Mt own experience is not to use a heat protectant. Most of them contain alcohol is the main ingredient, which dries out your hair significantly. I know that many hairdressers will say to use some sort of a heat protectant, but I have not had luck with it. They also make the hair very stiff and gummy. What I do is I use a dollop of hair styling cream by Kevin Murphy, from Australia. It gives a nice little lift, but your hair is still soft. Next, do not use your heating tools on a high setting. That is the devil for any kind of hair ! I would set it to a medium setting at best. Wrap it around the hair till you get the curl in place, count to five, and release. Sometimes I use a bobby pin to hold the curl in place and let it cool for 15 minutes.

Here's my new dumb question -

I rarely use a hot styling tool, but once in a greart while I decide I feel like taking the extreme time. My question is this --- I was starting to use my curling iron the other day and was going to use a product and thought --- I'm not even sure I know how to use the product before using the iron. When you spray on the product, it makes your hair kind of wet and then when you use the iron, it kind of makes a sizzle or frying noise! That can't be good, right? It made me uncomfortable! I did a couple passes on the rest of my hair without the product, and then I thought, well, am I damaging my hair more by using it or not using it! Can someone tell me how this is supposed to work? I know --- Hairstyling 101!!! Thank you!!!

I just got a shorter hair cut and I need a bit of help so I use a root booster spray. I let my hair towel dry and the comb it out. It is still damp when I spray it with the root booster. I kind of work it through with my hands and blow it dry.

I use a brush to direct it but still need a few tweaks with my curling iron. My root booster seems to help lock in the bit of curl I get. I would never use a curling iron on my hair unless it was dry. I think any product I use should be used on my hair after drying.

But maybe a heat protecting product is different? 🤷‍♀️ My hair is very fine and I have been able to keep it is good shape with my method.

I wouldn’t use anything. Especially since you only use hot tools on occasion. I use them once or twice a week and don’t use any products and my hair is fine.

I use a detangling spray that has a heat protectant in it before I blow dry. If I'm using a curling wand or flat iron (not usually on the same day as a blow out), I use a spray that's meant to be used on dry hair. I've found that ones in an aerosol can tend to not make your hair wet. I don't like to use anything in a pump bottle because they always makes my hair wet. I just use a light mist and don't put it on my roots.

Sometimes the sizzle could be from moisture in the hair shaft. you could see a bit of steam. Or product, but think about it because i feel the product is baking into the hair when you clamp down and hold! even heat protectants - i use blow drying but never with flat or curling iron.

about 10 yrs ago i had my long hair curled at a salon with a big barrel like 3" curling iron and each section she did my hair was sizzling and steaming. i asked the stylist, she don't worry it's fine. She held the iron to my hair for way longer than i would have.

Well my hair, especially 3" from the ends up was FRIED. only noticed it after poo/cndtnr it was so flat and dry and dull !! like a birds nest! . it looked baked. nothing fixed it. i had to get a few inches cut off. not at the same salon, though.

It says on the back - Shake well before using, Prepares hair for heat styling. Apply liberally section by section.
