Just Because You Wear Sunscreen, You Can Still Get Skin Cancer

I have worn sunscreen for many ,many years and wore it all year round. I was diagnosed with skin cancer on my face yesterday. I am so so devastated, I did everything right and still got it. I will be having it removed and evaluated within the next 2 weeks. I will now not only keep wearing sunscreen but also a big brimmed hat in the summer to keep my face more protected.Keep you face protected Ladies!!

How terrible for you! May you recover quickly! I've been wearing a hat outside lately because my skin is so sensitive. Almost all sunscreens irritate my skin.

As for the big brimmed hat, try to find the version with SPF embedded. There are clothes that are also available with it.

I'm so sorry to hear that and I pray treatment goes well but no one ever said that sunscreen prevent skin cancer 100% of the time for everyone. The right sunscreen at the proper SPF strength, applied properly reduces the risk of some skin cancers but not all. Some skin cancers are not the result of sun exposure just as some people develop Type 2 diabetes despite being normal weight, athletic and eating a healthy diet. You doctor will give you detailed instructions on sun protection.

@cuddlesmama Sorry for your news, I hope things go well for you and the recovery is quick. My DH has had skin cancer a couple of times on his face. He is and has always been cautious when being outside, sunscreen and a hat. So yes, it does still happen.

I have to agree, the skin cancers we get now tned to be from our much younger years with sun exposure. And for quite a lot of us here when we were in our youth, there was no SPF, I think they came out in the early 80's.

I wear a compression stocking on one leg and a few years ago I had a spot removed that was basal cell on that leg. I have worn the stocking on that leg for quite some time due to DVT and now chronic vein insufficiency (so basically it helps me to walk). The sun rays got thru the tight weave of the compression.

I watched for over 30-40 yrs my father battle the different types of skin cancer and he passed 4 1/2 yrs ago of melanoma.
You are right the sun while it is good and has vitamin D you must be careful.

Derms say up to 25 minutes a day of unprotected sun is good for you.

That might be okay at sea level but not at high altitudes where I live.

You are right the sun while it is good and has vitamin D you must be careful.

Only a half hour of sun for a full day's worth of Vitamin D. That's all that's needed.

I wear a sunhat every day! I have a cancer on my face also. Waiting for appointment to get it removed.

I only go without my hat to get the mail. (3 minutes).

You can't be too careful. I'm not sure you can prevent it, just keep getting checked.

surprised that my co-players are not as vigilant

the asian ladies around here have shields for their faces, they are smart

It's true SPF isn't 100% but it's the best I have along with UPF 50 clothing/hats and sun glasses. I have never had a skin cancer but I was so dumb in my youth trying to tan my super pale skin and burned many many times.

The older I get the more "things" show up and I think what is that? I am over due for a check up....I need to make that appt soon and let the derm look everything over.

Also I have rosacea so spf and not trying to get in the sunshine is a must....I simply take Vit d3 instead of sun exposure to get it...not safe for someone like myself that way at all.

You will be fine. I had it removed from my face 2years ago and from my hand this week. I wear sp50. As long as it,s not melanoma it,s very common. The word cance r scares all of us, but this is common, especially among the elderly. My result came back yesterday and it was cancer, but they removed it, not the dangerous kind. They gave me some creams to help the wound.

So prayers are with you, but try not to worry. My dad when he was elderly also got them on his bald head. Wear a hat in the sun, but not to much you can do for your hands. Keep wearing sunscreen anyway.

I had three different brands from QVC with high sp.
