole). She does a lot of videos for mature skin.
