Hyaluronic Acid Application Question

Was checking out some HA serums and reading how to apply it. Seems I may have been applying it wrong when I tried it before. I mixed it in with my moisturizer, however, most of the applications I read said to dampen face then put on the HA serum. I was using Paual's Choice HA and I thought I read it could be mixed in with moisturizer.

For those that use an HA serum, how do you apply it? Which HA serum do you use?

I cleanse my face, used a Nassif pad and let it dry down, Then I mist with a hydrating toner and apply the HA on damp skin. I'm using Perlier Black Rice HA, got it when it was at a great price a few weeks ago. Now it's outrageous. Watch for another sale in June. I'm not sure of the exact date but Skip mentioned something about it.

@monicakm and @JeanLouiseFinch - ok, so maybe cuz I mixed it with my moisturizer that was the "damp"' that it needed. What about applying other serums like my Vit C and other morning serums - can those go on after the HA?

Hyaluronic acid serums should be applied to freshly cleansed skin while the skin is still damp. Then immediately apply your moisturizers, or any other occlusive products, on top of that to seal in hydration. Just be aware that when your skin is hydrated it becomes more absorbent to other ingredients which you apply. In other words if you apply retinol or other actives then those actives can be more potent b/c they will be absorbed more thoroughly which can lead to some irritation or sensitivity in some cases.

@monicakm - please explain what an essence is? Not sure I really understand what it means when someone talks about them. What essence do you use? I have some Mario Badescu facial sprays - are those essences?

Yes, you can. Watery/liquidy ones first, oily ones afterwards. Most of the time we hear Vit. C goes on first, but the one I'm currently using is THDA in Squalane so I do my other serums first and finish with the C. I hope it's right. Sometimes I wonder if the order really matters as long as it just gets on the skin. 🤷‍♀️

Essence is like a watered-down version of a serum. Essence products contain a lot more water than most any serum. Some people prefer applying an essence than a serum b/c an essence is light and can be applied easier over and under other products including some makeup.

Facial mists don't contain the serum-type ingredients which are found in an essence. Mists are mostly applied for an extra layer of hydration.

Essences are usually patted on the skin rather than sprayed. I think you can pat on an essence atop HA acid serum since essence contains water. Think of it as a mist on steroids...LOL!

My derm suggested this. I tried a very popular, top-rated one from Amazon (came in a blue bottle). It took forever for the stuff to absorb into my skin. I don't have that kind of patience to deal with that and gave up. :-(

I used the term "hydrating toner" as an umbrella term. IMO toners and essences are similar, lots of good for your skin ingredients in a watery mixture. You can put some in your hand, rub both hands together and press the product into your face or transfer it to a misting bottle for application and then press into your face. Whatever works for you.

@JudyL I use it at bedtime after I cleanse and use my toner. I immediately feel my face pulp up and feel the hydration, I use Kylie Skin which is reasonably priced. I think it is $28.

I use Active Argan's HA. Morgen said it's the last thing to apply at night. In other words, serums, night creme first. Then the HA. No word about moist skin. She once said that no one else in the world has this, lol. Must be something special about it. I only hope it didn't come from a special rooster.

If you apply HA last then it will pull water away from the products and your skin beneath it. HA draws water from the closest thing next to it so by applying HA first and then moisturizer on top then the HA will pull water from the moisturizer resulting in more hydration nearest to the skin.

I am going to order Hyaluronic acid from either The Inkey List or The Ordinary today from Sephora. I have been used the one from L'Oreal but to be honest, I haven't noticed any difference in my skin and I've been using it twice a day for a few months. I'm almost out of the bottle.

@Lipstickdiva - I just went and ordered both from Sephora. They both had good reviews. Since they weren't expensive, decided to try both and see which one I like best.
