FOUNDATIONS WITH SKINCARE

I'm hesitant to count on the skincare benefits in foundations. They rarely give percentages of the active ingredients they claim is included.

I'm seeing more foundations including serums, primers, spf, etc. I still prefer my own skincare before applying these foundations.

What are your thoughts?

I only try foundation for the color and coverage. I like to use separate skincare. The only thing I might take into consideration is an added spf. If it is higher than 30 I would skip adding that layer.

I agree. I want to select them separately especially since I have sensitive skin. I have to be very careful about applying anything. To mix two purposes in one bottle would raise the odds of a reaction to the product.

I see that as a marketing tactic used to sell more products. It's only natural to want something touted to be 'better' for us than not even though 'better' might not be completely true.

@Janey2 IMHO, the amount of spf needed to protect the skin is more than the amount of foundation you've ever apply. I use about 3/4 tsp.to a full tsp. to cover face, ears, neck and down to bra line. I'd never apply that much foundation or tinted moisturizer.

I've always looked at foundations that have skincare benefits to be an added bonus, not an actual replacement for my skincare. Even if I'm using such a foundation, I still do my normal skincare routine. However, depending on how moisturizing or dewy the foundation is, I may adjust my skincare products.

I feel the same way about cleansers having acids in them. Unless you are leaving that cleanser on your skin for several minutes, those active ingredients are getting washed right down the drain and are a waste of money.

I don't purposely seek out foundation with skincare. If it has any, that's fine, but I won't rely on it. I choose my actual lifestyle, specific skincare and supplements for that.

One thing I believe that's very misleading, for those who use a daily SPF, is foundations with SPF. For the amount of SPF that's recommended, no one would ever apply that much foundation, let alone reapply a couple of hours later. I'm not a daily SPF wearer. When I do wear it, it's in a powdered form, in a tube with a brush, so I can reapply as needed.

My thought is that you would have to wear that particular foundation everyday to see anty benefit if any. I like to switch up my foundations. So I am not sure I would see the benefit. Just my thought not sure if there is any credence to that. Lol!

@Shanus Add me to the list of those who buy foundation with only coverage and color as a consideration to the quality and value of the product. In my experience dermatologist and estheticians would support the opinions here that foundation is color and skincare is skincare, especially SPF.

When I saw this thread, my initial thought was oh brutha! Here we go again with the resident 'experts'...

We all are capable of making buying decisions - I appreciate new formulations, newly found or repurposed ingredients, many brands and product options.

No need to dismiss an offer as a 'marketing ploy' or something sinister as to suggest that a beauty vendor or brand is suggesting skipping skin care or spf.

Regarding Nars or IT or Skinn - have these brands suggested or mislead anyone to just use their skincare/foundation products without the usual skincare? Not that I've read or seen... Much ado about NOTHING!

Oh, and BTW the pricing for IT CC and the Skinn foundation are priced very reasonably/competitively so I don't think either brand is trying to scam their customers by charge more than usual for enhancing the foundation with skin care.

IT Cosmetics certainly does market their CC cream as a replacement for some skincare steps. During the presentations they always talk about how this one product replaces the need for certain other products. That's one of its big claims to fame and why it's supposed to be easier and less time consuming. In fact, this is from the product page for the IT CC cream:

I suppose some need very very specific directions..the IT promo clearly states that it's a "one step option". That means you can use it with or without other skincare. It's not telling you to just use it and nothing else.

Seat belts save lives. It's an option if someone decides to buckle up and drive recklessly expecting the seat belt to function properly under all instances

We have brains to help us make sound decisions, to identify options, research what's best for us individually and to properly apply/utilize the resources we choose.

If you choose to not do your own evaluations and you literally take marketing promotions without full consideration or to follow some unsubstantiated online recommendations from unknown sources, that's on you. There are questionable 'resources' on this forum that seem very keen on influencing others in order to stoke their egos for all kinds of reasons that are not beneficial to others.

@Shanus Probably my thought is try putting on skincare before your foundation or mix it. It would be hard to get the two things together that are really what you need.

@San Antonio Gal I've tried one from Brush on Block and another from Derma E. They are both made from powdered minerals and work similarly.
