Hi everyone, I am struggling with the fact that my hair has become extremely porous. I have medium thickness, not particularly dry, wavy, color treated hair. Up until a few months ago, using SAM and styling creme and letting my hair dry overnight clipped up into a pile on top of my head gave me soft, bouncy curls that lasted for 2-3 days. I am not sure if it's because of over processing, but no matter what I try, my hair now looks great when it dries, but then within an hour, it is dull, flyaway and seems a bit fried. I have upped my treatments ( in frequency and intensity) but that has not seemed to do much. I have been doing twice weekly oil and deep conditioning treatments for probably 2 months. Also, my stylist says that my hair does not appear to be very dry or very damaged. The other night I slathered on a ton of remoist and several droppers of oil into my hair and, to my shock, by the time my hair dried, it looked like there was no product in it. In the past, if I put that much "stuff" in my hair, I would have to rinse it out the next morning because it would be weighed down and/ or clearly still coated with the conditioner. Just as a note, 613 does not agree with my hair- it turns it into straw and takes me several treatments to restore the softness. Does anyone have any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

On 10/4/2013 Irshgrl31201 said:
Hi Kesstrain. I was a hair colorist/stylist for over 10 yrs before becoming an aesthetician. I would suggest to you to try a protein treatment. I have used many different types of protein treatments on clients and my absolute favorite one is Joico KPak. You can find it at Ulta. Try the smallest bottle they have. Frizzy or fly away hair is caused from being porous. There are tiny little holes along the cuticle of the hair. Protein helps fill in these little holes which will give the hair a smoother appearance. It also helps your hair retain color and moisture better. I used to give this to ladies all the time who were over processed or just naturally had porous hair.

You will shampoo your hair as normal then following the instruction apply the protein treatment and leave on the amount of time it indicates. Rinse thoroughly and then apply your conditioner. A protein treatment is NOT a condition so you will need a good conditioner. Whatever you like is fine. Joico does make a good conditioner called Moisture Balm but use what you like.

Do not use the protein more that once or twice a week. You can overdo it with protein and it can make your hair straw like because it can put too much protein in your hair and it can get too full of protein.

Always make sure you apply a conditioner after you use your protein treatment.

I really like this explanation of porous hair. I've always known that I had thin/fine hair, but it's only recently that I've realized my hair is also porous. And that adds another challenge level to maintaining a good head of hair.

My second cleanse is always with a Seasonal, rotating in 613 every third time (first cleanse is always TT or CA, for their oil balancing benefits). More and more I've been thinking that using 613 more often would probably benefit my hair more. The problem is that I so enjoy all the fun of switching the Seasonals in and out.

I think I'm going to have to try using 613 for my second cleanse for a few weeks (maybe even a month) and see how my hair reacts to it. I'm going to sooo miss using the Seasonals. lol, oh well... the experiment continues...

-- bebe
