If you have grey hair, here's what Bobbi Brown says about your makeup...

I just read an article on Yahoo where Bobbi Brown says if you're wearing your hair grey or salt and pepper, you need to stay away from neutral coloring makeup. Here are excerpts from the article:

Don’t stray away from color

In the same effort of looking alive and not washed out, Brown recommends leaning into color on the eyes, lips, and cheeks—even if that means stepping away from your normal neutral tones.

“You need pops of color, there’s no question,” she said.

Define eyes with eyeliner

To give the eyes some contrast against gray locks, Brown uses eyeliner. “It’s really great when you use an eye pencil that works with your color—so for women with blue eyes, there’s nothing more beautiful than a navy,” she added. “Navy is great for women with white hair.”

For people with medium-toned skin and gray or white hair, she suggests using a dark brown liner. For those with dark skin, she said black liner will help the eyes stand out.

Go for glitter

Despite what others might say, you never outgrow a little sparkle—there’s no such thing as being “too old” for a beauty trend.

“My general rule of thumb is to choose two places on your face to add sparkle to, and it will add just the right amount of shimmer to complete any makeup look,” Brown said. That could be in the form of a glimmery eyeshadow, a cream highlighter or a sparkly lip gloss.

@San Antonio Gal Thanks for posting and I agree. When my hair was grey/silver/white, browns, taupes, etc. were tossed...makeup and clothing.

Especially with fair to medium skin, blush and a brighter lipstick are necessary, no longer an option.

Love this, thanks for postinng it! Its nice to know that I'm doing some things right with my makeup. Just have trouble wearing shimmers on my eyes because of allergies but do enjoy adding highlight to upper cheeks, etc.

Because I know that my hair is not a pretty gray nor a good texture and I think BB's recommendations make sense, I will continue to color my hair until I am no longer in control.

Far better for me than risking makeup beyond a brow pencil anywhere near my eyes. I already have too many bad eye days from atmospheric conditions let alone adding a speck of mascara or glitter.

If your skin is in the yellow or warm range, her comments can make sense.

I once saw her do a full makeup. Her comment that even if you have pink undertones you should use a yellow based foundation makeup made no sense, and it looked terrible on the woman who was being worked on.

While there's often interesting ideas coming from "experts", I never found her advice to be particularly insightful ... or helpful.

I appreciate any advice, but you have to decide for yourself what you feel is flattering & comfortable for you.

Some of the people that give the most advice about makeup are just repeating what they have heard other people say or such general statements that they really don't address any individual's needs.

I like Bobbi Brown just fine. I have never loved her makeup or her one size fits all statements. And, the yellow foundation of pink skin was one of hers that made no sense & will live on forever!

I will agree with her statement "There’s no such thing as being “too old” for a beauty trend."

Try everything. Try anything. Then decide what you like. Don't adhere to it just because a "professional" or a "trend" says it's the thing to do!

@millieshops You are a smart lady. I grew my color off during the lockdown, and I do not like my gray at all. I have gotten too old to maintain my color, but I would say keep on coloring as long as you can. I will never look or feel the same with this ugly gray as I did with my beautiful color.

LOL, she says that now when she no longer sells her makeup line. When she did a makeover on my gray haired mom, she put her in all neutrals. She used a ghastly shade of yellow foundation on my mom's cool toned complexion. Then she put matte eye shadow on her gorgeous green eyes. She then applied a brown toned lipstick.🙄😳🙄

I guess she has since changed her recommendations.🙁😳🙄

I went gray some years ago, and haven't changed my makeup much. If I'm doing a full face, I'll tightline with a dark brown, and line under my lower lashes with a darker taupe. My eyes are smallish, and this approach keeps them more "open". For everyday, I'll use a light neutral shadow--Laura Gellers Kajal eyeliner in Khaki is perfect. Mascara, always. Same with blush & lip color, but those colors change a bit with the season--rosier for spring/summer, berry shades for fall winter.

I've posted many times that I'm not afraid of a little shimmer! I'll sometimes use an LG Kajal stick in Petal Pink (warmer months) or Rose Gold (cooler months) alone with that Khaki one--sometimes in the outer corners, sometimes just as an above the lash liner. That bit of shimmer above the lashes makes my eyes pop. Those are more "going out" looks for me.

I'm 67 and my eyes, lashes and brows are very dark brown.

I am nine months growing out. Yes a pain....I still have some darker ends and my hairdresser told me to go in the sun to help lighten. I figured I'd have ugly grey like Mother but have a prettier grey like Dad. Surprised😄 I feel like a platinum blond.. Luckily my hair grows fast and I trim monthly. Shanus has been helpful.

I have been ordering some new brighter make up which has been fun. I do my eyebrows daily and eyeliner minimum. I wear glasses as well so need it and my eyes are my best feature. Medium Nuetral skin and grey/blue eyes were always good in Navy eyeliner which I always look for and stock up as can't always find it.

I didn't know what color I would end up with but I don't blame those who color either. I like highlighted darker hair. I just couldn't get the right shade of brown any more and coloring every three weeks was getting to me.

LOL, it's a ridiculous concept, right? Using yellow toned foundation on a pink-toned complexion is just beyond stupid .... and I can't believe BB actually said something that ridiculous.

She should know better, but all she did was kill any credibility she might have had. After that, I would never believe anything she said!

@San Antonio Gal I don't prefer a heavy dark liner. Many times, women over 50 begin to have a slightly hooded lid and a wider liner takes up lid space where I like to put shadow. That's why I like tightlining which defines the eye without being too obvious. I also use a small brush or little finger to apply a bit of a shimmer shadow in a light shade just over the pupil.

Neutral colors can be grey, greens or lavenders when they aren't bright.I sometimes mix them in the palette with a pale taupey beige to cut back on the pigment so the shadow is pretty, but not obvious.

We're allowed to tweak our looks, right?

Bobbi's theory for yellow in the foundation, especially if you have pink in your skin, is to combat the redness and begin the makeup process on a clean, neutral canvas.

If the foundation has a cool, pinkish tone (which many fair/medium foundatons do), after blush & bronzer, the face can look flushed.

I have a fair cool understone, but always look for neutral foundations, concealers, etc. Yellow does cancel out pink/red.

@On It, If you love your hair with color go ahead and use color. Get some of the powdered color for in between to stretch out the time between touch ups. Your post made me sad. Some people look great with silver or white hair and others look like Marley's ghost. Please do what makes you happy when you look in the mirror.
