Why is drugstore makeup packaging so ugly?

I think that one of the reasons I often overlook drugstore makeup is that the packing that the makeup is housed in is so darn ugly! It is covered in unnecessary words and the actual components are unappealing, to say the least.

I understand that the containers are not going to be as expensively made as high-end makeup, but can't the companies put their makeup in containers that I want to pick up and feel good about? For example, I went to ULTA last week and closely looked at all of the lower-end makeup areas and was just put off my all of the words on everything and unappealing brand presentations.

NYX has a huge area in my ULTA and I heard that so many of their products were great. I brought a list of the items that I wanted to look at and they were so visually unappealing that I just couldn't buy them. Also, NYX wasn't that much cheaper than higher-end brands when on sale. ColourPop had childish characters on their products and while I love baby Yoda I don't want an eyeshadow pallet with him on it or Winnie the Poo! So infantile.

Physicians Formula all have a strong coconut smell in them. ELF packaging isn't as bad as some of them.

Tell me, what do you think?

PS--I know that we must reduce waste so packing will get even worse in the future when it is all made out of cork and mushrooms.

Who cares what the packaging looks like? You take it home, rip it off and trash it. I don't pay much attention to it and it doesn't affect my buying decision.

I barely notice the packaging. It's not an issue for me. I was in Ulta this past weekend and bought an Essence mascara which had no packaging at all. OK with me.

I get more annoyed at high end makeup that's overly and elaborately and expensively packaged

It lives in a drawer in my bathroom or in a bag in my purse. As long as the packaging is functional and sturdy, I don’t care.

I love a themed palette. Sometimes I buy makeup just because it’s cute. Sometimes, like with that Baby Yoda, palette, I buy it because it’s cute and find out how wearable it is. I ordered that Winnie the Pooh palette and can’t wait to get it.

The person in charge of packaging at the cosmetic co. has bad taste. Simple would be a more pleasing option for the packaging. Maybe someone will wakeup.

For 99% of the makeup I have my closet and I are the only ones who ever see it. I don't care about what the packaging looks like and my closet has no objection either. The only thing I don't like are when components are very hard to open. That does irk me and tends to happen somewhat more with less expensive cosmetic products.

To appeal and draw you in to purchase. I'd rather have quality product at less cost than pay for pretty packaging. It's what's inside that matters.

Revolution has beautiful packaging but the product is hit or miss. Wet and Wild has hideous packaging but those $5 10 pan shadow palettes are among the best I’ve ever used. It’s all about what you as the consumer prioritize I guess.

OMG I tried that too. It's awesome. Even their primer is THE best.

Packaging matters to me, so I buy higher end products but I buy very little makeup. I am not really into makeup, and just buy a few pieces now and then as needed or needed to toss out and update beause it is stale or old.

@Squirrel Lover Packaging is important to me. And, it does effect whether or not I buy a product. When I buy something, not JUST because of the packaging, it may be because the packaging caught my eye or added something special to a product that I wanted to buy anyway.

It may very well discourage me from looking at something or considering something that had been recommended to me if the packaging is hideous.

Or course the bottom line is the product itself, but packaging makes a difference.

No, packaging is not important to me unless it interferes with how I use the product. I don't buy cosmetics for decor. Give me a product that works at a reasonable price and I'll try it. If I like it, I'll keep buying. How it looks on the outside is irrelevant.

Maybe they spend less on packaging, so the product can be sold at a lesser price? If so, and this is one of the factors for a lower price, works for me! I don't really care about the packaging as I'm more interested in what the ingredients are. I look to see first off --- is there fragrance? If so --- then I'm done with it! If the packaging is attractive, then that's just an added bonus, but it does not make or break my decision as to what product I buy.

@Squirrel Lover I'd rather my money go towards what is IN the product rather than what the product is IN. Like someone said, the product goes in my cosmetic bag or drawer. I'm not looking for "pretty" packaging, I'm looking for what's in the packaging to make "me" pretty. IF the two items are at the same price point and same ingredients then I would consider the presentation. But makeup is meant to be used. Unless I'm buying it to lay around on my bathroom counter, I'm buying it to do a job. I don't need the packaging to cover the ingredients, I need the ingredients to cover me.

It helps to keep cost down. Why would anyone care about the packaging? It gets thrown away.
