HAVE YOU PURCHASED AN "OH NO" MAKEUP ITEM?

It happens...looks good or sounds good or smells good and then, it's barely used.

Mine? My expensive and huge Stone Cold Fox palette. I love the shades of shadows, but this palette is quite large and doesn't fit in my makeup drawer, so is tucked away in the second drawer where I forget to take it out.

I also purchased Thayer's Balancing Gentle Cleanser and I don't like it as well as my others. Takes up room on the shelf, but not used.

Seeing Mally's shows yesterday, it reminded me how many times I've purchased sets of shadow sticks and they don't have the glide of my Bobbi Brown or Laura Mercier sticks.

Guess it's soon time for another declutter.

What items do you regret purchasing?

Since I don't use eye shadows, your issue with the extra large palette got my " logistics " attention.

Is it possible to cut the palette into a set of smaller shapes, horizontal or vertical and then tape the desired ones to something that will fit your first drawer ?

Perhaps, an option would be to cut out the shades you prefer and tape to a suitable sized board ?

Would be a shame to lose it all !

@jlkz Some shadow lines come with pans that are magnetic or can easily be removed and placed in a magnetic palette. Sydney Grace shadows are like that and so are Trish McEvoy. I don't think there's a way to cut down a palette to a better size. I do, however, if I choose a few weeks to wear the COLD STONE FOX palette, try to move all my others to another drawer and use that one before it gets buried again in the second drawer. It's just a inconvient size.

Can you create a see-through shelf of plastic which would lay atop two long wood strips: this would enable you to always " see " that large palette and slide it out easily for use ?

@jlkz Oh, there are plenty of pre-made lucite makeup shelving units...have many in my office, but I'm just saying to be able to tuck away this palette in a drawer, out of site, it's way too big...flat but large. I should have returned it, but way too late.

I bought a Nu Face device and it came with like 6 bottles of the serum to use with it. I didn't even use one whole bottle. Such a waste. I should have sent it back but thought I would use it.

I think I am getting better at recognizing, sometimes even just the night routine of removing my make up and brushing my teeth is too much.

And I totally hear you on those products that don't fit in the vanity or make up bag so they are never used.

Declutter feels good. There is something about saying, heck with it. I am freeing myself of this stuff I don't really like and I never use. I've been doing that a lot lately.

My Oh No! list would be very long and include items like primers, BB creams, foundations, lip sticks/glosses and eye liner sticks. I got better when Sephora and ULTA came around and you could get samples to take home, etc. But I still find I make mistakes w/ finding the "right" color on BB creams/foundations.

One gal at ULTA sald I was a light neutral and I have NO IDEA what that even means. When you ladies talk about undertones, I feel like a total dweeb because I have zero clue how to look at my face and tell you what my coloring is. So I buy a color and it's too dark, too orange/too red/too yellow. And the worst is when you pick one that is right color but it makes you look 20 years older than you are because of how it settles into every crack and pore. Ugh.

The primer issue has been really annoying because I had found an item I really liked by Too Faced and then they disco'd the product. I know I do not like primer w/ silicone or clear primers, so I've narrowed the list a bit and now know what to look for on what NOT to buy. I bet I threw away 5 or 6 primers in the last year.

So yes, I've make many oh no purchases. These days I do try to keep the mistakes to lower priced items and read these boards to see what you all are buying and how you like them.

I gently wedge the knife along the edge of the pan and lift up. HTH

@justashopper Sorry about your NuFace. Many of these items require the time, daily, to see any results.

Well, there's a lot more to brushing teeth and removing makeup. You know how I feel about 5-10 minute simple, few products routine...AM and PM.

@kate2357 I agree that color foundations of any kind have been confusing to find a match for many years.

Each brand has their own idea of light, medium, dark and/or cool, warm or neutral. I'm so hoping the companies would get together and find a standard numbering system, so that you'd be the same shade in any line you'd choose to try.

@Swedishmiss I tried that first and broke 3 pans. I do have a magnetic Z palette that I'd love to put some of those and other palettes in and be more organizied by color/shades.

I guess I'm an idiot because I mostly don't return items I buy and open up/try, when I'm the one who made the mistake of buying. Sample sizes or free samples really do lower the mistake rate or cost of my mistake purchases.

I did take back an entire line a MU person at Ulta sold to me and said how great it was on my skin. I didn't have my glasses on (dumb on my part) and w/o my glasses it looked fine. I got home and went O M G. Took it all right back, same day. Didn't even open up the boxes, so I hope they put it all back on the shelf.

I've had lots of "oh no!" makeup buys. Have a box with eyeshadow palettes and a couple of bronzers ready to go to Project Beauty. Have other products that didn't work out for me that can't be donated. Should declutter those soon.

@San Antonio Gal - It seems to be a good charity that helps women get back on their feet again. Plus they work with other charities that help women too. I'd rather give to Project Beauty Share if I can, then toss perfectly good e/s palettes, blushes, powders, that didn't work for me. They are limited what they will accept because of Covid but I still find plenty to send them. My "Oh No" e/s purchases or blushes, bronzers, etc.
